I've always though it was the halo of anime. Overhyped by the fanbase and when you try it, it was pretty meh.

Anime like Ideon and Zeta Gundam (or any of the old gundam anime) make TTGL look like shit. But it's honestly not bad.

I dropped it after like 5 episodes a couple of years ago and haven't gotten back to it. It didn't do it for me, the power thing that motivates the robottos is obviously supposed to give you goose bumps or something, but it seems so forced.

I feel like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is supposed to be as if in an alternate timeline, real robot never became more popular than super robot, and super robot only became more over the top and nonsensical. Rather than ripping off older super robot anime, it is the logical conclusion of the genre. It is essentially the last word in Super Robot.

Gurren Lagann isn't more over the top than older mecha. Getter Robo Armaggedon had the Getter slicing an entire moon in half, not to mention Getter Emperor in the manga. and there's always been shit like using yo-yos, fans and tops as weapons. GaoGaiGar had a new weapon or ability or new robot buddy almost every episode. Hell, even Imagawa's Mazinger was over the top as fuck.

It's literally Imaishi taking things he loved from older super robots and putting them together. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's such that no one can criticize it without falling in some kind of trap where they are the stupid ones for not 'getting' it, even though the whole point is that there's nothing to get in the first place.
