What about spreads?
>>
What about color pages?
And don't give me any of that Kindle Fire bullshit. That's not an e-reader; it's a gimped tablet.
>>
>>157145757
Never mind. E-readers are just shit (I don't read action manga so I rarely see spreads).
>>

The ECTACO jetBook Color 2 is one of the few color ebook readers.

This, reading manga on kindle is torture since the pages are too small.

The technology is ideal for reading manga, the problem is the commercially available options are so awful

Kindle Amazon DRM/Spyware is a big NO

Kobo quality control is utter garbage.

Sony digital paper is god tier but too expensive.

The E-Ink patent can't expire soon enough.

There has to be at least one decent sized tablet for this shit.

Been meaning to get one so I can have a portable faplet for everywhere

>Sony digital paper is god tier but too expensive.
Damn, I just checked it out and I want one of those
$1700 retail though, why do nice things always have to be so expensive
>>
>>157145704
Yeah but the kindle isn't that great for it. I bought a galaxy tab one of the 10.1 inch ones. That's fucking awesome for reading manga because the screen size matches up really well with the image sizes for manga. So I can just fit the images to the screen size and it works like a charm.
If I'm ever away from home and need to catch up on anime I can use xdcc and watch anime on it or use my plex server.
in short: kindles are fore squares
>>
Depends on the manga. If the font is too small, it becomes a hassle to read on an e-reader because everything gets scrunched down so small. I find myself starting to read on my e-reader, then finishing up on the PC because it gets too annoying. If I had one with a larger screen, it would be great, but there are very few large screen e-readers and of those, how many have decent resolutions and are reasonably priced?
>>
>>157151737
Get a decent tablet with 1080p resolution, far superior to e-readers. My galaxy tab was like £200ish for 10.1 screen but there are cheaper ones as well
>>
>>157151017

>$1700

The DPT-S1 could be bought just before discontinuation at $699, and the upcoming replacement the DPT-RP1 might become even cheaper over time:

http://www.sony.jp/digital-paper/products/DPT-RP1/
>>
>>157145704

I would advise just getting an android tablet (I personally recommend the Nvidia K1). E-Ink is fantastic, but the content is still lacking in ebook formats and other formats are barely usable.
>>
>>157151946

You can just convert anything with Calibre, though.
>>
>>157151946
>but the content is still lacking in ebook formats
Calibre+KCC are your friends

I still rarely use my Kobo for manga because E-ink is just too small most times for spreads and smaller text bubbles and zooming is nowhere near as smooth with the refresh rate on the screens, even though I really love how easy they are on the eyes compared to AMOLED/LCD for long reading sessions.
>>
>>157151877
Eh, I am over it. I had an Asus Transformer back when they dropped under $300 for the first time, and it wasn't bad, but after buying it, I realized how fucking stupid tablets are. It was essentially relegated to displaying fap material and video game FAQs so I wouldn't have to get off my bed. Anything a tablet can do, my phone can do. I essentially wasted $300 on a device I'd never really use; it died right after the warranty period ended too. Good riddance.

At least e-readers are useful for reading books with their unique screens. My Kobo Aura HD is great, but like I said, not all manga will look nice on it. You just have to go on a case by case basis. It's amazing for actual books. Personally, I hacked it and use KOreader, which I find greatly superior to the shitty Kobo interface.

As far as tablets go, I have a Nintendo Switch now. It's simply a matter of waiting for hacks to happen.
>>
>>157151416
Why the fuck would I care about that over the zero eye strain and fatigue that an E-Ink screen gives me?
>>
>>157152527
Do you enjoy not readin the tiny dialogue on your tiny e-ink screen? If you do read it you're by definition straining your eyes.

>tiny e-ink screen

Well, in my experience when my Kobo Aura H2O was working and I encountered a page that had tiny letters (which wasn't really too often) I simply just zoomed in.

In the end that problem gets solved by making the screens a bit bigger, something that it is already being done.
>>
Try as I might to keep them warm, I've lost two kindles to January weather.

E-ink and below-freezing temperatures don't play nice.

Also, they really don't like PDFs.

I too like my color images to be only in dark pastel colors, lel

Honestly a good IPS tablet screen provides more contrast in most situations than any ereader, has no problems with shadow images and can also display colors accurately
>>
>>157152652

Tiny? Are you aware that many e-reader are tankoubon-sized? At 8'' approximately, most works have always been read on printed books as big as that. How can it all suddenly be too tiny?
>>
I would rather invest in a tablet with a decent screen. I have both an iPad and a Kobo, and I read all my manga on an iPad. Kobo page turns are slow as shit, and if the text is just a tiny bit too small, you'll have to zoom in which is a pain in the ass. E-ink is only good for reading text and nothing else.
>>
>>157153411
>Tiny?
This doesn't work for 2 page spreads

Also unfortunately scanlators don't really account for that since the general persisting assumption is that scans are being read on a PC. Zooming is also not great on E-ink readers due to low refresh rate and clunky UI. Take this from someone who uses a Kobo H2O alot and even ocassinally binges manga on it.

