How can you guys miss this?

Behind all that CGDCT stuff it shows Japan's demographic and even economic disaster in a village that used to have more people before the economic bubble that burst in 1989!
>>
>>156510912
This. It shows five students of different ages going to a broken down school with only one classroom and teacher. They live in a town with a population of less than 40. It's post apocalyptic done right without being edgy.

I think it's possible to construct a "mood" category which would include haibane and NNB, and a "structure" category which strictly enforces being post-apolocalyptic. Even then Kino no Tabi is hard to decide on.

Having similar mood feels like the more natural category.
>>
>>156514911
It might not be strictly SoL but it gives the same vibes and has a similar setting, so I'd say yes.

I wish there was a more defined genre of fiction with this setting because I really love it and it's hard to explain to people. The whole post-apocalyptic melancholy vibe where things are sort of fine even though they shouldn't be is absolutely amazing, especially paired with a semi-fantasy setting.

Something else that kind of fits the description is the Illusionary World scenes from Clannad.
>>
>>156515468

"These feel like (part of) a run-down world. Things are visibly old, decrepit, falling apart. But the people seem quite optimistic, or at least not miserable." That's the core idea anyway.

Did you know there's this thing called the internet? And on the internet there's this thing called google? And if you type a word you don't understand into it, it will tell you what that word means? You should get it a try sometime, instead of acting like some poor boo-hoo victim whose ignorance over basic terminology means we're somehow obligated to hold your hand and explain things to you.
>>
>>156529125
Google can't tell me what YOU use a word to mean, anon. We can't understand why we disagree if we can't explain what we each mean by a term.
>>
>>156529227
I use the word to mean the same thing everyone with a basic grasp of the English language uses it to mean. You seem to be the only one who has trouble understanding such a very simple term.

>>

>Why are you avoiding giving a definition this much, anon?
Because you asked a question that's too stupid to be worthy of a serious answer. It's like asking "What's the difference between tragedy and comedy?" Either you know, or you have an IQ of 50. There's no need to explain what "grimdark" means any more than there's a need to explain grass is green, and doing so is just humoring a willful retard.
>>
>>156529498
I'm not even the anon you were originally replying to.
>>
>>156527860
Nah, nothing grimdark about Haibane at all. From Reki's nihilistic/fatalistic personality surfacing along with Rakka's loss of innocence to the setting reeking of hypocritical stoicism that traded knowledge for "happiness".

The same hollow happiness that feels undeserved for people filled with guilt and poisoned by emptiness even though they supposedly have everything to be "happy".
>>
way to kill an interesting thread
>>
>>156529325
>>156529396
But more importantly, look at it like this. Anon says Haibane Renmei has a grimdark background tone (I'd mostly disagree with that, but whatever). Other anon says it's not grimdark at all. I give an example of a point where it's pretty fucking grimdark! Anon says "nuh uh, that doesn't count."

Suppose instead of asking for the definition, I gave another example (kind of tricky since I already used the best one, but imagine for now). Anon says AGAIN "no! not what grimdark means! you must be stupid!" The goalposts can continue moving forever.

>>156529498
There's no need to explain what google says grimdark means. But I don't want to know what google says, I want to know what you mean when you say "that doesn't count as grimdark." If you weren't allowed to say "grimdark" or "edgy" or any simple synonyms, what would the sentence look like? What would you say instead? Then we can actually address the question rather than just playing the "you're stupid for not already agreeing with me" game.

If what you'd mean is EXACTLY what google says, why don't you like the example? It is, in fact, excessively violent and unpleasant.

"Edge" isn't a solidly defined word though. Everyone uses it differently. It's pretty much a synonym for "thing I don't like". I wouldn't say any of the works mentioned in the thread are edgy at all. Anon was clearly asking how you define the word but you keep avoiding the question. You're making this conversation essentially really childish.
>>

>>156529546

>"Edge" isn't a solidly defined word though. Everyone uses it differently. It's pretty much a synonym for "thing I don't like".
1. We aren't talking about the word "edge", we're talking about the word "grimdark"
2. But that's wrong, it very clearly has a meaning, and inappropriately using it to just mean "thing I don't like" is just ignorant and betrays a lack of ability to properly interpret a work or express yourself about it
>>
>>156529902
>We're talking about the word "grimdark"

>it very clearly has a meaning
Even the thread cannot reach a consensus on what it means. Why won't you just define it so that you wouldn't come off as just an asshat avoiding the discussion? I really cannot understand something this simple.
>>
>>156530058
>Even the thread cannot reach a consensus on what it means
The thread does not need to reach a consensus, the word has a meaning regardless of whether one person chooses to willfully ignore it.

>anything remotely unpleasant is grimdark

There is nothing invisible about the definition, it is a word known to many and thirty seconds on the internet is all it takes to enlighten yourself. Is there an /trv/ manga where the author actually allow the MC to travel actual different culture and explore the other part of the world while trying to gather piece of information of the bigger plot?
I though YKK would promise something like that, but all she did was walking around Japan and her master's whereabouts went in-concluded.

