Is it actually worth reading or is it one of those where you invest so much time in to it that you have to force yourself to see it through?
Read it and find out.
>>156536388
I would if it wasn't so long
>>156536564
You don't need to read it in its entirety to gauge the quality.
>>156536590
What if it gets better in the second half?
one of the best mangas ever made, so give it a try.
>>156536663
Then that's its own problem. If a manga series bores you through the first 3 volumes, drop it.
I drop things when they bore me in the first 5 chapters. I don't feel the least bit bad about it.
It's not your responsibility to pay respect to a potential improve in quality in the last quarter of the series. You are not a teacher or a critic. You are just a consumer.
>>156536663
Dont worry it only gets worse.
Just read till the eclipse, where it should have ended, ignore the anons who disagree with me they are in too deep to start hating on it

it's a masterpiece until the fight with zod on the hill of swords.
right after that it become "just" a good manga.
>>156537300
>the eclipse, where it should have ended
I never heard that opinion before but now I kinda agree.
I'm ashamed of what/a/ has become. In 2018 people will be like
>Should I watch anime? Is it worth it?
>How about manga? What even is that? Comic books?
Only good arc was lost children
>>156536373
Beginning like 2 or 3 arcs are pretty good. Anything after that is shit, don't bother reading past the good parts. The latest arc is a pile of dog shit.
>>156537512
Wanting to know if a very long anime/manga is worth sinking a LOT of time in to is not the same as your little greentext
>>156537446
It was fine until they got on the boat and you all know it. The team up with Zodd got me amped. As did the "play as the villain" chapters with Griffith as the protagonist. Those were genuinely some of the best chapters in the entire series.
>>156537300
No, that's fucking retarded.
>>156537616
You should've already read it before you stopped being a lurker (if you ever even bothered to lurk).
And again, thinking 40 volumes is "very long" means you should lurk more before posting. 40 volumes is nothing.
>>156536373
I think it goes downhill a little bit but the early volumes are really worth a read.
>>156537616
It took me like 2 days to read all of it, it wasnt worth it by the way, but that should not be considered A LOT of time
>>156537300
I think you should read until the eclipse and then wait until the rest of Berserk is completed.
>>156537300
But the Conviction arc is even better than Golden Age
>>156537819
And Lost Children is even better than that
>>156537857
this
>>156537857
Lost Children is a parody of the first arc because Miura needed to prove he still knew what his manga was about. Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc is better.
Reading through your posts, OP, you're a piece of shit who doesn't deserve to have read Berserk. Literally kill yourself.
>>156537446
This is exactly how I feel about the series too anon. The Zodd fight was such a great fight too. I meant the series was still solid after, but the Zodd fight was the last real hurrah it had.
>>156536373
No, it's not worth reading. People only read it so they can be in on a 30 year long joke.
>>156537857

>>156536373
>there's people posting on /a/ right now that still haven't read Berserk

Gotta get to the Eclipse before it starts
I've never heard a person say that they regret reading Berserk.
Made this a few years ago.
>>156540641
That doesn't seem right.
Why is the boat ride so short?
Are you sure you mean "time" and not "chapters"?
>>156540677
The "time" axis isn't meant to be perfect. Just to give a sense of context for what is happening and how enjoyable it is.
>>156540567
It's legitimately good, back then and now.
It's all just contrarian hipster-dipsters that'll call it bad or mediocre.

>>156540641
Lost Children wasn't really unique though. It was pretty similar to the first arc but with less edge.
I understand why people don't like the trolls, I didn't at first, but after my 20th time reading Berserk in its entirety I found that Qliphoth and the trolls were some of the best high impact sexual violence in the series.and it was cool when guts turned into batman and went into the sea god don't hit me
>>156543965
It was pretty much the first arc but better written and Miura having a better grasp on Guts' character, while Guts was also at his most vicious. I think it's looked back so fondly now cause this was when the series epitomized the title and it was before all the party members.
>>156537983
That his signature move. He did the same shit to Griffith in their first fight.
>>156544099
his signature move is blowing his arm cannon on his surprised enemies face.
i stopped when guts went on a ship and griffith and zod do some political shit.
I have heard that the ship arc is extremly long and lost motivation.
Is it at least entertaining or do i have to force me through it?
>>156544089
I felt it was too big a jump in character from the count arc. I'd like to see how he went from fucking apostles and telling a loli to kill herself, to rescuing a loli and being all tsundere towards her.
I know Miura wrote himself into a hole from pg 1, but it'd be great if he just dropped the island and wrote and arc about that transformation, to AND from. Like he did with the boyhood arc.
>>156544548
The boat was long in realtime but relatively short for the series.
>>156544507
It isn't long, just boring. It was more annoying back when we were on it, but you can speed through it now. Plus there's a sort subplot where Guts flashes back to his pre BotH days but post Gambino days which I liked a lot. Anyone else thought that side story was neat?
>>156544607
Meant for >>156544507
>>156544507
The boat stuff took 10 years to write but not many chapters. You can get through it in a day.
It gets worse over time unfortunately. But the first 10 volumes or so are fucking awesome. Either way you have to read it to be on /a/. It's just one of those requirements.

