The obnoxiously saccharine ending to the tv series was by far the worst thing about it, especially because Homura's character got left in the dumpster so that the blandest and least interesting damsel could steal the spotlight with a literal deus ex machina.

Rebellion is the best addition to the series. It's strictly better than the tv series in its story and pacing, the way it handles the characters (yes, all of them) and especially the ending. Whether it was 'unecessary' (translation: I don't like thing) is irrelevant. It fixed most of the mistakes left by the tv series while being engaging and entertaining.

Funny of you to say that the problem of the tv series ending was heving the blandest girl (Madoka) take the spotlight, when it is pretty much the same with the second most boring girl one doing basically the same thing in Rebellion though this time I guess she did fucking over the world, instead of saving it. Either way the longer this story goes on the more boring it becomes to follow Homura around, and there's no way it won't be the same in the incoming sequel so I guess that is going to be a total snoozefest for me at least.
Homura was pretty cool in ep 10 but by now she has been stretched thin, series need some new characters or to fucking end already.

They're just the show edited down to 4 hours. Some things are re-animated to look better (mainly backgrounds) and some of the voice acting is redone I think. There are a few other changes but they are all very minor. The story is exactly the same, albeit with almost 2 hours cut out of it. So you don't need to watch them unless you want to. The OP is worth watching, though. It shows Madoka growing up and later acting like a dyke with Homura.

Homura's just leeching (mostly) off of Madoka's power, and Madoka literally became a concept, but also the personification of a concept. This means that while's she's a concept, she's also a person at the same time.

Mami is supposed to be like Guan Yu but instead of the beard she has curls. They both were people who have ascended to Godhood, although it may be Buddhist Deva Godhood, in which case they are really just powerful upper beings. Except Guan Yu's a Bodhisattva in Chinese Buddhism, which means Mami would be close to Madoka levels of OP, if she's really going full Guan Yu.
