I agree. Everyone kinda wishes for more when they love a series, but for the love of it I have to hope for a normal lenght because anything else will always eventually turn to shit. At best it will stay okay but completely switch in tone and style and that's something I hate.
Better a short and compact story, authors can always add a few extra chapters later or something.

Well there are exceptions. And we know that Dorohedoro won't run that long anymore. Most other authors aren't capable of retaining a proper pace and story progress once they are over ~20 volumes and everything stagnates - unless the series gets some sudden genre switch, tons of new useless characters and new powers never hinted before because the mangaka has lost his track and doesn't even know what to do with his own series anymore.

whether or not it works... the translation effort didn't make it quite clear. the umbra hands may not count as people enough, much less "people he was willing to give up everything for", for the whistle to actually work on the gate; they're all disposable-if-specifically-selected, after all. the white whistle [Praying Hands] may work to activate some relic even then, but... if his whistle doesn't properly work it'd explain why he was trying to talk riko into letting him kill her and make a whistle out of her.
the mass of greed that used to be bondrude doesn't really understand these pesky "emotion" things that the abyss seems to enjoy manipulating. it figured out the need for them when turning mitty into a rug and nanachi into a fluffthing, but just how they work is another story.

What makes him so compelling is how undivided his faith is in his complex philosophy that justifications of any kind are rendered entirely moot in the face of the genuine higher cause to which he's committed, one that calls into question the exact definition of insanity under the extremely unique circumstances in which delvers of the abyss have submerged themselves.
