>timeskip

why are these allowed? why are they so prevalent in manga and anime?

why can't we see these characters progress naturally?

>Naruto

there are you happy mods?
>>
Nips have very poor literature culture and timeskips are really convenient for shit writers.

>Nips have very poor literature culture
What do you mean? how is their lit culture worse than say the american one?
>>
>>157197250
Name an American show with a timeskip
>>
>>157197250
shut up
>>
>>Naruto
Why did you choose the anime that is so unpopular on /a/ that it used to be banned for the longest time?
>>
>>157197274
>Name an American show with a timeskip
Fucking nigh everything that has a season break.
>>
>>157197120
You can't judge Japanese literary culture on cartoon ninja series written for 10 year olds
>>
>>157197285
Any series I could have picked would have been met with backlash.

Would you have preferred I used Dragon Ball?
>>
>>157197274
House. Battlestar Galactica. Agents of Shield.
many many more

>>157197072
Now, I don't think timeskips have to be terrible. Like, if the skip serves to eliminate pointless time where nothing happens or to give certain characters natural development time.
The worst kind of timeskip though is the most common one, when it's just used to step up the power levels because the MC has become too godly(or to make the MC godly-er)

What do middle aged japs read/watch in their free time?
>>
>>157197274
I'll start with the popular ones:

>breaking bad
>walking dead
>game of thrones
>lost

You can also throw in every single comedy show due to offseason breaks
>>
>>157197498
Got didnt have a timeskip. The author specifically said he didnt do it because it would've resulted in poor writing.

Got isn't a book series, a song of ice and fire is. Anon requested a show with a timeskip, and I gave him one. Between every season they've skipped significant time, as well as cutting "marching time" in that armies and navies arrive almost instantly.

This series exists, and it actually got better after its timeskip, too.
>>
>>157197581
Timeskip there isn't integrated into the plot. They just go. Cancer time-skips are like in Naruto and One Piece, where time-skip plot related, in their case, they needed to wait two years, just to change outfits eventually and little power-up.

Also like the multi decade time skip from LOTR after Bilbo leaves and before Frodo leaves. It skips time during which nothing relevant to the plot occurs. Some dudes marching for weeks or more isnt relevant to the overall story or plot. Skipping years of training in a series where personal power, skill and martial prowess are key plot elements is.

Time skips are best used to fill in empty time where mostly movement is occurring, as a way to justify why Char X is now at point B instead of A. They are also good ways to start a sequel, or spin-off, like Star Trek TNG, or hell Borito. Also good for 4th wall acknowledgment like Arrested Development, where time passes even when not on the air.

Basically this. Manga and anime are not "pure" literature so to speak (like books) and the writing is almost never top notch. Timeskips gives development where it never happened, basically.

fuck off

I think if applied the right way, a timeskip can work, but if applied the wrong way, it can make an already bad manga even worse. (looking at your Fairy Tail)

Come on. Vagabond is pretty great and it had a timeskip. There's also Vinland saga.
>>
>>157199818
I think Vinland Saga quality dropped as a result.
And didnt the author discontinue Vagabond?
>>
>>157199818
>Vagabond is pretty great
>>
>>157197072
Oda done it really nice
>7yo Luffy start of a 10 years training
>timeskip
>17yo Luffy start of 1 year adventures
>17yo Luffy start of 2 years training
>timeskip
>19yo Luffy back to adventures
>>
Dragon Ball is the only manga in which the timeskip didnt fucked with the story (and still a lot of people hate the Z phase).
>>
>>157199848
Vinland Saga feels like a different series, but the writing is just as good as it used to be. It's honestly a matter of preference.
Vagabond is still ongoing.

>>157199861
(You)
>>
>>157199971
I mean the big thing in a lot of them is they do it to give their characters time to be stronger/mature or to give more time for shit to happen
dragonball actually had many time skips but for some reason people only ever talk about the one where gohan is born, honestly it just jumps a few years after every story arc basically
I think the big issue is in a lot of shounen battle manga that do it, they start to deal with more serious issues and lose a lot of the humor and lighthearted character development that attracted some fans,
with the exception of one piece which has kept up the humor and not really had any tonal shift since it, but it's also a class act and the most successful manga of all time
