Knights of Sidonia turned out to be a bit grittier than I thought. Personally I enjoy when a series throws me for a pleasant loop. Air Gear did that, but the problem was it wasn't a pleasant one.

I don't get this series, is it just gore and death for the sake of it? I've heard this series to be really grim-dark but that gives me some skepticism when I watch it in the summer.

Not really, it's rather dark because it makes sense within the setting, not too gratuitous or edgy. And actually, the tone of the narrative is actually constantly hopeful, the MCs are never stuck in a situation where they're completely fucked.

when we see her for the first time, we assume that she means riko, but it is more likely to be reg who she recognizes, as riko was a baby,
and on top of looking completely different after 10+ years, was in the box for most of the time, causing ozen to not know what she looks like. This means that ozen likely knew reg from one of her dives, showing that he was with the lyza party for a while, which is confirmed in one of reg's flashbacks

If Riko had died in the bloody training, it would be the better fate for her, since she's constantly gravitating towards the bottom and there's no telling what horrors could be waiting there. There ain't no way she's going to be able to deal with anything below if she failed that.
