Scanlation thread.
What are you working on, /a/?
https://magazinewalker.jp/
Thoughts on this?
Seems to be quite a good deal if we could establish something like the goddess for it.
I can't moon so I might be misunderstanding it, but it's a monthly subscription of 500 yen for a bunch of monthly magazines. Lewds are also included, apparently.
Too bad it's Japanese domestic sale only so you'd need to pay for a trustworthy proxy as well.
>>156481457
Oh neat you can send requests too. I would definitely get this if they would add more magazines.
Why would you figure it needs a proxy though? Does bookwalker not accept foreign cards at all?
>>156482124
Proxy as in Japanese IP address.
They do not block foreign cards, as far as I know.
I'm usually using PayPal so no clue there.
>>156481457
You'd need a ripper that's pretty good at pretending to be a legit browser since bookwalker is very trigger happy when it comes to banning people for such things
What's the best way to get raws?
Currently I'm getting them from Amazon and using calibre to convert them.
But when I convert it compresses the images and when you zoom in you can see noise around the edges of the lines
Never tried scanlating before this week
There are a bunch of people from the Made in Abyss threads that started typesetting the daily translations
>>156483181
Amazon is probably the worst.
The easiest would be Rakuten/Kobo.
The highest quality still goes toward EBJ or BookWalker (but there's no public ripping method for that and screen capping is a pain).
>>156483181
Well, they can't really know what you're doing on the Desktop viewer.
>>156483335
>>156483100
Damn, second quote was meant for you.
>>156483335
Since the EBJ breaks every few weeks, because they make changes to their viewer - How do you rip stuff from rakuten?
>>156483457
Rakuten is basically Kobo.
Just download their book using the Desktop viewer and remove the DRM.https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/blob/master/Other_Tools/Kobo/obok.py
>>156481457
Wait, what? That's the same price some of those magazines' digital versions cost alone. They must not be getting as much business as they'd like.
>>156483543
Yeah, the majority costs even more.
That's why I'm unsure if I understood it correctly. But if I did, it's certainly a pretty damn good deal.
>>156483335
Rakuten is getting better, however it seems like certain publishers have a deal with EBJ/Bookwalker because Rakuten always gets shitty resolutions from Kodansha. I thought that maybe Rakuten was conserving space, but it looks like it's for specific publishers.
1024px on Rakuten, 1600+ on EBJ/BW.
>>156483528
Thank you, anon. That's a lot easier than I thought.
Ureshon when?
>>156481457
I think this is just them trying to compete with Amazon Unlimited. Are there even any good mags in that? That's probably bottom-of-the-barrel stuff that they're not selling much of otherwise.
I'm surprised none of groups picked up that yaoi manga from Gangan Joker
Did anyone crack ebj yet?
>>156483634
Well, it's just starting. They will probably listen to requests and add other magazines.
Noteworthy, I dunno? There's Dengeki Daioh (x2048) and Monthly Action (only x1200 even on BW) which gives at least Raildex shit and Tsugumomo/Maid Dragon.
Totally depends what you're working on. But I don't see anything amazing in there for now.
Still cheap, though.
>>156483585
Yeah, BW seems to have exclusive rights for a bunch of shit. Getting some things a month earlier than Rakuten for example.
>>156483793
Which manga?
>>156483335
Why is Amazon the worst?
>>156483965
Conserving space.
No matter which publisher you get, it will have artifacts everywhere.
>>156484002
Wait so they actually compress the images themselves?
So ebj and book walker are the last compressed?
If so I guess I'll have to find a way to get my stuff from there instead
>>156483963
Sorairo flutter
>Everyone talking about digital rips
Are paper scans a lost art?
>>156484066
I do not know if they do it themselves but they're definitely more compressed.
Yes, they have the least compression, probably due to the majority actually being from BookWalker.
You must have noticed this, but when you rip/get something from EBJ or Amazon it will almost always have a BookWalker page at the end.
