I never got how reincarnation works. New life means a new body with new DNA...so a different brain, different memories/skills etc. Shouldn't the person be different too? What is a "soul" if it can bounce from one brain to another? I just don't quite get it but it seems off.

Will a lot of traits are defined by environment, there are some obvious traits that are just natural for a person to have, environment regardless.
We can be born with distinct personalities, but learn different things or be miss led in other areas in life, such as how to treat others, what to believe politically, etc.

The notion of a soul is completely isolated from the notion of a brain. Depending on how much psychobabble you wanted to involve, you could say that the soul is an incarnation of an instance or snapshot of a person's brain, which can be transferred and hopefully adapted to another.

If you wanted to involve no psychobabble and remain completely ignorant of prevailing neuroscience theories, the brain is totally irrelevant and merely an engine used to perceive and respond to phenomena.

Of course, you could also just say that "it's fucking magic"

Yeah our "nurture" traits are from our environment...but our "nature" traits are from our brain/body etc. With 100% new DNA you would have none of your "nature" traits and with 100% new upbringing you would have no more "nurture" traits. So you end up with this lonely soul that has nothing left of the original person bouncing around in brain to brain.

Something about it just seems wrong to me and I can't get into it. I actually usually like spiritual/supernatural themes (like life after death kind of stories) but not when it comes to the soul going to a new brain and a new life.

There's a lot of things we don't know about the human brain - it may very well be possible that male and female brains aren't really different at all inb4 muh anecdotal evidence fags coming out of the woodworks, so maybe transplanting/copying the brain into another body would just work. But of course this completely disregards any notion of soul/self etc.
