It's really low budget and the aesthetic isn't gonna be for more casual fans. Also it's quite slow and subtle in its storytelling, so it has that barrier.

It was pretty popular on /a/ in the past, one of those everyone ought to know shows. Then again, on current /a/ people complain they don't know who Natsume refers to.

Mononoke has had a US release maybe a year ago so awareness with general weebs should be up.

It's a beautiful show without the pretentiousness of other well regarded shows mostly due it being a retelling of older established folk tales.

The one thing that bothered me was that nauseating effect where they made the movement very choppy. Aside from that the animu was great

If I remember correctly it had a slow start but the latter episodes were fire. I enjoyed it and so did most of my friends.
