As a huge Ghost in the Shell fan, I went into the theater expecting to hate this movie (even though I ponied up for the 3D IMAX ticket, go figure).

Honestly, I DID like it. With entertainment like this, I always ask myself "How would I've done this better". And for this movie, I can't think of anything. It had all the heart of the original and even took time to add in little tidbits like Batou's dog. It combined a lot of different elements but wasn't afraid to add new plotlines (like the Major's youth and I LOVED they didn't actually show what she looked like). After all, who wants to see the same thing we've seen a thousand times only live-action?

However, there was one GLARINGLY stupid scene that almost ruined the movie for me...the lesbian (kinda) scene. In the trailer, you see the Major kissing some random girl. I kept wondering who she is and what the backstory on the two of them was. NOPE! Just some random fucking person she bumps into along the street. Oh well, at least there's a sex- NOPE! Well...at least they kiss NOPE!. I pray to the anime gods, what the holy fuck happened? What was the point of it? Just to show she (kinda) likes women? So...they filmed a kissing scene and SHOW it to you in the trailer and then removed it for the movie?! I swear to fucking god, when I get the blu-ray, I'm ripping it and removing that scene and pretending it didn't happen (and maybe a few scenes of the city...jesus we GET it, it's futuristic).

Oh and I agree, Batou fucking ruled. Reminds me, I need to get my cell of him with background pencil sketch) framed. I have Kusanagi done, I should really get around to doing him (both are from the scene when they're on the boat in the first movie).

Funny, every reputable critic shit on it for being a pale imitation of the 1995 movie, which was considered good.

But let's take the word of some autist over people who actually know what they're talking about.

Yeah it was alright. It had faults for sure. Frankly ScarJo, as much as I like her, was boring as fuck. Major has never been boring. Serious, sure, but quirky. And even comical in the manga. Never boring.

The supporting characters were much better. The justifications for major's backstory were fine to me. I chalked it up to the fact that every single adaptation of GitS is different or deviates some in details like that from the others, so making shit a bit different for a more Western audience really wasnt a big deal. And I even really liked the scene with the Mom.

Overall...C+, maybe B- in my book. Coulda been better, maybe even great, but its okay enough to watch or rewatch if its on Netflix eventually.

Batou and Togusa were fine but both were kind of fucked over. Batou's fight scene was choreographed horribly and cut ridiculously short. All this build up for a very stilted payoff.

At least he looked cool as shit; his actor did a great job with the shitty material he had to work with. Togusa felt like Togusa, but he's barely in the movie at all.

Funnily enough, Aramaki/Beat Takeshi felt like he sleptwalk through this movie. I usually like the guy, but holy fuck he didn't care. His only good scene involved a shootout, and bizarrely enough, it's the best action scene in the movie.

No, I didn't. I went with five friends and one of them, the biggest GiTS fan of us, fell the fuck asleep. The movie's number one biggest problem is that it's boring as shit. Motoko/ScarJo feels like she looked at the script, saw she was in a robot body, and opted to move about as mechanically as possible. Granted, the original movie had Motoko feeling kind of odd/inhuman with the way she looked, moved, etc. But there was a mystique about her that made the character interesting.

I'm not saying the original movie was some well-written masterpiece when it came to characters and shit; it's a slow, terribly paced movie, albeit a good one. But the live action adaptation is just this weird mess of ideas, awful pacing, questionable acting from its leads, even worse fight scene choreography, uninspired virtually 1:1 copies of iconic scenes from the original anime movie, and an unnecessary origin story for Motoko.

I also think they kind of lost an opportunity to at least make a quick social commentary on the standards of beauty; Motoko is/was Japanese before her cybernetic conversion, and a subtle nod to the fact that the EVIL COMPANY made her a white woman would've been interesting. Like that scene where Motoko's staring at a mannequin that looks like her. Just something THAT subtle would've given this movie a little more depth