>>156544649
>>156544725

>>156541710

>>156544548
This I can actually agree with. I actually really enjoyed the boyhood arc. But the Lost Children chapter was really just damage control for TBS arc desu. I'm not sure how much time passed between TBS and Lost Children Chapter, but I guess we all just excuse his extreme edge in TBS arc as him being fresh off the boat (heh) from The Eclipse and he was at rock bottom then. But even then, he wasn't like that when rescued by Skull Knight right after The Eclipse. TBS arc Guts was just kind of out of character.
>>156544725
Hey does anyone have that image edit where the guy and the girl are on the train thinking about each other. But it's edited so the guy is thinking about how long Berserk chapters are taking to release and how long they've been on the boat? I can't find mine.
>>156544633
It was a Freudian analogy to Miura's mental state. Very interesting when an author drops the story in the middle to draw teenage version of MC x random loli.
>>156544756
>only being into golden age arc
Put your grasses on
>>156544904
You picked the right person to ask
I read it up until the infamous Boat Arc, then dropped it because it's too much of a pain in the ass trying to remember story details when chapters are very rarely released. I might revisit the series after it finishes in three decades. If it finishes.
>>156545057
Thanks. Got another laugh out of it
>apostles and their sacrifices go to spoopy soul-screaming hell forever when they die
Where do the normalfags go?
I'm at the part where possessed tiger demons attack the aristocrat party and it's still pretty good. though i get the sense that it will be somewhat same-y and stale, from here on...
>>156545260
This is about the point where you realize we've been following the same general sub-arc since Gurren Lagann started airing.

>>156545423
Don't forget The Count's loli daughter. Only arc without any loli presence was Golden Age.

She was safely in the 14-15 range and Miura drew (published) the prototype for her around 3 years after highschool.

Nothing happens. Almost 30 years running and the plot has barely moved. Don't waste your time. You'll be dead before it's over.
The count was such an interesting guy. He parallels Guts pretty well (except he's ugly as hell).
>both get their waifu dicked by a monster (Femto, Pagan goat man)
>both swear revenge
>both go after a select group (apostles, heretics) indiscriminately
>both take pleasure in being sadistic toward their targets
But Guts is hot so it's fine I guess? Fucking normalfags.
>>156542602
No I don't.
Also it was on uni break and I just sat there for 16 hours a day reading. Not that hard desu though I had pretty bad eyestrain.
What can I say, berserk is really just that good.
>it takes too long for chapters to come out because of lots of detail!!!
>literally just excessive, uneeded strokes in every fucking panel.
If Murata can pump out a chapter or two in a month, all while having tons of necessary detail in every frame, then why the fuck can't this dude do the same?
>>156546892
Does anyone actually say that?
Maybe after sea god yeah, but now? Are you posting from 2011? Most people just think he's tired, rich, and into lolis. He's sick of it and doesn't even need to draw it for money since he can just license it to whomever. I'm sure his assistants are doing a lot of his work too.
But that doesn't mean I don't want him to keep drawing it until it puts him in the grave. I could give a shit about his happiness.

Read the entirety of it.
There's very few parts where I can actually say it's filler and doesn't need to be there.
The part people bitch about the most doesn't even drag on for that long, it just took 10 years to write that part, thus why it felt so long to true fans.
Anyway, yeah it's an amazing manga. I reread it at least once a year.