I thought ebookjapan was pretty shit. I got hi score girl from there and there's artifacts fucking everywhere
>>156484083
I'm not surprised, it looks ugly and fat. Fujos don't like this sort of thing. Not even real BL either.
>>156484165
Depends on the publisher, right?
In my opinion, it's totally not worth it anymore when it comes to magazines.
As for tank scans, my first point comes into play.
Some release their tanks at over 2000px already and other still stick to 1200px.
So if you have a good scanner and a dedicated and good cleaner, it will definitely be superior.
>>156484175
pic related, download and zoom in on that shit
>>156484165
Depends. For manga that are (mostly) hand drawn I still prefer scans, because most ebooks are garbage. But I like ebooks for digitally drawn manga, because it saves me a lot of time when I don't have to stitch spread pages together/ redraw missing parts.
>>156484175
ebooks will always be meh on average, very rarely do you get a high-quality ebook release. EBJ just happens to stand atop that pile of shit.
>>156484165
If digital scans good then it's not worth it. Too bad many of them total low rez and low jpg quality garbage, further damaged by some retarded rippers who resave them into low quality jpg one again. Magazines wins with digital hands down.
>>156484352
Depends on the publisher.
Here's what it looks like on Rakuten.
I can't get it from BW or I would have to buy it since they don't offer proper previews.
In the end, it's probably shit everywhere.
>>156484551
Yeah I checked and they're both exactly the same
Fucking Big gangan
Square enix a shit
>>156483934
I do hope they add more stuff, all the magazines I want are well over 500 yen each so it would solve everything. Having more anime magazines like Animedia available for so cheap would be great too, those cost like 1000 yen and you usually just want them for 1 or two pages so it's not worth it.
Going to summit a bunch of requests.
>>156483365
Taking screenshots doesn't get rid of watermarks
>>156484733
There are none so far. At least I never saw any.
And the canvas ripping method on EBJ doesn't get rid of them either.
No clue if the proper method is available again to certain people, though.
>>156483585
Does that mean shit like Kadokawa owned magazines also get shit quality in Rakuten? Like Comptiq?
>>156483634
Dengeki Daioh, Dengeki Maoh, Shounene Ace, and Weekly Famitsu are definitely not bottom-of-the-barrel stuff.
>>156484799
I don't know, you can check the resolution yourself is Rakuten has a preview. Click on Inspect Element when you pull up the preview.
That reminds me
>tank digital scans in x1600
>suddenly next volumes in x1200 for the same price
Fuck those yellow jews.
>>156484799
They don't seem to have a preview for that so I can't check.
>>156484895
>>156484974
Damn, I guess I'll have to bite a bullet and buy something to see how it is. Most of the shit I rip is KC so it all comes from Kadokawa or Dengeki. While I have no problems with ripping from EBJ, it does get frustrating how often the ripper breaks, especially when it's around release time. I much prefer removing DRM like in the old bookwalker days.
>>156485221
Well, I do hope we return to those days at some point.
I hope this shit makes it more popular so people start writing on a tool and release it to the public, not like the currently existing one (if there is one).
https://global.bookwalker.jp/info-news_20170421/?bnr=hm_bw_notice_press-release_201704
>>156485239
>I wonder if the reason they release digital raws in such bad quality is so that paper copies still sell.
It's to prevent you from not buying the paper copy. Some magazines even have digital releases that specifically and only exclude their most popular series, just to fuck with you/make you buy the physical edition.
>>156485364
What mag does that?
Isn't that basically fraud?
>>156485239
They started increasing the resolutions. Slowly.
Desktop PC resolutions are getting bigger and bigger as well. I do think the next step will be from 2048 to 2560.
Also, some publishers delay their digital release for a month specifically so you get the paper copy.
>using lowercase for dialogue
Justify this
>>156485405
Not that anon but I saw a bunch of magazines with this notice, quite often. But I don't think it's completely removing manga.