Just get a Chuwi Hi8. Paid £60, dual boot android/windows 10, 1920x1200 screen which anime/manga looks amazing on and you can play VN's on Windows 10. E-readers can't compete, although I still love my Kindle 3 for books.
>>
>>157153008
If I was going to read it on a lit screen why wouldn't I use my monitor?

The real problem with eink devices for reading manga is none of them have a large enough drive to store stuff on or ssh or similar support to stream the shit from my fileserver.

Is there an e-reader that can read Aozora format directly?
Aozora to epub works but direct support would be nice.
>>
hdoujin downloader + kindle comic converter ftw
>>
>>157157828
>Aozora
As in Aozora bunko? How would that even work with it being a proprietary format used by their content delivery services and not licensed to any manufacturer afaik?
>>
I wish there was a bigger selection of 8-9" readers. Most of those I see are 6-7" which are a bit too small to display tankobon pages adequately. And of those few that are bigger, they usually aren't as technically refined as the small readers, since the normalfag market prefers the little manlet sizes so we don't get new models for the big ones as often.
>>
>>157157953
Aozora bunko is fighting for free access and against copyright .
>>
>>157158071
>Aozora bunko is fighting for free access and against copyright
Why wouldn't they just publish their content in epub then? Which is a free and open format?

Can you give me more information? I made the assumption that Aozora bunko was some big publishing label like Dengeki, ASCII or others of their ilk.
>>
>>157156764
>Often gives me head-aches.
Me too, but the cause for me is eye strain from the lit screen. I doesn't matter if it's at my desk or wherever.

I have an old Kindle DX that I use for large amounts of text, and I love that thing; it's saved me a lot of headaches, literally. Unfortunately it's shit for manga.
>>
>>157157720
My condolences. I have heard of people getting dodgy ones but it seems I lucked out, been going strong for almost a year now and the only issue I've had is the battery level sometimes not being correct on the android os. Where did you get it from? Someone sent their's back to Banggood and they paid for the postage and sent him back one that worked perfectly.
>>

Ah neat. I assume the converter you referenced is working reliably for you? Sadly I don't think anyone makes a reader commercially that probably supports that format. Perhaps this link will be useful? But it's likely you've already seen it.

>>
>>157159154

>>
>>157159091
>large library
This is not so much an issue as a large files are. You really can't have more than a few series on there. I like to dump entire series on my device and then binge through them, maybe I'll switch from reading Billy Bat to Sangkokushi or vice versa when either of those hits a dull point or I'm not in the mood for it. With a microSD card at least I have the option of carrying a large card or multiple smaller cards which I can hotswap rather than having to get to my laptop or some other machines and copy the files over.

>>157159154
>>157159273
Really any decent scanlator should be stitching two page spreads for you, and tools like KCC can auto rotate 2 page spreads(see: Manga mode) so that they're in the appropriate orientation for page aspect ratio.
>>
where to even get manga for tablets?

>>157159475
thats why its a premium product
>>
>>157159475
You can't hotswap on a GloHD despite having a microSD slot.
>Really any decent scanlator should be stitching two page spreads for you,
What if I don't read scanlations?
>>
>>157159727
>You can't hotswap on a GloHD despite having a microSD slot.
Works on my H2O

>What if I don't read scanlations?
Then yeah, there's no way to show two image files simultaneously. I assume even legit kindle/kobo manga releases have the image stitched and rotated(or never split? since the publisher is likely working with high quality scans or the original digital files in some cases).
>>
>>157160410
Personally I prefer viewing both sides in high resolution than having them stitched.
It might be cool if somebody released a double screen reader.
>>
>>157160548
>Personally I prefer viewing both sides in high resolution than having them stitched
Kinda doesn't work for me, especially if the spread isn't just a compilation of panels but rather one massive panel with a character or some element front and center. My mind can do the mapping, but it's not a pleasant experience and completely detracts from the experience.
>>
>>157155126
They made a 32GB Kindle Paperwhite specifically for this reason (it's made for manga). Unfortunately, it's only sold in Japan.
>>
Are e-readers fine if I just care about consuming light novels in Japanese? Or would a tablet still be preferred? I'm concerned about the eye-strain and hardly need to do anything else but reading ...
>>
>>157162720
They are better than tablets for reading LNS.

Assuming you convert the pdf to kindle format
>>
>>157162720
For normal books (and light novels), you would get less eye strain on an ereader. If you want bigger font, the text size can be changed for everything but comics. It may be difficult to put books onto your device, but the benefits outweigh the downsides in this case. Also, 1 week to 3 weeks of use in one charge and a device that's less likely to crack. You should choose a tablet over an ereader if you watch anime though.
>>
>>157162720
If you want to read novels,e-readers are the obvious choice. No eye-strain like with tablets.

Honestly tablets are pretty useless if you're not reading full color stuff. I use an e-reader for novels and manga, my computer and media center for multimedia stuff like games and video, and my smartphone when I want to check internet on the go. My tablet sees barely any use (I gues you can browse sadpanda in your bed with one, but that's pretty specific).
>>
>>157148502
Seconded.

I use an old Dell Venue 8 for the last year or two and it works out pretty great.

Not only is it great for manga, its great for hentai manga and anime.
>>
I much prefer tablets for manga. The higher resolution screens and bigger size really make it ideal for manga. E-readers are better for novels though.
>>
>>157162720
