Nicotine itself is very relaxing to smoke, and Japanese society is very stressful to be a part of in a way. Unless you work in the entertainment field or as a higher up then you'll catch a lot of flack for you behavior even if it isn't necessarily bad or unprofessional. On top of long working hours, so nicotine is pretty great.

If it weren't for the fact that their diet was pretty rich with probiotics and antioxidants then they'd be in trouble health-wise. I wonder how much sulforaphane or glucosinolate glucoraphanin they get there too.

Smoking is ubiquitous among most media. It makes characters appear stoic, carefree and in the moment.
Japan and asia in general has much higher rates of smokers than america, and somehow lower rates of lung cancer, I guess they dont demonize it as much as burgers do. In 3D japan though you cant just smoke anywhere like in the US, there are "smoking zones" outside, as opposed to no-smoking areas.
Anyway its a waste of money and most people who smoke wish they hadnt started so I'd say don't get into it.

1. Cigarettes are cheap. 420 yen gets you a good pack of smokes, and this is after they increased the price. They were even cheaper back in the day.

Just gonna point you to my earlier post, but a big part of the reason why the Japanese have that extremely good life expextancy is due to their diet. Smoking isn't as dangerous as everyone says, but is especially true if you have a diet which includes glucoraphanin, sulforaphane, and isothiocyanate which are present in some vegetables. I don't know the full-breadth of the common Japanese diet, but if they eat a lot of vegetables and such that contain these substances then that no doubt plays a large part in how well they live.

Everyone talks shit about the inconsistent animation quality but they often forget to mention that it has one of the best and most fitting artsyles in anime. It's not flashy so people don't praise it as much as Tatami's or Mononoke's for example, which is unfortunate.

Also, Reki smoking means a lot more than just looking "cool". Basically a symbol of self-destruction along with the ashes being a symbol of rebirth. Reki gave Rakka her name after some ashes fell down her cigarette, that alone has a shit ton of implied meaning.

Knowing about the outside world would kill the show. The drama stems from the ambiguity created by this great unknown.

Reki separating herself from the other Haibane along with her nihilistic/fatalistic worldview surfacing, Rakka's loss of innocence, selfishness for not being able to get over Kuu's DoF because of her own disturbed comfort (not like she doesn't care about Kuu, it's more like being torn in half between empathy and selfishness, one of the big themes of the show). And the setting that sacrificed knowledge for happiness, the same hollow happiness and warmth of the 1st part that feel undeserved for people who are filled with guilt and self-hatred.

It would've been nice to know a bit more, but the setting was never really meant to be explored literally, it's a huge allegory. Having a setting being too detailed would've killed the mysterious atmosphere of the show. The climax takes place in a small room, after all.

Smoking is actually fucking fantastic, the only reason you're all confused is because of years of anti-smoking propaganda. Anyone who has the reaction that it's disgusting or nauseating is pretty much a faggot who was brainwashed in childhood and has therefore maintained that cunty childish mindset. Don't get me wrong, you SHOULDN'T smoke because it really is addictive and expensive as fuck, but there's a reason people get into it despite all the drawbacks. It's some good shit. And from a visual standpoint, it's a very good prop capable of displaying all kinds of different attitudes. You want to drive home the point that a character is relaxed and doesn't give a shit about society? Show them smoking while reclining against a wall and staring off into the distance or some shit. You want to show that a character is being destroyed by stress? Show them being all fucking jittery and tense, inhaling cigarettes by the pack to calm their nerves.

It is a versatile visual device, which is why animators like to use it. Hell, it's a versatile social device in real life. Most people I know smoke as a social activity, because it forces you outside and pretty much immediately puts you in alignment with everyone else you find smoking out there.

I pretty much just ran out of characters, so I excluded all the basic, obvious shit.

Cigarettes are roughly 7-9 dollars a pack depending on what kind of deal you're getting. That's pretty much nothing if you're smoking a pack a week, but it really does stack up if you're inhaling them left and right.

Then again, it's your own choice what you want to spend money on. I thumb my nose at fatasses that eat expensive takeout and fast food instead of cooking because it's unhealthy and expensive when there's a better alternative (Sounds hypocritical, but there IS a reason I quit.), but I do think that people should have the right to make those choices if they want to.

As far as whether or not it stinks, I personally love the smell. Everyone in my family smoked, and the scent of tobacco on my index finger after a cigarette was heavenly and I can still remember it. I loved it. It's totally subjective, and if you smoke you will most assuredly grow to like it. So that point basically wraps into the point about choosing not to smoke because OTHER people are bothered by it, which wraps into the point I made about other people being abrasive about it.

The lung capacity hit isn't a big deal, but then again, I stayed pretty active.