I mean we're definitely well past the half-way point but I dunno about "nearing its end"
I'd guess there's probably another 80-100 chapters left at least
>>156548481
There's still so much though. We have to see SK's and the Godhand's flashback. Actually didn't Miura say he plans to have a godhand flashback way back before the movies even aired? I'd like to see Zodd's past, and even other apostles in neo band of the hawk (though I doubt we'll get it), and there's just so much still. I'd hate for this to be rushed. I don't care if this finishes when I'm 50 and Miura is 80. A series that takes its time but irons out the details and has a satisfactory conclusion will always be better than a rushed ending. You can never undo that.
>>156548597
Oh absolutely, I'd love to see the story as fleshed out and complete as it could possibly be, rather than rush to an unsatisfying ending. But at the same time it would be an even greater shame if what was left of the story took so long to tell that it never reached that "satisfactory conclusion" and was just left with no resolution and dozens of threads hanging.
There's no guarantee that Miura will live until he finishes it. Hell, he could be hit by a car or fall down some stairs and die tomorrow.
Basically it's a catch-22 with no real solution and we're all fucked since Miura's got us by the balls so we just have to pray that he somehow manages to tie everything together sooner or later.
>>156548825
Our best hope is that Miura has a basic story outline in a safe or something so we can at least have something in case he dies.
>>156548991
There's no way he doesn't have notes for the whole thing.
I'm confident we'll see the end of Berserk, even if Miura isn't the one drawing it.
>>156536373
yess
>>156548597
Somebody tell that fucker he can put as many lolis as he wants into SK's backstory. Hell, he can make SK a loli. Just. Do . It.
>>156546281

>>156548202
Moonchild just needs to make him mortal through some astral asspulling connected to the fact that Griffith is running around in HIS physical body, using HIS dick, shitting out of HIS ass.
>>156549452
Goddamnit, anon. I have this dream where Miura is able to make a golden age tier flashback with Skullknight where we see Skully as the Griffith and Void to their relationship, seeing them drift apart as well as the betrayal, and even seeing Zodd before he was an apostle. Didn't they know each other for like a thousand years? So Zodd's actually been an apostle longer than most of the Godhand have been Godhand members.
I'd give everything in the world for a SK/Godhand flashback feat. Zodd that was Golden age tier quality.
>>156549577
and Void as Guts*

