You know what doesn't make sense to me? Why Yoshikadu is making the "enslave" faction so one dimensional with Madarai. I'm not saying they have to be hugely nuanced since ultimately Kanaka is the final boss and this is a hurdle in Kazuya's training but this is really simplistic a view on what could be a more complicated topic.

The first problem is their name. Why not call themselves the traditionalists? Being the "enslave" faction basically makes them unsympathetic by name alone; it's like if they called themselves the "Chain those niggers up" group. Nobody can defend that, nobody would.
What little we know about Madarai hints at him just wanting to maintain the status quo while putting himself in power, maybe? The way things worked before with the exorcists, Tsukumogami were tools to be used and commonly kept in sealed states. That policy hasn't been an absolute as we know there were exorcists that had more equal relationships with their tools but they were definitely the exception to the norm.

The next thing is the reaction to Mayoiga. The reaction Madarai had at first was reasonable given the situation. You have a group of Tsukumogami that went rogue, killed a god, and were willing to do it again. Executing a dangerous group of criminals that threatened the regional status quo is justified given that Exorcists are tasked with upholding this balance. I'm not saying I agree with executing them, but for a brief moment Madarai could have been justified, if a bit over-zealous. But all that gets thrown out the window with how mustache twirling evil he is. And he's a hypocrite because he'll keep the ones useful to him alive just like their previous owners.

And lastly his faction is a joke. A bunch of filler and people who had their ranks inflated but no skill to back it up. I know Granny's faction is filled with some literal-who's as well but more of them are at least established characters.

I wish this conflict had more depth but maybe I'm asking too much.

I don't think I am. The previous conflict between Mayoiga and Kukuri & Co was the type of complex confrontation I'm asking for. Both sides have valid reasons for doing what they are doing, and the antagonistic side has a strong variety in it's representation. You had the more violent Tsugumomo that just wanted to Axe Kukuri as soon as possible. You had the negotiation faction who tried diplomacy even though we the reader knew it wouldn't work out in the end. And their faction leader was both agreeable yet never stopped being villainous.

By comparison the enslave faction is just one asshole and the people that flocked around him for power. He's insanely boring and incompetent.
