I think if the villains were any less one-dimensional, then PH would squarely land into evil territory. Brainwashing somebody who is at least morally ambiguous and not actively trying to fuck somebody they know over just wouldn't feel justified for me, unless it's in Mementos, since Mementos targets aren't really expanded upon much.
Though it's kind of questionable how their brainwashing even works on a psychological level. It doesn't seem like it just plain rewrites everything, but just takes away one particular derangement from a person, and then everything else is caused by what they are capable of, but I don't think it's specified (at least as far as I have played).
Dunno, I guess I kinda care about moral ambiguity, but only because I'm usually really disgusted by any kind of brainwashing.

The distinction here is that you're using supernatural means to impact their state of mind. You're bypassing their normal self and directly affecting their subconscious, and impacting the way they think in a such a way that makes it so they have no say or true understanding of what happened. This might be an unpopular opinion, but Akechi was right about the phantom thieves. Changing a person's heart against their will is murdering the person that they used to be. They aren't who they were and essentially the phantom thieves were "killing" the people by changing their hearts.

At least Akechi didn't torture anyone. Also he's the best character I can't wait until Atlus makes a spinoff in which he's alive.
