It's pretty crazy that this is the exact point the manga was at when the anime started. I remember reading through it in a few days before watching the first episode, and I ALMOST got through to this part unscathed. My biggest mistake was thinking I could get away with being on /a/, in a fucking SnK thread no less, and hovering over a spoiler. It really was entirely my fault, and if I had just waited one more hour to go on the threads, I would have faced the full surprise. I think I was at Castle Utgard and had already read the part where Reiner realizes Ymir can read the can.

But I remember not understanding "Armored Titan" at some point, and had to go back and reread that first chapter. He had completely slipped by me and didn't stand out as special among the Titans because he didn't look as detailed. I couldn't really place Reiner as him because of that, and also because I wasn't taking much time to really sit down and speculate. The Colossal Titan always stood out, and I remember wondering if he was the King or some sort of general in the military who had secretly gone rogue, but even then I wasn't sure about that because I didn't know if shifters were a thing.

When Eren first got eaten, I was ready to believe that he was actually dead considering how many named characters had just died in such a short span of time. For a short time, I even thought Reiner and Thomas were the same character, at least until Reiner was shown again. I could have seen Armin or Mikasa becoming the main character and carrying on Eren's legacy, or maybe even a chain of main characters following the deaths of the previous ones. When Titan Eren showed up, I think that everyone had their suspicions, but at the same time weren't ready to just go with it considering everything that was happening so far.

I didn't realize Annie was the Female Titan until the reveal, and while it is obvious in hindsight, I hadn't seen her for a while and she wasn't on my mind.

Reiner being the Armored Titan and Bertholdt being the Colossal Titan wasn't a common speculation back before the actual reveal. If the series was more popular, I'm sure that it would have been much more common to see it brought up. But I remember a thread on /a/ where someone had screencapped some forum post from a year before the reveal speculating that it was Reiner, and by extension, Bertholdt, but a lot of the people responding weren't too open to the idea. And it's completely understandable why. Reiner seemed like such a good guy. He risked his life, helped others, and even had occasional moments (like the "Gotta marry her" thing with Christa) that made people not want to think it was him. The stuff leading up to Castle Utgard only solidified these feelings, even if the occasional "Huh?" moment arose. There were a good amount of these moments in hindsight, like his conversation with Bertholdt and Annie in Trost, the thing with the tin can, the bizarre reaction to Ymir being a Titan, and others. But they were the kind of things that you would just gloss over if you were reading a large quantity of the series in a short time frame. I also think that nobody expected the Colossal, Armored, and Female Titans to be children/teenagers during their initial appearances, or that they were characters they knew from an early point of the manga.

The genius of the reveal is that it's done so casually, as if it were a common, everyday fact. To many people, the Colossal Titan and perhaps Armored Titan were the main antagonists, the big shockers being saved for a much later date. The sense of immersion you felt was unreal, because you were just as surprised as Eren. You weren't ready to believe it. You weren't ready to deal with all the implications. You had no build-up that lead to an inevitable conclusion. It just came seemingly out of nowhere.

About 3 or 4 times, it would be a solid 8/10 scene had it not been ruined by a couple of small things. Maybe I'm expecting something perfect but this is supposed to be a pretty high point in the series:

The way Reiner just abruptly dumps everything on us just doesn't sit well with me, it feels as though I'd rather watch the scene dreading the moment they tell him the truth than going "..what?". It would be less of a shocking moment but shocking moments aren't necessarily good, and in this case, it didn't help with the build-up at all. Sasha's was stupid as well in such a big scene.

They nailed the "are we doing it right here?!" moment but the way Armin constantly shouting nothing but "Eren!" just does my head in, there isn't even that much emotion in Armin's VA when they shout Eren, its just a really loud sound that gets irritating. The CGI was unnecessary and just took me out of the scene completely.

8/10. Everything was done right here except I feel we should've gotten a quick flashback montage of all the deaths that occurred in Episode 1, which would then show Eren's mother being eaten alive. That shit would've made for a much more intense and emotional scene as it reminds the audience just how much has happened to Eren because of them. They went with the "traitorous brothers in arms" route which I felt isn't telling of the big picture of this series, which is about suffering, and Eren losing his mother was what started all his suffering in the first place.

The story isn't character driven, it's mystery and shock driven. All the high points revolve around these le epic twists xD that you're not supposed to see coming, because they're rarely hinted at (aka, zero logic, maximum le hype).

Look at Hunter x Hunter's big moments and you will see they are all about the characters. (Spoiler)Gon's transformation scene with Neferpitou was brilliant. It brought Gon's fucked up morals to light and Pitou's desperation to keep Komugi alive. When Gon realises what he has done was wrong, it was all too late and it all culminates in this massive explosion where the episode leaves on. Everything, from Gon's incredible potential that was spoken about, to the Nen Vows and Restrictions system that Kurapika told him about, to Gon's twisted morals which were constantly hinted at, all the way up to Nen being stronger after death was all foreshadowed and everything made perfect sense. Attack on Titan doesn't because it tries to shock you and cover up with "le split personality" which is as lazy as you can get when trying to explain character motivations.

Eren doesn't have many aspects to his character but he nails it pretty well when Isayama can write (half the time). This "making your deaths the most excruciating possible" line was good. Trying to fuck Reiner up without arms was hilarious. His rage isn't as impressive as, say, Guts, but it's still pretty well done and lively enough to make him endearing in a way.

And then he gets boring with clunky dialogues the other half of the time.

I didn't expect to see the colossal titan there, I was expecting to see him as the last super world boss, and not as a fucking scaredy cat of a dude, like what the fuck?