Ebooks will always be shit for as long as people read manga on their cellphones.
>>156485239
>3000px master copy-tier pngs
Jokes on you, they would never bother to make b&w pages in png8 and rather would upload everything in png24 (and probably not compressed to boot) at which point they see traffic numbers in horror and immediately switch to low-quality jpg. You can see millennial scanlators do this shit on daily basis and never learn, and nips even worse with everything.
>>156485405
Weekly Shounen Magazine removes Hajime no Ippo, with the same kind of notification as is read above.
Start reporting before it starts, and it won't happen.
>>156486078
I hurts to see when another group takes your scans, rapes them with 20 filters, resizes them and then saves the result as jpg.
>>156486078
>12-16 color depth
It really depends on scan in question. I prefer to use 16 colors as lowest of the low if it doesn't damage gradient textures (and it has good compression as you turn it into 4bit png), 32 for standard (usually for converting/cleaning someone else's scanlation if textures weren't destroyed), and 64-256 for pic related.
>>156486078
>>156486211
I've read before that one of the reasons of using LQ jpg instead of optimized png on BW, other than being braindead, is that some online readers had trouble with them (I don't know if this is still true, but it was years ago).
>>156481096
> tfw I will never, EVER be fluent in Japanese
I don't get it. I study every single day. Which god do I have to sacrifice a virgin to?
There is no reason why I can't understand half of the shit I'm reading and screw up the meaning on the other half.
>>156486502
That's obviously not true. And most online readers convert any scan to low resolution LQ jpg (with their watermarks) automatically anyway, no matter what it was in original.
https://pastebin.com/AV5HdC00
Updated version of EBJhooker, too much of a bother to fix up my own shite script and this one works better anyway. It can rip automatically, read the instructions in it, it's pretty fool proof. Or so I'd like to believe.
Only works with latest-ish FF with greasemonkey.
>>156486584
How long have you been studying for? It might take a few years to sink in.
>>156486764
feb/2016
I just don't understand what the problem is. I'm about 2000 words into vocab, know all the radicals and have gone through several grammar guides but no matter how easy it looks at first, I trip all over the place when reading actual (easy) stuff like manga and visual novels because of jukugo I've never seen before, tricky sentence reading, mixing up kanji like 湿/温, etc.
>>156486732
Oh, thanks. So you can force the reader to go into single page mode rather than the two-page spread? Not sure how to do that.
>>156486957
Simply reduce the width of your browser.
>>156486999
The canvas size doesn't seem to be consistent, though. When I split a spread 50% with canvas size in Photoshop, it shaved off a few pixels of the other page. Not a big deal though.
>>156486732
Thank you.
>>156483528
How do you use this script?
sorry for the dumb question.
I got a preview from kobo and I wanted to test it out
>>156486944
Start translating manga for kids.
>>156487223
Some people find those more difficult to read because of the lack of kanji.
>>156487130
The issues I have are that I don't know where the desktop reader saves the ebooks to, and I don't know what exactly to do with the script now I've downloaded it
>>156487130
Previews don't have DRM.
But you simply install Python 2.7 and run the script in a command prompt:
python obok.py
>>156487296
You can run it from where you want, I have mine on the Desktop.
It finds everything it needs itself, simply try what I wrote up there.
>>156486944
give up
>>156486944
Should've done Anki
>>156487037
I did ~2.4k pages earlier this week with the PS method i describe in the script and it worked flawlessly. Make your browser window thin and tall enough and the reader will automatically switch to single page, spreads and shit included.
>>156487432
It sounds like all he's been doing is Anki and that's why he can't read actual Japanese.
>>156487485
>2000 words in a year
I don't think so, just the 6k deck only takes a few months to finish
>>156487417
Never. When 90% of the shit I consume during my free time comes originally in Japanese I can't stop until I'll someday be able to read it myself without external crutches like text hookers or OCR. I have no other goals in life.
>>156487432
I do Anki every day but don't limit myself to it.
>>156487482
I'm sure single page won't be a problem, just wondering what happened with the two-page rips. Whatever, thanks.
>>156485421
>using uppercase for dialogue
>characters are always shouting
>narrator is always shouting
Justify this.I can't type for shit.
>>156487648
You must've had a hard time reading any type of comic/manga in like, forever then.
There are ways to emphasize actual shouting.
Scanned volume 2 of Quickstart!, but I think the translation group for /tg/ is dead.
I can't vouch for the quality since it's my first time doing this, but I'd hate to see the effort put to waste.
https://mega.nz/#!lXpS1QgZ!DviNMeOO95CEBGuS_etGkLuRvQcQA-LgfmhFmsF5xr4
The chinks must be ripping ebooks like crazy if EBJ updaes once a month.
>>156487839
Thanks man. /tg/'s translator probably can't work on it anymore, but at least it's scanned.
>>156487824
It throws me off a bit sometimes, yeah.
>>156485221
Well now that I've tried it I guess the quality is good enough. I don't like that they downscale 2048px images down to 1600px but I guess I can't do anything about that. So long as it doesn't go lower I think I'll switch to rakuten.
>>156487854
Perhaps it's about time someone made a tool for the desktop viewer
>>156487554
It sounds like you simply don't understand the grammar, and have very limited problems when it comes to character reading. So, I say don't bother with trying to figure out the meaning of words. Study how words relate to each other. That is to say, study *only* particles and modifiers and how the particles and modifiers can affect the words to which they are relative - in concept, not in actual examples. You don't need to understand a single "word" in order to understand Japanese. It is a 'code', more than it is a 'language'; as such, you can understand it in a theoretical, 'mathematical' way, which should come before understanding the entirety of the language. What I mean by that looks like this:
>XからYZならばAをBCにDだ。
Once this type of comprehension is attained, the meaning of the 'coded' words can be attained - all manner of sentences can be understood, all at once. One sentence becomes not more difficult than another, but simply more complexly 'coded'.
Grammar is everything.

