Ping Pong is my favorite anime from the 2010s so far.

I enjoyed it too, but you know, despite it looking like ass. The action sequences have a decent sense of weight and speed which is essential for a sports series, but as virtually any other decent sports anime has shown, you can achieve that and look nice.

China of all people is the only one that isn't alone on Christmas.

Quite a few reasons. But my personal favorite is the realistic way they handle athletic competition at a high level. Every sports anime Ive seen is either fujoshit or just plain bad. Its like they are shows about boys that just happen to be on a sports team. Ping pong is about competition and it really does a good job of making the characters' motivations realistic and understandable. But you dont have to have played sports to relate to the final message which is truly an achievement.

God its so fucking genius sometimes. That moment when Peco gets goose egged by China and he realizes just how small his worldview is, despite thinking he was the best his entire life. Fuck thats such a real and heartbreaking reality that kids go through everyday. It breaks some kids. Kids who were told growing up that they are special and that they can do anything, suddenly have to confront this reality that it was all just a big lie. Peco understandably gives up and basically goes "I didn't care anyway". I feel like a lot of people go through this phase, and some are better at dealing with it than others. But that feeling of "thats unfair, fuck it, im not gonna try" is such an easy thing to give into. The show handles it so well, never really lecturing or reprimanding Peco or the audience, just showing the sad state of it all.

In classic Masaaki style, he takes all these cynical realities (Peco failing, china failing, Manabu failing) and turns them into something inspirational. But its not a sappy "everyone's a winner" type of message. In sports, and in life, sometimes there's only one winner, and more often than not it probably wont be you. So why should anyone bother to play such a rigged game? The same reason you did things when you were a kid, because it was fun, because you enjoyed it. The question of "Who do you play ping pong for?" can really be extended to "What drives you?" Which is something each person has to find out for themselves.