It's post apocalyptic, but I wouldn't call it comfy/SoL. You barely do anything related to everyday life, and heavily focus on the current war effort.
Although I have yet to finish my game as 9S and then play as A2, so I'm not sure if that changes anything.

Final Fantasy: Brotherhood / Final Fantasy XV does this somewhat, though you'll want to actually play the game alongside watching the anime for the full experience. Game is more /comfy/ than the anime and has the more comfy catastrophe element (though it's still pretty intense at times, becomes less comfy and more outright depressing as the game goes on.)

Still, felt like it was worth mentioning.=, if you're looking for a vidya game that's like an anime and has an actual anime that has SOME elements of slice of decay.
>>
>>156546499
The comfy catastrophe parts are the first ~10 chapters. After that it's more your generic save-the-world plot, with the exception of a few scenes in the final chapter. And the end credits.
>>
>>156546499
I always found the contrast between Insomnia and the country side extremely jarring.

And adding to your comment, I think the anime is a must watch to understand scenes that otherwise would be weird (like Prompto getting depressed at the hotel or Iris being in love with Noctis). Movie, on the other hand, was okay and flashy but absolutely optional.

Not entirely related. Wanted to make a thread about this but I don't think my autism warrants one.
Vanilla 'comfy' sol is always either a neutered gag show, flaccid drama, lame romance, or moeblob series where the characters have been aged physically but not mentally. I'm talking about stuff like Sakura Quest, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon, Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari, Amanchu!, Flying Witch etc. etc. etc. every season has at least one.
If people just want to relax/escape from stress or whatever why not watch an actual gag anime? Do they have no sense of humor? Can anyone explain?
Sorry.

>>
>>156536630
I like the sense of finality and acceptance. That the age of striving and struggling is over and all that's left is a slow dignified decent into twilight. To me what makes it compelling is the contrast of such a huge event as the end of our world being told by focusing on just a handful of people and their most minor exploits. It's thematically satisfying, it feels as if I'm getting a private peak at the end of our story, something I of course will never live to witness. So there's a real sense of coming full circle, which for whatever reason I find very satisfying.

I love this genre, but one thing bothers me in YKK. Even if there was some huge disaster that remove a large mass of the population, humanity wouldn't just gradually decline and die out after, even in Japan with it's fucked birthrate, it would still thrive in small cities etc.

That thought is always at the back of my mind when reading which just makes it a little harder to believe, still my all time favourite manga though.

Also thanks to this thread I now have another handful of things to add to my backlog.

SSY isn't "comfy with dark moments." It's "very thin and not at all believable veil of normality over deep pit of suffering." The principal emotion when watching it is dread over what awful thing will be revealed next, or will happen next.

Since YYK has functioning sapient robots, it's likely they also have some sort of other automation that took care of peoples needs and allowed people to decentralize or something before whatever happened happened.

Kino is good, but it really isn't all that much about cultures, the various places she travels are more a backdrop for parables rather than an exploration of a real culture. It airs at midnight because that was the only timeslot that they could secure. After the first three episodes garnered quite a positive response, the head of Toho was already tweeting about getting it re-aired earlier in the day.

The fact of the matter is its existence was prompted by Netflix, they have to turn in episodes far earlier than they usually would because of Netflix, and because Netflix is its primary home, timeslot does no sway in terms of determining who its audience is.

All of Kino's Journey exemplifies a sort of wabi-sabi aesthetic. Even the philosophy behind it of "the world is not beautiful, therefore it is" echoes back to this notion of wabi-sabi.

That's a setting, not a genre. SnW and YKK have a similar setting and aesthetic, but they're totally different shows thematically.

I'm also surprised Turn A Gundam hasn't been mentioned yet. "Post-apocalyptic 19th century America + Syd Mead's moon robots" is the best aesthetic in anime.

I had the theory that whatever happened was atomic/nuclear based, and that it had repercutions on health, like radiation not allowing babies to come out normal, so people decided not to have kids anymore and accepted the slow and painfull fade of humanity.

Although we do see Maki and Takihiro having a kid, they lived somewhat far away from the cities, where radiation might be lower.

>Plese tell me something will happen
The things that "happen" are really subtle, character development is slow but very organic. Things will happen, but they will take a while, don't get desperate and soak up in the atmosphere that the developing phase is setting up.

Interesring thread, always liked this sort of setting of constant unease pared with optimism, cheerfulness, friendship and teamwork, havent seen many mention Gakkou Gurashi but it usually plays out more like suspense then SoL very clearly split from each other, but I really liked the few parts that felt like what is describe here, Ill definetly check out many of the mentioned manga here.

