My theory about the demons: they are an alien life form that assimilates what they eat. Their cells don't grow or self-replicate, they take the cells of other beings. Assimilating cells is a delicate process which accrues translation errors; as a result the demons develop tumors and hormone imbalances which lead to bloated torsos, oversized muscles and skeletal limbs. It is very difficult for them to assimilate brain cells because the raw material needs to not have experienced any stress in their life, trying to assimilating the wrong brain cells cause insanity and death. At the same time, the demons will slowly revert to a non-thinking life form if they cannot replenish their brain cells. Their chimera biology is a complete mess, demons try to live by scavenging the best they can and praying for success. Most demons are violent and half-mad. The demons with the highest level of authority get to eat quality food with a higher chance of assimilation and as a result they are calm and smart.

The alien/demons are not native to the planet which is why they are always wearing gas masks in case of respiratory failure. They desperately want to adapt. Many of them think it's impossible and want to leave the planet. The leader of the demons is running an experiment to eat only the highest quality material, aiming for a 100% conversion rate which will make him near-human and able to live and breath on the planet. It's very important that this experiment doesn't fail or he will fall from power.

My idea is that that the conversion rate for assimilating human flesh drops drastically after sexual puberty. Perhaps the reason is mumbo-jumbo science about stem cells and youth hormones. Perhaps the demons do not have a sex/gender and sexual puberty in humans adds a whole lot of raw material that they cannot integrate in their biology and which leads to cancer. It's also possible that the change through puberty naturally adds a lot of stress to the body/brain which is something the demons desperately want to avoid eating.
