I thought it was interesting in the VN how Nagisa's route was almost the only one in which Tomoya felt like a real character not a generic self-insert. The only other route that deals with his problems is Tomoyo's, though to a much lesser extent.

The anime isn't as clear on this, but it's important to her to be able to do her best and try to reach the same heights as normal people. Tomoya and her being able to improve themselves and accomplish that is central to the story. Probably the last thing she'd want is to be treated like she can't do normal things because she's sickly.

Clannad is pretty bad in terms of writing, not to mention the pacing is bull crap. However, I have to say that episode 18 of AS is pretty good, one of the only scenes where things actually felt natural instead of being forced melodrama.

The pacing is bad because the anime tries to shove most of the game routes into the same timeline. E.g. in the game Tomoya and Nagisa start dating after they have the conflict with the choir club and she decides to give up on remaking the drama club, before Sunohara gets his idea for the basketball game. But they had to include shit with Kyou and Tomoyo to try and adapt more of the game, so their relationship gets pushed back until after the play. That ends up removing other things too, like their first kiss, which happens when Tomoya goes on the picnic with her family; in the game they're dating at this point but in the show they aren't so it gets cut out in the show.

The first 8 episodes are more of the same thing, shoving in more game routes (Mei, Misae, Yukine); though to be fair the latter two convey some important information about light orbs, etc. After that everything is fine. The adaptation of After Story is a lot closer than the school arc. There are a few weird changes; e.g. Tomoya and Nagisa move out and start living together as soon as Tomoya gets his electrician job, but in the show they live apart until she finishes high school and they get married. I think the show actually makes some improvements on the game in the pregnancy arc and Ushio arc.

Yea this is probably why most people praise AS a lot while the first season is pretty meh.
But for secondaries you've gotta watch the first season to really feel the emotions of the second, so I tell people to take the first season as a semi slice of life with some romance elements, and take the second as a true romance anime.

Yeah you have to watch both. Honestly Clannad is just one of those things that you can't adapt properly. If you did a stripped down version that focused on Nagisa's route, the pacing would work much better, the relationship would develop properly, etc.; but then you run into the problem of the ending. How does Tomoya go about collecting light orbs, etc.? The story's too locked into the vn multiple route format. Maybe if they had covered each route individually (properly too, including the romance aspects) and then did a reset after each one it could have worked better. That's the only solution I can think of.

Maybe keep in the Fuko arc (since that actually meshes well with Nagisa's story and she has a role in After Story) and let him get one there. Then one from helping Nagisa put on the play, one from reconciling with Ushio, one from reconciling with his father.

Oh, and the game gives you a light orb for Yusuke getting back into music. There's also Sanae's light orb if they wanted to show more of her relationship with Tomoya. Akio's light orb is there too but the story with that one isn't that great.

I started Clannad and just got through Fuuko's story. Wow that was garbage. Please tell me it gets better. I really like the parts sprinkled inbetween with MC and Nagisa's interactions as well as with her family but it seems like a lot of the other characters are just in the way.

Minor spoilers but here is how it's going to break down in season 1:

Fuko arc -> Kotomi arc -> mix of Kyou and Tomoyo's arcs (these are finished in two OVAs) -> Nagisa arc. Nagisa interactions are sprinkled around in there but it isn't going to focus on her in earnest for a while.

Season 2 is much better than season 1. If you finish the show you'll be glad you stuck around through some of the shittier parts.
