Brook was a fantastic character in Thriller Bark and has been great in this one too. He had the misfortune of being added to the series right before the big separation arc and being excused from Dressrosa, two massive portions of the series, but he was never a bad character. Just one poorly utilized, which is now being addressed.

More people seemed upset about his lack of spotlight in Fishman Island and Punk Hazard than anything, not that they disliked him.

As you said, there's only so many you can do that fit the initial, natural theme of the logia. Given the context surrounding Katakuri's logia it works sufficiently enough to not be glaringly out of place, its powers function in the same way as what we've seen so far and fits the overall WCI theme.

There always has to be a first example of something different from the norm and I think it's been pulled off exceptionally well in this instance. Though I would like to see some of those ones you described, especially the oil one, that one sounds like a lot of fun.
