Read books. Lots of fucking books. Find reasons why other writers make their characters likable, then steal the fucking idea and change it slightly. Look up writing prompts, listen to music, then try to imagine what your character would do. Little by little, you'll flesh out your characters. You can try to imagine a big end game scenario and try to create a way to get there as you go. Just remember nothing's set in stone and you can change shit as you please.

Stop trying to blame shit on skills or talent. You try or don't try at all. Stop trying to project your fucking insecurities and weaknesses on everybody else, you don't even want to put out the effort to find out if you have talent or can make it yourself. When somebody spends months or years trying to hone a skill and somebody attributes their skills to talent once they finally get recognized, it's a fucking insult.

you're well on your way. spend more time practicing the most basic construction of shapes first. you need to hone your foundations before stylizing. pay more attention to joint connections. get used to drawing simple overlapping shapes in isolation. spend more time doing speed poses while paying close attention to line of action. don't worry about completing the drawing just get the dynamic down. swift strokes, and again, keep the shapes very simple at first. slowly work your way up to complexity and stylise later. study life, but also analyze styles you like. don't be afraid to experiment. also, study skeletal structure. it really will make your life a bit easier.

i'm still learning myself but these steps have helped my drawings look less stiff. drawing ballet poses is a fun way to practice dynamism. sorry for laying this out in a disorganized manner.

Sometimes, you have to challenge or mentally corner yourself into doing it. Convince yourself that drawing will be more productive than shiposting or masturbating until 3am in the morning. That's how I forced myself into it. You're going to feel like shit at first too, because you've already developed the ability to recognize art, and your current skill level won't be enough to appease yourself.

Do you own any manga or artbooks at all? Place a piece of paper over a page and gently, lightly trace over it. Steal the artist's body shapes and facial expressions for your own.Your art won't look exactly like them, but you might ingrain a few of their techniques into your own as you develop.

Trace over it, and try to imagine the "skeleton" or proportions the artist used. I copied things like the positioning of the eyes in proportion to the face. Read the books, save the tutorials, then close /ic/. Find videos, streams, or chats where artists demonstrate drawing from the ground up.

Learn how to be bored. Seriously. Most kids have forgotten how to do it nowadays. Boredom is the most precious thing human evolution has created. It motivates you and makes you try all sorts of new things. Interesting things. Things that broaden your horizon.

It's easy. Just cut yourself off from the constant overstimulation for a while. Deny yourself video games for this month. The entire month. Resist the cravings of the addiction, and watch the miracle unfold. Boredom will help you start and do things with ease that you've procrastinated over for years.

Looks like the artist used more realistic proportions for the anatomy, since anime characters tend to be skeleton tier thin. A chase two rabbits, catch none thing.

Took me a while to learn hair flows and pokes out, as opposed to being large clumps of triangles like Goku or Cloud. If you mean the other lines, that's the original egg outline for the head. It's on a layer with lowered opacity so it could serve as a reminder how big the subjects head really was, as well as establishing the boundaries of where I attempt to place hair.

I don't really force myself to do it everyday just to do it, it's just when I feel like it (which is still very often). Once I get into it I can easily work the whole day.

I overall don't have much motivation problem since I have too many things I wants to draw, it's more time I'm lacking if anything. Though I do get lazy. It's really satisfying to draw once you go enough skill to do what you wants.
>>

I tried and I kep trying, but there's no clear cut guide to do it at all.
Until last year most of time I devoted to learn to draw was.. trying to find some good fucking guides and advices on the internet and never managed to find anything.
Finally said fuck it and just started to grind posemaniac and half trace over my favorite artists. I got great results but I still have no idea how to color or have nice lines in one go.
And after like 7 months of drawing anatomy almost daily I feel like I hit a wall.

I find motivation in telling myself "just draw what you want" instead of trying to master poses and anatomy. It's not like I'm trying to sell my art or get Likes on the internet, so I'm pretty content with what I can draw well, which is the face from 2-3 angles and the body from 2.

Several pieces. Make sure you map the tablet screen at 1:1 ratio to your computer screen, then just draw until you become familiar with drawing without looking at the surface your pen is on. If you never get used to it but your regular art's fine, then digital drawing just might not be for you until you put down that $1000+ for a Cintiq.

you never get there unless you work with a wacom cintiq or something but you get close enough within a few days of work. People oftens use stabilizer though.

A serious drawing tip, anon; the eyes is in the MIDDLE of the face. You only think it is higher up due to the fact that you ignore the space where her skull is. This applies for both realistic and anime style faces.

The reason your waifu looks like she lacks a brain is because of that.

At least you drew the eye sizes correctly. Namely you can draw the eyes as large as you like, but make sure to keep the distance between the eyes exactly one eye wide.

