Even in Taiwan, Southern Min, the language used in the puppet shows are looked down down. This was especially true when the Nationalists lead by Chiag Kai Shek came to the island. But in general South Chinese languages especially Min is generally not a prestige language across the Sinosphere (and that includes the pockets in America).

Which is really dumb in a sense, since Mandarin is the butchered creole made because northern barbarian horsefuckers can't speak right. Whereas other dialects preserve ending consonants and tones from Middle Chinese and Old Chinese lost in Mandarin. In fact there are poems from the Spring and Autumn Period that fail to rhyme in Mandarin but still rhyme in dialects like Cantonese and Hokkien.

It makes sense if you study pinyin. The sounds in Mandarin don't completely match those in Western languages so they had to appropriate some of the less commonly used letters at the end of the alphabet to represent those sounds. So "x" is a sibilant sound similar to "sh" but not interchangeable with it. Likewise with "q" and "ch", "zh" and "j". The marks on top of the vowels indicate the tones, of which there are four in Mandarin.

That would be the case for any language that is totally unfamiliar to you. If you don't know Japanese, then the sounds would run together and you wouldn't be able to tell word boundaries there either.

This was a really good show but it's too damn hard to convince most people to watch it because it's puppets. It's a real shame considering how much craftsmanship and work is put into the series. This was my first exposure to the PILI ouvre so it's a bit gushing but there wasn't much about the production side that I don't find amazing.
