Ishida has successfully managed to depict the horror aspect of the clowns.

What i liked about Kaneki and Eto is their dynamic and the destiny they carry, which Ishida set up for them since part 1. How he illustrated them multiple times with the red string of fate. Trowing hints and forshadowing their eventual encouter as Kaneki and Eto.

Ishida put effort into that connection, which is why I enjoy them together. It's not all romance anon.

Think of it this way, Kaneki turned 19 during the Aogiri arc after being kidnapped from Anteiku he joined the final day of October the same year. So that is collectively a month and several days worth of bonding with Touka. He turned 24 the day he became the One-Eyed King. Now between the ages 19-24, how much of this time "built" their relationship?

There is nothing organic about this relationship. The fundamental groundwork was laid out, but the author failed to expound on it in a manner conveying any real substance. The dynamic of Touka and Kaneki had potential pre-Aogiri: and that bond lasted barely 1 month in the series timeline. Had Kaneki taken Touka with him instead of leaving her at Anteiku, Touka's infant feelings for Kaneki could have been nutured and may have made coherent sense *this* long into the game. Instead, the author relegates her to the "obligatory love interest" corner where her feelings will last till infinity up to the next 6 months in the story.

During this 6 months, she and Kaneki have no interaction. Their brief reunion on the bridge was nice, but hardly would quantify as a surrogate for the lack of real build up they have had in terms of potential romance. Cue in the next 2 years and 6 months. Kaneki and Touka *still* have had no interaction. As Haise, Kaneki shows up at :re and is attracted to Touka, but Ishida does all of jackshit with this premise. Instead of them forming even a friendship or breaking the ice (or Touka helping him recover his true self, which could foster convincing feelings on Kaneki's end) - Ishida excludes Touka from the story completely to the point she barely exists. Maybe your problem is that generally, manga doesn't typically represent real relationships. Over that month and a bit Touka spent a lot of time with Kaneki, and was lonely when he left. Add in daddy issues and it makes sense why she was trying to chase him down and find him all the time. Then when he 'died' she let herself believe he would come back since people you care about dying is a pretty shit feeling to deal with.

And as for 'developing' so fast in :re, it really didn't. It's just the same as how Kaneki was immediately infatuated with Rize for no good reason at the beginning of TG other than she was hot. And on Touka's side, she's probably been super low key for the past few years and didn't exactly have the chance to develop new relationships and move on. So seeing Haise/Kaneki, no wonder she's into him. Not to mention that Ghoul's probably have rampant hormones or something.

On Kaneki's side I don't think he feels the same as Touka because he hasn't had time to consider it, he just cares for her and only just started becoming aware of her as a love interest as Kaneki. People don't need months to mull that over. Just put them in a situation (i.e. getting kissed by Touka) and you'll generally figure it out.

The long development over time you see in other manga results in it becoming more believable that the two characters are actually going to stay together for the rest of their lives. Since they already know each other well and have gone through a lot together. In Touka and Kaneki's case, this doesn't really matter, since one or both of them are going to die anyways.

Touka/Kaneki is one of those relationships that are doomed from the very start. They don't naturally compliment eachother. There's no connection on an intimate level. No feeling of mutual understanding and trust that comes as easy as breathing. That's why a popular phrase 'opposites attract' fails to describe them, they're simply too apart from eachother, in too many aspects. They're completely incompatible in terms of emotional maturity and intellect. The worst match two people could possibly make. A complete and utter clusterfuck of a 'relationship'. One look at how Kaneki acts around her tells more than it's needed. He doesn't know what to do, what to say, because she's dumb as a fuck and he literally cannot have ONE meaningful and stimulating conversation he so very obviously craves. Not to mention she's violent and self-absorbed and couldn't be bothered to at least try and be a considerate person. She's desperate and pushes her feelings onto Kaneki, driving him even more into a corner. At the same time, it still is 1/4 of the manga as of now and 3 (4 really) full arcs crucial in their lives and where they continuously bounced off each other. The lack of contact also doesn't preclude relationship growth. Most of Touka stuff in second half of TG is learning more about real Kaneki or dealing with loss and abandonment.