This reminds me, I always wanted to watch something like this

>post apocalypse world
>overgrown plants and wild animals inside the cities
>story follows the life of a young family, one man, his wife, and their daughter
>dad carriles a rifle/shotgun with him to hunt with
>mom cares for child
>both work to give her a happy childhood even if civilization is gone
>no tragedies happen, the three just live together as a happy family in a broken world

There's no visible disrepair (except the one scene in the school), no abandoned buildings, but the dimensions of the public infrastructure catch the eye. The school is the most obvious. Elementary school with capacity for more than 50, maybe 100 students, but only 4-5 students enrolled, with probably less than 50 inhabitants living in the entire village.

There are also the concrete structures in episode 3, probably water control or water storage control for the farms, that look far beyond what such a tiny village could afford to build. This village has seen much livelier times in the past. The kids are totally oblivious of it.

Sora No Woto and Kemono Friends were both decent anime but far from the greatness you make them out to be.

As for the genre, there are many I like more and the simplest example is serious catastrophe. But quite frankly there are almost no good serious catastrophe anything out there, even including western stuff. And the few good ones only border or slightly overlap this genre, like Simoun or Madoka.

Then when I look at what other people bring up here, like >>156508609 >>156508691 and >>156508874 it reeks of people who like to pretend 3deep5u. You can interpret anything you want however you want, that does not make something good, just boring shit when you are mentally past early high school level.

An action shounen.
With hints of smart plot twists thanks solely to Urubutcher storytelling that is unfortunately overshadowed by silly SHAFT gimmicks.

Now I get why you think YKK and Haibane are "boring shit", they lack action and sakuga twist. That's fine. I just wish you wouldn't project your "early high school level" tastes into other genres.

Not sure why anyone would says it's deep. There's a lot of things in it that you don't notice until subsequent re-readings, and there's a lot of things that are never fully explained, but that adds to the mystery of the world.

The key message of the manga is pretty clear though, about accepting how change is inevitable and only once you accept that can you be happy and make the most of the time you have and use it to make good memories and see and do things.

Best thing about YKK by far though is the mono no aware, the way it does those little doses of it, then all of a sudden you're swamped with a gigantic feeling of nostalgia, melancholy and notice your eyes have filled with tears as you can feel what the character is feeling just from looking is incredible. Pic very related.

No, were shows that tried new things and succeeded and became popular.

Personally didn't enjoy Madoka, but I can recognize it was a creative and there was lot of thought behind it, and was original too.

Kemono friends is just a kid show about animal girls that japanese started to like, flooded pixiv with fanart and started to invent crazy philosophical theories, that doesn't reflect in the anime at all, westerns just got into the van.
>>
>>156619642
The 1121st story is nicely wrapped up, but there's a lot of opportunities to explore that world without giving too much away.
>>
>>156623220
That's a good point with creating new things and succeeding with it.
But just because Kemono friends doesn't seem to be the same doesn't mean it's a meme and being meme made it as popular as it is.

> crazy philosophical theories, that doesn't reflect in the anime at all, westerns just got into the van.

That's an overstatement. While I'm not one hundred percent sure what theories you mean. I gotta say that some of them definitely make sense. Like the one with people fighting the ceruleans, or how park is abandoned or how episodes represent the development of humanity, or how kaban may be the Prometheus of her time.
These theories definitely make sense, some of them were confirmed by the author and some of them had their confirmation in anime. So I don't think that saying that they don't reflect in the anime, when some of them clearly do, is correct.

There's a reason why thread is called slice of decay. Not "post-apocalyptic settings are best"

The themes, tone, style and direction are all wrong, and you can't really separate the setting from the plot. With a lot of the not-really-SoL shows mentioned in this thread, you could remove the plot and still have pretty much the same characters in pretty much the same world. Sora no Woto is a prime example; the plot barely even happens until the last few episodes anyway. It's mostly comfy SoL stuff, and it would stand up just fine. There are edge cases, of course, but that's not one of them. To be a contender for an edge case I think you need at least two of SoL elements, post-apocalyptic or otherwise crumbling-to-ruin setting, and the hard-to-define mixture of melancholic/wistful and positive/hopeful tone.

Not only what you said, it's also hardly a cozy catastrophe in a drama show where people are constantly getting killed.

That's like saying it's only teenage wasteland.

Fellow SnWfags into /lit/ should read The Tartar Steppe.

I've tried so many times to finish Sora no Woto but its just awful, I can't bring myself to unpause an episode and finish it for good

Probably I'm having K-on PTSD. Never force yourself to watch utter pieces of shit to the end

I don't think it's a stretch. At least environment-wise it's a top tier series.

What? This would imply it's somehow "deep" or "complicated" series, when it's absolutely just atmosphere-driven. Do you have idea what you are actually talking about?

Does Haibane qualify?

There is more to it than settings to generate the same kind of feelings.
A good example this season is sukasuka.
>post apocalypse setting
>floating island ala laputa
>ruins surface world
>story take place in an orphanage with cute girls
>kind of like a saikano slice of life
Yet when you watch the show, there is nothing comfy there at all. Presentation is important as well.
