That does depend on the context. I'll admit that I haven't watched Gate, but from what I've seen it's mostly modern Japanese military in an Isekai, right? Assuming that their numbers are limited and the numbers of the American forces present there are limited as well, and given that Japanes and American military tech is roughly on par, individual morale and especially leadership become more important. America's military doctrine is mostly based on its overwhelming numbers and weapons (its navy is larger than the next 10 combined, it has both the first and second airforces in the world [respectively US airforce and US navy], only the Chinese have a larger land army and that's mostly peasants with Cold War weapons, et cetera).

False equivalency. Let me first start by saying that the JSDF is actually pretty good relative to the competition. They have more soldiers than the Bundeswehr, and their tech is about on-par with Israel (ie quite good, only bested only by what the US has). In terms of overall power, they SHOULD be on par with the UK military.

What brings them down quite a bit is that no one in the JSDF has real combat experience. None of the grunts have fired their weapons outside of training, and even their Special Forces and senior NCOs have never been in a real battle. Furthermore, the JSDF's entire military strategy is contingent on the US having their back in a serious confrontation.

Meanwhile, the United States military is unquestionably the strongest in the world. We have 7,000 nuclear weapons, millions of regulars and reservists who have all multiple deployments in the Middle East, the best professional NCO corps in the world, an expansive officer corps, a two ocean navy, the world's strongest air force, and two of the world's three best SF groups. The stuff that the US military does in the movies is actually less impressive than some of the feats they have actually accomplished in real life.

IIRC, that guy is talking about a poorly researched sequence where some randoms in the regular JSDF manage to thwart black ops units from the CIA, Russian FSB, and China. The case with the first two is especially ridiculous considering that the CIA SAD and Spetsnaz Alfa/Wimpel are basically the best in the world at what they do.
