There are a few stories older than SAO, just never got a LN edition as fast as the SAO author could put out.

The origin is the WN scene, but to be more precise there was a surge of chinese Wuxia a year before Japan decided they could make Web Novels better than the Chinese.

It's the same for both now, 1000 shit stories with probably 6 that are good. Even right now I follow 20 mediocre ones, they all tend to be like Bleach with 1 or 2 great arcs, and the rest is shit rehash / same as every other isekai out there.

The sad trend is the ones getting adapted are the generic as fuck ones which quickly got LNs to create sales.

The cafe one seems more like an episodic SoL to me and I absolutely adored the cafe episode from Flying Witch. Consider that one picked up.
