The point isn't that Digimon is a kids show nor is it that it's made by Japan.
It's all about the tone and atmosphere in their storytelling. There's a somberness and tension in Digimon that other shows of that era like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh just don't have. The plots were certainly convoluted and the monsters and characters were gaudy and loud but when it came to presenting inter-personal/relationship drama between the cast of characters, Digimon was unmatched. It had a level of maturity with it's delivery for a show aimed at children that had more depth than simply blood, death and boob jiggle.
