>Villian wants to make the world a better place
Hitler wanted to make the world a better place
Mao wanted to make the world a better place
Stalin wanted to make the world a better place
Pope Gregory VII wanted to make the world a better place
>Hero wants to protect [_____] and doesn't care about anything else.
>Villian just wants a quiet life

but this covers nearly 99% of everything

Stalin didn't want to make the world a better place, he was just utterly obsesses with his power over others. He could not give a flying fucking what happened to the Soviet people as long as he was still in charge.
>Villain just has a grudge against the mc
>>157012927
If you really think about it. Every villain in history fictional and non-fictional wanted to make the world a better place in their own way. Lucifer, Big Brother, Hitler, Imperial Japan, every communist regime ever etc.

>Stalin didn't want to make the world a better place
Sure he did, he was just extremely self-centered and ruthless about it.
>>157013373
He really didn't . He purged his party (and country) multiple times to continue to consolidate his power, this included those who were instrumental in other purges. He imprisoned and enslaved millions of his own people, he removed references to old communist members that were instrumental in the movement (Lenin being the biggest) and had Trotsky assassinated, even when he was literally on the other side of the world and was no threat whatsoever to him.
Best story is the one one with a hero-like vilkain that is actually in the right and an anti hero that is just put against him because of the circumstances

Sort of like Berserk, or at least how everyone in Berserk views Griffith and Mozgoose.

>I need muh manichaeism
Kill yourself.
>>157013512
I'm not seeing the contradiction. Stalin's end game was a communist world and did whatever he thought necessary to achieve that. That he was ruthless, paranoid, and obsessed with power is because he was product of a world where those traits were necessary to survive and get things done. You think Lenin, Trotsky, and a ton of those communists who got fucked were all nice guys and mean ol' Stalin ruined everything? Hell no, betrayals, purges, enslavement of peoples were present before Stalin came to power. They simply got outplayed.
Power was a means to an end and to get what he wanted, Stalin needed to secure a lot of power. If Stalin was simply a self-aggrandizing despot, he wouldn't have done a lot of that communist crap he did.

His endgame was power. If he thought a capitalist system would get him that power more efficiently he would have gone with that.