new problem it says convert book number...
but when I put in 1 it said it was invalid
Is there some kind of special numbering?
>>156489075
9000f MKII.
>>156489254
It's usually simply a number and enter.
I never encountered the invalid error.
Does it show the name of your book besides the number?
I'm not really sure anymore if you also need pycrypto. Just download the one for your version and try again.
http://www.voidspace.org.uk/python/modules.shtml#pycrypto
>>156489374
Ah, I think I'm just being dumb
I did "all" instead and it's saying it couldn't decrypt a book with any of the keys found
I forgot you said previews aren't encrypted
Still though is it possible to rip the preview pages?
I want to compare them to the amazon ones I have and see if there's any difference
>>156489505
Yes. It is. Simply giving it the number and an EPUB file should be generated.
Also, it does reqeuire pycrypto so make sure to install that.
Output example using High Score Girl 7 preview.
Just ignore the fucked up text since I don't have the locale set properly.
Otherwise, if you want to read previews, since they don't have DRM.
They're stored at:
USER\AppData\Local\Kobo\Kobo Desktop Edition\kepub
Simply add .zip to the end of one of these files and extract it.
Figured this'd be as good as any place to say this.

Amazon is on the right and kobo is on the left.
not much difference really but it looks as though the noise is slightly more visible on the kobo version (you can see if you compare the barely visible pixels)
Probably means that the images are being compressed when they're being converted
>>156491119
I see more noise on the amazon version.

To demonstrate.
>>156491207
>>156491314
Yeah. you'd be right there
I was mainly testing to see if there was a difference between the image quality purely based on the fact that I know calibre compresses the images somewhat when converting the amazon version.
But I guess your gif shows that compression doesn't have an affect really because they're completely identical
>>156491314
>>156491119
It's easier to use ImageMagick's compare for such things.
Using a cropped part of your image gives this.
There's nothing marked red so it's exactly the same, down to the very pixel. At least this one part I could check.
If you upload both images I can run it through it again.

