Look I love the 97 series too but it was made with a budget of potato chips just like the new series. Fact is they used CGI in the new series so at least we got a select few good looking scenes among all the trash. Think Neon Genesis Evangelion: shit animation half the time at amazing animation. The 97 series didn't have the budget for much of anything impressive animation wise so it was mostly a power-point presentation of pretty stills or limited reused animation.
The new series sucks animation wise because the CG models were cheaply made and the director had no idea how to direct. At least the series has those few moments of decently animated scenes.
A few scenes of good animation followed but extremely sub par or mediocrity throughout is the reality.

I made a thread the other day since I finished the original anime with no reading of the manga, and wanted to complain about how overrated it is and some of the character decisions of both guts and griffith that made no fucking sense. I have now read the manga up to the same point (right after the end of the eclipse) and everything finally makes a lot more sense, and I regret watching that piece of dogshit. The only thing redeemable of it was the OST and I Zed, but the omission of so many important details and ending it at such a retarded point as the end of the eclipse makes the whole show garbage for me
