It's probably at least partially due to the apparent rise in "anime analysts" on Youtube. I've seen a few of their videos and everyone in the comments act like they've become intelligent or something when it comes to anime because they thought about shows for more than a minute.

As I said in the OP, it's not funny. Period. It's full of VERY dated references which aren't relevant or funny, and I doubt they were relevant or funny when the show aired. It's just such a stereotypical "so randumb! XD" show that it's cringe to watch today. It's the kind of anime I would imagine a high schooler watching in his sophomore year and then demanding his mom order him $200 worth of Pocky and Ramen.
