I see where you are coming from but essentially it was the same as topdecking a new card.
You say that he can modify every card he draws into a winning one but it's not since the card evolved into something with an upgraded effect.
If it's about losing by drawing a useless card then that would be even more unstylish. I cant remember an instance when that happened. Is it realistic? It is but it's not entertaining.
Why modify a card if they could have him topdeck? I dont know and I know it's somewhat offputting but the "build-up" was nice and the prospect of cards, other than monsters, being upgraded was something interesting.
In the end it happened to one card only and never appeared again. If you are worrying about tension breaking i would worry about Astral not being able to lose a Numbers duel, something that looks like it will likely happen to Ignis as well.

I liked the cyerpunk-esque setting, with a cyberspace people go in to duel (and probably do other stuff as well, but only the card games will matter). I also like the setup with the big company vs a group of hackers, let's see how that develops.

Also surprising the episode had no duels. Worked in its favor, usually first YGO episodes get pretty awkward trying to introduce both the new duel gimmick and the main characters at the same time, focusing just on the characters and setting was the right choice.
