I don't know how the negotiations go in the LN. In the WN most of what pads it out is internal monologue and Subaru looking to Rem for emotional support, and getting her to give him a good smack on the back when he's getting a bit too nervous.

Finally started back on reading Arc 3, and it's really seeming like the white whale fight is when Subaru becomes more conscious of his attraction to Rem. The narration describes how ghastly a sight she is with her smile dyed in blood, but for some reason she just looks noble and unbearably lovely to Subaru.

To me it seems fairly obvious by now what is going to happen later, that is if some theories are correct.
If time fuckery is actually happening. I'm going to consider Satella to be the time fuckery version of Emilia and the "first" Emilia.

We don't know for sure if Re:Zero follows the same alternative timelines theory like Nasuverse does (just so everyone is familiar with what I'm saying, some people might not know unless I use references) or something akin to a late Nasuverse in which some event made the timelines diverge (I'd say that started happening when Subaru was ported into the world the first or second time), we might just not know so Subaru isn't put through that much shit (can't ask him to see the bright side of infinite timelines now, can we?).
Anyway, now that the above is out of the way, has anyone noticed how each and every time Subaru dies or does something different (IFs), Emilia always ends up with her life changed in major ways? Even if we consider the more jokey ones like the Harem IF.
Since there's a theory that Subaru is Flugel, Satella that knew this version of Subaru (who he might just become anyway), might have just been the Emilia that has been rejected by Subaru in a case of "I choose Rem.", did the shit she did (the witches do claim that it's Satella that did all of that by herself) and now is trying to get Subaru back AND try to fix everything (or just end her own misery, she asks to be killed, maybe that's why she snatches people and tries to give them powers).
Hence why we have Echidna that is so reluctant to talk about the future with Emilia and why she is so angry about the prospect and hates Emilia so much.

And maybe in the part in the third trial about Emilia "hating" someone the first time they've met, I'd say that's Rem. It might be that she wakes up with her partial or intact memory but no one remembers her, I doubt we'll get a full happy ending, and that is a possibility.
