The undercover guy is revealed to be Owl (real name Eren Krueger), the Eldian spy who was pretending to be a Marleyan soldier and who sent information in secret to the Eldian Restorationists. He also was secretly an inheritor of one of the nine Titans, the "Attack" titan, and so he asked Grisha to transform into a titan and eat him so that Grisha could inherit the Attack titan's powers.
So Grisha ate him and inherited the Attack titan powers, and then was found by Keith outside of wall Maria.

After it goes back to the current timeline with Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Hange, etc. where they inform Historia (who's now queen) and the other higher-ups about Grisha's secrets. If you remember, the previous King Reiss decided to erase all of the island people's memories, so Historia decides to "return all of the memories he took from the people" and have an announcement telling everyone about all the secrets:
-that the titans are in fact Eldian humans
-that everyone on the island is an Eldian, a "subject of Ymir"
-that King Reiss built the 3 walls and erased everyone's memories

Forgot to mention that the Colossal, armored, and beast titans' mission was to reclaim the "Founding Titan" (which Eren now has the power) from the island, called "Paradis" by the Marleyans.

Eren, Armin, Mikasa, and co. then take horses to go travel to the place where Eldians were transformed into titans, find a beach there with the ocean.

So then after there's a 3-year timeskip, and so 4 years after the Battle of Shiganshina.

-Marley is in war with the Middle-Eastern Union, which was triggered 4 years ago, after they lost the Colossal and the Female Titan. With the loss of two Titans (the Colossal (eaten by Armin) and the Female titan (Annie hasn't been shown yet), Marley's military capabilities were greatly reduced. This loss of power was noticed by the Mid-East Allied Forces, a coalition of territories against the nation of Marley, and thus war was declared in the year 850 which is now known as the Marley Mid-East War.

-The final two titan shifters are the "Jaw Titan", Galliard, and the "Cart/Mule Titan", Peak. So now we've seen all the 9 shifters. Unfortunately Ymir who had the "Jaws Titan" powers was presumably sent to Marley and was eaten by the Galliard guy...so yeah she was killed offscreen and the Galliard guy now has her memories and powers.

-The Marley is looking for successors for the powers of the Armored Titan and Beast Titan, and in the timeskip we kind of follow 4 out of 5 children candidates as the successors. We see Reiner with facial hair now too.

-We're shown a meeting with Marleyan officials discussing. Titans will soon be obsolete and thus Zeke prooses a siege on Paradis Island to attempt to take back the founding titan after they failed to do so 3 years ago.

-Looks like Eren, Armin on the island has grown to be more powerful and strong. Possibly strong enough to defeat the Marley. Apparently Marley sent battleships to the island before and that Eren and Arming destroyed them.

According to Marley history textbooks, Marley was a powerful nation in ancient times. However, over 1,800 years ago, the dominion of Marley was threatened when Ymir Fritz, a queen of the Fritz family who ruled the "Subjects of Ymir", came in contact with the "source of all organic material" and gained the power of the Titans. After Ymir's time, her "soul" was split into nine Titans who inherited her power and formed the Eldian Empire.

The true fault is at producers, waiting 4 years to make/air the second season, meanwhile milking S1 a LOT by putting all their efforts in licensing games that only covered S1 stuff and also non-canon live action movies and recap movies and other stuff :( And its not because "lack of material" because all the material that this season will cover had already come out in printed form even before the first season aired. 2015 would've been perfectly reasonable for this season, then another one in 2017 and still there being so much manga stuff so it would be hard to catch up.

Also this season is just one cour/12 episodes unlike the two cours of the first one. Last season ended with Eren fighting Annie and breaking a piece of the wall revealing a dormant titan inside, whereas she crystallized and they put her in some underground shit place lol.

In 2013 it was like the best ranked production, this year its barely in the middle of the ranking. Almost everyone and their mothers knew years ago what happens plot wise, I know some people who don't like manga but just grabbed it because they were tired of waiting so long for the series to continue the story. With this lack of interest many have I don't see how will they want to keep producing the series :(

Season 1 covered chapters 1-34 in 25 episodes.
Season 2 will cover I think chapters 35-50 in 12 episodes (right now its at the middle of the season and its on chapter 42). At this rate who knows when (if ever) it will cover the remaining chapters (currently 93 have been released). They could've then done this season in 2015, then another 12 episode one this year (covering the following arc which goes from chapter 51 to 70) and they would still be behind the manga by almost 25 whole chapters.

Holy shit, didn't expect it to get so good. I actually started liking it more after the whole Ymir+Reiner+Bertholt reveal with Hange, the political stuff, and with the whole story of Historia. Before it really just felt like a distopian shounen but now the story is much more interesting after all the reveals.
Also the story doesn't feel drawn out at all and the background history isn't some crazy clusterfuck. The infodumping can be pretty bad sometimes but it makes sense to have it after being in the dark for so long. And I think having the timeskip and following kids on the Marleyan side of the story is a good move from Isayama.