Why not just send him a message?
Has anybody talked to Elemhunter in like the last month?
I'm still looking for some way to get a response from him. He hasn't responded to any of my messages - be they requests, offers to help, questions, solutions, whatever. If he's simply dead and gone, that would be nice to know; nobody has really breached the subject besides myself.
>>156504720
Me.
Did you use email? Try batoto.
>>156505143
I've almost *exclusively* used batoto. That's part of what is upsetting to me about it - I can see on the thing that he's been online since I've messaged him, dozens of times. The last time he responded to me (one YEAR ago) was that my messages were getting "buried" - not sure what that means, in the context - and that he only noticed the message at that time. I've sent him many messages since then, giving massive allowances for time, and gotten nothing.
There was even some guy in one of these threads who was supposed to contact him for my sake like a week ago, and he hasn't reappeared, either. I don't understand why exactly it's so difficult for two people to communicate in our world. And it's not like I'm being creepy and he's blocked me resultant of that or something; my messages are typically as innocuous as "hey, what's your progress on scanning ____? haven't heard anything in a while".
Knowing how to draw would make redrawing much faster, wouldn't it?
>>156502377
Like for many similar publications, the answer is that they're mostly geared for mobile users, so they try to find the lightest possible image size that still looks okay on a smartphone screen
>>156505344
Unless you're redrawing entire characters, redrawing and drawing are two separate skills, imho
You have to be able to inject absolutely zero of your own, your job isn't to draw, it's to make the slightest possible impact on the art that's already there
>>156505344
Oddly enough - from an observer's perspective, at least - it appears to make it slower. Actual artists will want to do everything in their power to make the redraw look flawless, and will spend totally unnecessary time and effort trying to mimic even the goddamn pen width or whatever of the original art. And then they get mad/annoyed if you want to release the work while it's still imperfect.

>>156505419
It's not an excuse, pretty sure all the manga they publish are done digitally. I'm pretty sure that if they compressed them using png8 and 16-32 bit depth they would achieve a top-notch quality for the same file size. The worst case scenario (lots of gradient) would add another 200ko.
Can we make scanlation requests here?
>>156506042
I will send boogymen after you if you do so.
>>156505701
>How do you keep yourself motivated after this shit starts feeling like work after a couple of years?
I call myself a hero, each and every day multiple times per day.
At the very least, several hundred people are directly influenced and changed by the work you do. You give them something to look forward to and something that makes them happy. And you are the only person in the world currently capable of doing that. You are a hero, and your work is the work of a hero. That is how you motivate yourself. If you are so distant from motivation that even this logic does not impact you, then you simply need rest - so take it. It is always said, after all: "Even heroes need rest."
>>156506143
I feel the same. You are a hero anon.

How do you rip from the Viz reader? Viz already has 30 chapters of Astra lost in space, yet Madokami only has 27.

200kb on every page is two extra mb on every chapter, which adds up very quickly for the kind of customer that would buy such a subscription
Besides, no one's going to care.
Even on PC it doesn't look THAT bad, and with the majority of customers looking them up on screens too small to see the difference it'd just be a waste of effort and filesize on their part.

It's absurdly entertaining, and I get to see all the confidential police documents on crimes and whatnot because I'm there to be a mediator.
When I'm home, I produce scripts, get percentages from the translators working for me, and get money for commissions.
As far as making a living wage and beyond goes, I've got it pretty good, I'd say.

Actually, I don't see anything in the obok plugin that would make it compress images because all it does is decrypt and save files as-is, either it's calibre doing it or this is the best quality you will get
There's a Korean or Chinese translation for like every other doujin. Do you think one of the groups would give me their PSDs or something to use for my own translation if I ask them?

No, subhuman chinks never share.
>>156512636

I personally know a handful of Gook/Chink scanlators and they are big on sharing. Like if you have something to offer them, they will gladly give you raws.
For example, there is only a gook version of this doujin.

Though honestly, they are not the best scanners.

(Actually, now I'm thinking that a textless version in png format shouldn't be too much to ask for... I'll probably just do that instead.)
On that subject, what happened to the chinks scanning comic Kou, LO, Shingeki, etc?
>>156514184
Text-less png files would be a pain in the ass to work with.
I'm always toggling between the clean layer and the backup layer to see if the font changes, what the original text or sfx looked liked, to check the TL itself, etc.

Go to mikocon.com and ask. People may have called them cunts for because they kept scans hostage and charged for access but now that their scanner is gone we have entered an era of shitty digital raws. So much for the "don't worry someone else is going to scan these anyway" mentality.

They all do completely lossless compression.
For example if you do black and white pages, the majority of the anons here saves them indexed, 32 or less colors, and PNG8.
Indexed IS lossy, but not visible to the human eye.
Honestly, I just run them through the program I linked you and they're small enough in the end.

