You don't find many successful stories that show actual character development and have no fear in trying new things. Not to mention that instead of just churning out chapter after chapter, Miura would rather wait for inspiration and release something actually good.

Why was Skull Knight so happy?

the beginning of berserk was actually somewhat decent. guts killing the kid and griffith's view about not wanting to simply live for the sake of living but wanting to serve a higher purpose was pretty good.

everything post-golden age is pure garbage though. even the golden age was terrible at times with the amount of rape and edge.

I don't really agree with this, I've gotten the vibe that guts still despises Griffith but is starting to understand his methods; in the way of putting ideals before everything else. Notice whenever guts didn't have a specific goal i.e. casca,gang protection,hawk revenge, etc he was pretty directionless and that led to the mericiless singlemindedness of destruction.