No. She died when Guts was forced to fight against the noble and the flower got smashed.
>>156537630
>faggot-ass monsters
>>156549750
Well she was kinda already dead before that. Guts just thought he could replant her before she was crushed.
>>156544818
TBS is more like a prototype. In fact when I recommend Berserk I suggest people to avoid the TBS arc since not only the art is kind of bad, but is feels kind disconnected with the rest of the manga but at the same time spoils stuff like the eclipse and the supernatural aspects of the setting (it's much better when you see it for the first time through Gut's perspective when he faces Nosferatu Zodd.
>>156544935
That fucking chapter.
Kept me awake for nearly a week after reading it.
I'm such a manchild loser lmao.
>>156549895
I'm not sure I can agree with this though. Yes TBS had a lot of problems writing wise, Guts was extremely edgy and it felt kind of aimless, but I think being introduced to the Godhand there is important. It makes their introduction in the Eclipse have that much more weight, cause you know who they are and what they're capable of, whereas if it's your first time seeing them in the eclipse you'll just be kind of lost. Add in to the fact that seeing Griffith's relationship with Guts in TBS arc is important and keeps us on our toes and curious as to why Guts hates him so much. I don't know but TBS arc while not being great on its own works to amplify the golden age arc and gives it that much needed sense of dread, especially in times when Guts and co. are at their happiest.
>>156549895
I actually like the black swordsman arc. It makes you seriously wonder what the FUCK Guts' deal is, what made him like this? Who damaged this guy to the extent where he doesn't even want to be touched?
I think it's important for his character, plus it works as an edgy/campy introduction to a pretty hard-hitting manga.
>>156550285
Yeah it definitely wasn't without its virtues. It gave Guts this air of mystery and was perfect for setting up the Golden Age Arc. On its own it works as a campy thing with a load of violence, almost like a high quality b-movie. It has this really metal feel and reminds me of like Dungeons and Dragons, it's very 80s.
>>156550285
>>156550411
i felt like miura wrote that shit expecting to just have a little fun and be done with it, but by the time golden age got rolling he realized he was far too deep to back out now
>>156550654
I really wonder how he was able to write TBS arc which was this nice and campy arc and then boom he made one of the greatest arcs in the history of the medium. It's still amazing to me.
>>156549895
>>156550114
>>156550285
>>156550411
Can we all agree that the first page of the manga shouldn't have ever been Guts bed-pressing the apostle that killed Corkus in hindsight?
>>156550822
hah, yeah, the first page is tonally so different from the rest of the manga that it definitely feels misplaced and COMPLETELY out of character.
>>156550822
Absolutely at best maybe we get introduced to the apostle in it's human form seducing Guts, and right before they have sex Guts blows the Apostles brains out. And even that while still kind of edgy works a lot better than the opening page. What's funny is I've seen people try to justify that page. Like Guts was possessed by the beast of darkness, or that he was at his lowest point, and just a number of excuses I can't remember. I'm not even sure Miura had Casca planned at the time.
>>156550959
>muh "Guts disassociated himself from sexuality and purposed every part of his body into a weapon for killing apostles, his dick included"
Haha, /a/
>>156551104
>>156550959
Yeah, there's no reason to try and justify it. It was edgy and smutty to catch the eye of the publisher, and it obviously worked. I'm glad it did though, we got a hell of a story from it.
>>156549895
>spoils stuff like the eclipse
The Golden Age arc is a lot more tense when you already know that it ends in betrayal. Foreshadowing and spoiling aren't the same thing
>>156536373
Just watch the 1990s anime, its better than the manga.
>>156551313
you could just ask someone to post the image nicely, anon
>>156551313
The only reason someone would say this is because it adapts the best arc in the series, and that adaptation is inferior to the original in every way. Even if it did have a stellar soundtrack. Not to mention whatever grievances you have with the series post eclipse, ending it at that point in the series is one of the worst endings ever.
>>156551230
This. I'm not sure why people conflate foreshadowing with spoiling so much. Having the eclipse be a twist that came left field would ruin the impact of it.
>>156551313
Just the fuck up you retard,
I made a thread yesterday since I finished the original anime with no reading of the manga, and wanted to complain about how overrated it is and some of the character decisions of both guts and griffith that made no fucking sense. I have now read the manga up to the same point (right after the end of the eclipse) and everything finally makes a lot more sense, and I regret watching that piece of dogshit. The only thing redeemable of it was the OST and I Zed, but the omission of so many important details and ending it at such a retarded point as the end of the eclipse makes the whole show garbage for me
>>156551505
Yeah, besides you had the rape/mindbreak to be surprised about. And Prototype had already outlined the Casca-type motivation for Guts where she was mutilated and dead as a doorknob. So her being alive is unexpected too.
Though I do take offense with how the Godhand weren't really omniscient-sounding, they just seemed like dicks (however one cool thing about
that part is that Slan says that Guts would make a good Godhand and we all know from the Qliphoth chapter that Slan is interested in Guts more so than the rest of the Godhand) .
>>156549545
There's a reason he has his Behelit.
>>156549545
>>156551881
Anyone else kind of disappointed that Guts didn't flip a shit when he saw the Count transform into his apostle form? I mean he saw him kill Pippin personally, so I'm sure it's personal. Yeah he was a bit sadistic towards the guy and made sure he suffered, but I still feel that was a general hatred he had for apostles when he should have had a special one for apostles he saw personally kill his comrades. Then again I guess you could argue his hatred for all apostles is equal, cause barring special cases like Zodd and the neo BotH they all participated in the feast.
>>156551881
I think the Behelit actually belongs to one of his companions. It's just using Guts because Guts would never take along a companion that mysteriously has a Behelit following them around. You know? Because "muh fate"?
Only way I could see Guts using it is if one of the Godhand defects and tries to convince him that he needs to become Godhand too. Like I'm pretty sure Slan hates the world Femto created.
>>156552058
Guts is an apostle racist. They all look the same to him.
>>156552066
Who that behelit really belongs to is I'm sure one of the things that keeps modern Berserk compelling still. We all want to know who will use it or attempt to use it.
>>156536373
>or is it one of those where you invest so much time in to it that you have to force yourself to see it through?
I have never, ever read something and had this feeling before. If you don't enjoy reading something, just stop reading it. Who gives a fuck where the story is going to go when the story is boring you?
>>156552058
I think that during the Eclipse Guts was so insane and angry that he didn't realize the details of what was going on around him. He probably didn't remember the Count (but maybe I'm wrong because I don't remember this scene well).
>>156537300

that being said. I used to consider Evangelion the best manga i had ever read, till i read gantz

and then i still considered berserk the best masterpiece i had ever read, till i read vinland saga
then i still considered berserk the greatest masterpiece i had ever read, till i read Code geass
then i still considered berserk the greatest masterpiece that has ever been read, till i read Golden kamui
then i still considered berserk the greatest masterpiece to ever have been read, till i read vinland saga
then i realized berserk is the greatest masterpiece to ever have been created and there will probably never ever be a manga that will reach those heights, a manga artist so brilliant that he borders on psychotic to ever grace this medium ever again. not even togashi got a sticky when he came back from hiatus. Kentaro Miura is without doubt the shakespeare of manga
>>156552066

What are you talking about? He didn't even use the behelit sword during the eclipse. It was his regular thorn sword.
You're remembering Void's wormholes. Lay off the doctor who

puck's homeland, elfhelm is invaded by Griffith's armies and is burnt to the ground and puck loses everything he's ever held dear. then he uses the behelit.
I just reread the boat/sea god arc and it isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I think the hiatuses really hurt it but If you read it in one go is ok.