This rule is why so many anime faces have WIDE faces. By having large eyes it required wide faces to fit the eye gap in.

Pic very related. And happy drawing.

you need to push yourself- strive to complete full pieces of work; that means fully fleshed out characters interacting with each other or the environment

get out of your comfort zone! even if your work sucks (and it will), take note of what you did badly or struggled with and focus on filling those gaps before you start your next piece

it's hard and it sucks and it takes fucking ages but the result will be very much worth it

>An example of having big eyes, you need to have a wider face.
And that is actually why some many Western cartoons failed when they tried to deliberately make anime girl faces for parody. They just keep the average Western human head but then enlarge the eyes only.
As is mentioned many times, the "2d Anime face" is quite difficult to do right. But the first thing is to ensure that basic facial proportions are followed. The mouth and nose might be nearly non-existent, but they still have to be located at the right locations in relation to the rest of the face. It is how you can draw a face that is basically not human at all, but still looks "cute" because it obeyed human facial ratios.

From what I've heard, the problem with these guides is that they often learn you little 'tricks' but don't get to the core of drawing. This is also why a lot of manga/anime art is shit: before you can draw stylized humans, you first need to figure out things like human proportions, anatomy/skeleton structure, lighting, color theory, perspective et cetera. This is how you, to name a radical example, learn to draw breasts that move like actual breasts rather than fleshbaloons.

And that's a massive hurdle to overcome and I'm afraid of failing.

Traditional and digital are different mediums, theres no real advantage of one over the other aside from convenience. However, it's well known drawing on paper is a good way to practice your precision and speed as you can't make lots of layers to sketch shit, you can only make some thin guidelines and start the actual drawing right away.

Actually there is some truth to it, mainly if you're into using linework. Once you get used at drawing on paper you'll get more confident lining your works without spending so much time.

I gave up on lineart anyways so i don't draw on paper for 5-6 years already. This was my last lineart that i actually bothered to be precise with it.

It's all about balance. Yes, not practicing the fundamentals will result in you being a deviantart trier shitter.

But only doing fundamentals can result in you being one of those people who just sketch naked bald men in action poses, or even worse you might become Proko-tier in imagination drawing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOuIgevbHs8
>>
>>156670421
Wrong, might as well try everything so that you can improve at everything. Ignoring the basics is wrong but ignoring the rest isn't a good idea either.
>>
I tried, I can't. You always say it's never too late and everyone can learn to draw, but I've never actually seen anyone who started as shit as I am, over 25, and actually got anywhere. All these progress images, all of them started out fairly decent compared to me. I didn't doodle around as a teenager. I didn't even have art classes at school. I literally haven't picked up a pencil in 15 years, because I fucking hated drawing, because I was so bad at it, and now that I finally have a slight interest, I can't do anything.
>visit /ic/ sticky

>>
SAI, Illustrator, photoshop, krita, or clip studio paint?
>>
>>156670592
Everyone has the ability to become at least okay at drawing.

The problem is just that you have 25 years of not-drawing in your brain. So you gotta re-wire that, and it's gonna take a long time to do so. The brain is by design malleable, it's called neuroplasticity (which /ic/ usually mischaracterizes as the reason why adults CAN'T learn new things, when in reality it's the opposite.)

But if you don't have the mental fortitude to push through the struggling, then you're not gonna make it.
>>
>>156670561
>>156670572
sure, you will have to do something else eventually, but as far as I know the biggest mistake people do when they try to learn how to draw is go for whatever they had in mind from the beginning (in this particular case anime) without even trying to get a hold on anatomy first. and of course, some disgusting abomination gets created in the process
>>
>>156670870

>>
>>156670952
>but as far as I know the biggest mistake people do when they try to learn how to draw is go for whatever they had in mind from the beginning

I disagree.

Do both. doing just one or the other is a mistake. Just doing fundamentals is just as an big of a mistake as just doing stylization.

Improvement isn't a linear path where you go from point A to point B to all the way down to point Z.

Do anime when you start off, but also do your exercises and studies. Implement your studios to your anime. Implement anime to your studies.

>>156671076
>But none of us are good enough.
well the point is that your software isn't really what holds you back.

>>156670870
I use CSP and like it. It's basically an upgraded Sai. I used to use Photoshop, but it's not so great as a drawing application. CSP and Sai have better features for drawing, but Photoshop has better editing tools. Illustrator isn't good for anything except making logos. I haven't used krita, but I've heard good things about it and would recommend it if you're a cheapskate.
>>
>>156671157
>whereas just for lines the competition is more even.

I agree that if Photoshop is missing really one thing, it's being able to do perspective and symmetry lines like on CSP.