I'm a beginner at Japanese. Is translating doujinshi a good way to improve? It might take me a while but I would be looking up each individual kanji and trying to make sense of it.
>>156519252
Try this http://www30.zippyshare.com/v/gacIcgu4/file.html
>full colored ones
>png
Don't be a retard and use jpg (at maximum quality if you want, it's still will be smaller than png while compression will be non-noticeable most of the time).
>>156527319
Why not start with manga with furigana? Doujins are likely to have awkward or unique phrasings depending on what you're reading, plus you're dependent on stuff like KanjiTomo to read and lookup the kanji which fails often unless you redraw.
>>156527319
Reading a lot is a better way to improve your Japanese.
>>156527319
You're probably better off just reading.
A decent translation requires you to think more about the nuance/phrasing involved, to say nothing of any editing you may do yourself.
Also, if you mean doujin ero-manga, you're going to be reading a lot of "あっ、いくぅ", which can only do so much to actually improve your reading.
>>156506831
>every
Not every page is filled with 4 gradients. Even then, they should just release x1600 but with better quality, anyway. Because, releasing x2126 pages with fucked up patterns, crushed highlight and shadow details is meaningless.

1600px is shit for anyone with a decent monitor.
Unless you're trying to say what the best thing to do would be with a bad situation.
>>156527883

>>156528026
anything above 1600 is too big because you have to scroll loads just to read a page
>>156528253
Stop having a small monitor. If you're poor just set your monitor to portrait. Or hell, rotate the manga page and physically turn your monitor on its side.

You either die a shitposter or live long enough to see yourself become the memer.

"sounding like what people actually say" is kind of off, see >>156535804 . People expect a certain degree of perfect precision and l'esprit de l'escalier, and things without it sound like they have Tomino autism.
That said, it's so subconscious a preference that even just running your script text-to-speech helps; you'll THINK you're refining it to be more natural but succeed at actually refining it more dramatic.
If you're only working on one series it also helps to find a few well-received OEL equivalents and binge those.
>>156535944
That's dumb.
What would a loli imouto know about grammar.
>>156536666
>not teaching your loli imouto enough grammar to correct your incest mangos

Yes, nobody in their right mind would ever say "my hips are moving on their own", but it still flows like an sentence someone might construct in the english languge, whereas something like "the motion in my hips is not of my own volition" doesn't even have that going for it.

>>156515631
Blame.
>>156539994
>the motion in my hips is not of my own volition
This makes it sound terrifying.
>>156539994
>Though I've no mind for groovin', can't stop my hips movin'
Well, I was going to be working on some Dowman seiman stuff, but the translator who recruited me never emailed back.
>>156486944
Take a class.
>>156541245
>Dowman
Nice, what stuff specifically?
>>156541353
Paraizo

I guess for providing a digitally ripped raw or something?
EBJ ripping usually leaves alpha channels and all which bloats the file size.
Does anyone need an editor? I've been out for a long while, now I'm bored and have free time.
>>156542203
Are you any good?
Have a handful of sfw doujin that could use typesetting.
>>156542405
Typesetting is a weak point, as I've been out since that was its own role. I'd like to work back in as a writer first and learn other skills as I go.
>You can't just drop [series] you owe the community to continue it after doing all those previous chapters!
>>156543018
one time I went "fine but i'm still not doing that chapter"
every one previous, every one subsequent, but still haven't touched it
people in the occasional generals on here are STILL mad, and it warms my icy black heart every time i see it.
>>156543113
Which chapter of what series?
>>156543113
What series?
>>156543231
>>156543428
technically an episodeKaiji 2 14
>>156543527
Oh. I never read that series. I've heard good things about it, though.
>>156543562
It's real good, I've been reading through it. I'm on part 4 right now, and part 5 is the currently ongoing one.
>>156543527
Was 14 a recap or something? It's been a while since I've seen it.
Also, were you with Nutbladder? I noticed they have no ep 14
Any interesting looking monthly series that have started up recently with raws available in need of translation?
