Mashiro was a nice girl and all, but just not a good match for Sorata. She's just so far above him and he has no real hope of catching up to her. They'd never truly understand each other and a relationship between will likely end poorly. He needs a girl like Nanami who understands his struggles and will walk beside them as they both chase their dreams.