>reading moon but you're not using 1/2x4chan
I think it's great stuff. Won't call it the GOAT but it has great characters, you really get to understand how tragic a character Guts is. I love the juxtapose between Guts and Griffith, I love how Guts got through all these emotions and changes, deals with PTSD and the trauma of everything.
I love how he tries to be hardcore and his friends won't let him anymore. It's just good stuff. I hope it has a happy ending but I doubt that

Dammit, anon, now that you mentioned that, I can't get it out of my head that I fucking want a Golden Age-tier SK/God Hand flashback. That'd be amazing and now I'm not sure if I can be satisfied with any less.

This. I'm honestly happy to see love for the series even though many shitpost about how it's gone downhill recently. But it really was something special.
It's clear Miura is either dead or in a coma and some intern with photoshop is trying to finish the manga.
Posting this because I fucking love these hilarious outtakes.

>He fucked up the world in Falcon of the Millennium, but that was not due to his sword.
Wrong. his Behelith Sword slicing Ganishka literally fucked up the world. also, he entered the Eclipse just with his horse and a shitty sword.

I'd say yes but I only started a last week, on volume 20 right now
>>156553255
Speaking of that. What the fuck is up with that horse? Did Bethesda make some horse berserker armor DLC for it? What if.
Just. Hear me out.
The horse IS Skull Knight?

I'm not implying I'm saying. Why have New York sushi when you can get the Tokyo shit?
do we know what color is Gut's Behelit?
Absolutely not worth reading. Nothing is good about it except the technical aspect of the art, which mainly consists of generic fantasy designs. Maybe if you really like violence you should read it, but it really does fucking suck.

it's like a greenish-blue, a dark turqoise

Berserk is not even that violent compared to other seinens

is there a colored picture of it or was animated in any of the adaptations? I always thought it was crimson.
>>156536373
dude yes, you might think its edgy shit at the start, but there is justification for all of it.
read that shit
>>156553649
Yes it is. Go any further and you get to manga that exists solely for torture and gore fetishists like me.
>>156553730
Crimson ones are Godhand ones specifically. That's why Zodd immediately poops his pants when he sees it.
i honestly think Guts is an interesting and dynamic character. He's pretty flat and dull in the first arc, but the ending kind of hints that while he certainly mistreats those around him he does so because he's haunted by serious trauma and misfortune. The flashback arc shows him growing up and its pretty clear he was abused as a child and this has really stunted his ability to empathize with others and leaves him in a very agressive state, angrily rejecting those who try to get close to him. The arc immediately after the flashback returns to the harsh and mean Guts of the first arc, but as it goes on we can see his actions begin to gnaw at him, and its clear that at the end of the dauy Guts is a good guy who cares for others, he's just been through so much terrible shit he's really wary of expressing his emotions and developing any connections with others. It's a really amazing and profound characterization of a tough and battered medieval warrior who has been through some seriously fucked up shit. I know he's a fictional character, but his stoicism really inspires me.
>>156553730
this is a really shitty file but theres a really good drawing of guts, puck, and the behelit that he made for this calendar
>>156553158
Yeah I'm fucking annoyed by the amount of redrawn panels. Like really what the fuck?
>>156553338
It probably shares SK's essence or something. The sound effects of SK pretty much confirm all he is is his armor at this point.
>all of these anons butthurt about how the manga is worse now with less edge since Guts actually developed from "muh Griffith revenge" and "muh rampage"
>all of these anons assblasted about the change to digital art
Cry harder.
The only thing that bugs me is that less compelling characters like Isma, Roderick, and Magnifico just joined Guts's crew out of nowhere.
>>156553624
>castles with muslim parapets
>catholic domes and basilicas
>victorian towers
>all in one castle
that and no one chargest heavy horse cav against heavy horse cav especially w/ mercs
>nothin personnel i just killed 130 men no biggie
its fun to read but fucking retarded
>>156555062
Isma showed her tits. She's earned her keep. She'll keep Isidro off of Schrieke too so there won't be a love triangle.
But yeah. Edge and pen illustration are pretty much staples. People should be rightfully upset. We're not reading a novel, we're reading a manga. Story isn't the only thing we're looking at.
>>156555125
None of what you listed is "fantasy". You literally named the origins and time periods in your post. Maybe bastardizations of medieval architecture. Caricatures and stereotypes, yes. Fantasy, no not really.
Fuck you Miura, retire already you fucker.
