K-on's characters are really realistic or at least make a lot of sense. Ritsu and Mio feel like genuine people with motives and feelings, Azusa's ideas of herself and her friends evolve over the course of the show, and Mugi is a really well written character whose personality comes out in subtle ways in a few scenes. Yui's somewhat unrealistic but she holds the show together pretty well.

In Tamako Market there's a few episodes devoted to certain characters that I really like. Tamako Market is a little lacking in characters and plot in comparison to the other shows I like I'll admit, but it makes up for it with individual episodes and amazing direction.

yes but compare him with Holden from The Catcher in the Rye who could also be boiled down to that you see a very obvious difference in quality. Shinji is a pretty decent character, for anime standards, because he was actually based on a real person, but he still has the problem of being wayyy over exaggerated with his emotions, which is also a problem in moe shows.

As a licensed Anime Historian & Expert and creator of The authoritative mosaic which was posted in this thread, it is because of accessibility. Anime hipsters don't know Japanese, and older stuff tends to have more linguistic content that remains untranslated in English. Geidai uploads a bunch of graduate shorts every year with subtitles, so they can watch that handful and whatever else gets uploaded with subs or no linguistic content and feel good about themselves. Of course you can't expect anime hipsters to spend any money on DVDs and Blu-Rays; they might spend a twenty to visit a local festival, since you get a lot of hipster cred for going to a film festival, so it is much easier to pretend that whatever isn't online doesn't exist, and the large majority of what does get uploaded online is new, usually student shorts.

You're saying the linguistic content matters in most shorts. They don't. I've watched many untranslated shorts with dialogue with a modest understanding of Japanese at best because they are made with aesthetic invention / formal expression in mind first and foremost.
