Pre-2000 anime thread. What are you watching, /a/?
>>
Some based dude started subbing the OG Chibi Maruko-chan, including Yuasa's movie. Also watching Ashita no Joe 2, bummer that they repeated the fasting thing again, hope the next story arc is better.
>>
watched hunter x hunter 1999 recently. do t know if that really counts as pre-2000 seeing as most of it was made in the 2000s. but it was fairly enjoyable anyways. probably gonna start outlaw star soon.
>>
I was watching Turn A Gundam, but only had the first 25 episodes downloaded, and my SD card broke so don't have space to download the rest (I watch anime on my phone), so been stuck at episode 25 for a while. Considering streaming the rest, just so I can keep watching, because I was really enjoying it. Too bad I'll only be able to watch at home if I stream, can't watch during my commute.
I think the visuals are great, but the main robot may have a bit too much detail, it looks awkward. Interesting plot and world, and a good mix of many different things like comedy, tension and relaxing.
>>
>>156444726

>Chibi Maruko-chan

Didn't know about that, cool.

Also, Animebytes' "ISO-only" better.php section has a lot of older shows that probably aren't subbed. If anyone wants to make encodes of those, that'd be cool. I don't think raws exist anywhere else that's readily available to be subbed.

I wish I could just recommend you watch the 1980 version, but a lot of it relies on having seen the 1970 one too. It's a classic though, so worth a look sooner or later. If you like Dezaki you'll like 2.

Is Doki Doki Densetsu worth watching?
>>
>>156447157
Discotek is supposedly subbing the whole thing to put on CR because they don't think it would sell enough DVDs, I don't know their schedule but they are up to 45.
>>
>>156447605

I suppose no one's ripping the episodes. I only saw the first 12 episodes by chance because someone made a thread for it. I think the Nyaa upload is hidden, too. The dialogue is pretty simple, but subs rips would still be nice.

Getting ready to watch several shows I just realized had been subbed recently, hadn't been keeping track for awhile but apparently some group that came out of nowhere called Subdiver has done all of Ganbaruger, Gosaurer, Raijin-oh, Dagwon, Musashi Lord and Webdiver (50+ eps each) in like the past 2 years which blew my mind because NOBODY subs that fast for that long. Then I heard Exkaiser has been subbed by Silver Castle and they even finished Goldran that Sasword had been dragging his feet on for almost a decade. Not expecting great quality TL but I am hyped.

Yeah recently watched Ashita no Joe(S1), Ace wo Nerae and Lunpin the third(1971).
I am more of a "new" anime fan and really started to watch anime seriously around 2010.
So the majority of the anime I watched are post 2010 or from the mid 2000s.

I am currently planning to watch at least a show from every season from 1970 up to 2010.

I always saw trailers for Knights of Ramune (the OVA US Manga Corps brought over, not the TV shows). I recently found a dvd copy of it and holy fuck is it awful. It wasn't the fun fanservice-y adventure the trailer made it out to be. It was just boring mecha battles interspersed with really bad fanservice, strung together by a nonsensical time travel plot.

I'm assuming the TV show wasn't nearly as bad, so the OVA, being the last entry, must just be taking a massive shit on its legacy.

>>156453632

>>
>>156454913
It definitely gets better past season 1. For some reason the formula of a lot of s1 episodes is
>the passes get stolen, have to get them back
or
>some woman wants to kidnap tetsuro and live with him forever

They change up the formula in season two and it becomes more about tetsuro helping people on the planet

No, it doesn't. You know why? Because it doesn't move. Anybody can draw a high-detail still panning shot. I like my animation to actually be animated. And if you judge Lodoss War by its animation and not its high-detail character designs, then it utterly fails in comparison to most shows new and old.

I'm sure this doesn't meet whatever the hell your criteria is, and if it did then you'd just move the goalposts.

Animation isn't all that matters when it comes to the aesthetics of a show. The color balancing in that webm alone makes it better than most pastel colored modern anime, and the highly detailed characters in the webm puts it above a lot of shows seeing as anime generally is so lacking in movement in the first place.

That's the compromise you make when you pick between designs that look great and have lots of detail but take ages to draw, and lower detail streamlined designs that are easy to animate.

Actually, that old post is me, not that other anon.I'm surprised you dug through the archives to find that and it's hilarious that you're so paranoid that you looked for a months-old post as proof of samefagging just because both of us used an extremely common idiom months apart. Heck yeah I want to talk about old anime. Its comfy as fuck.

I havent seen a ton of pre-2000 anime but I'm working my way through it. I have a ton that I really want to watch but I find it takes so much longer since they are more often 50+ episodes.

Speaking of which does anyone know why that is? It feels like in todays age they churn out a ton of 12 episode shit to see what sticks. But anime back then was way more thought out and planned to be at LEAST 24 episodes. So many series I want to watch are 50+ or 100+ episodes

Watching Turn A Gundam and the original Dragonball. Turn A is getting great but felt weird to me considering my introduction to Gundam was 0079 since there was no Zeon or Federation but I do love the cozy Ghibli esque vibes the village has. EG's 1080p BD release is spectacular.

Also watching the original Dragonball, it's starting to get a little more engaging and less slow paces. Pilaf arc was shit, tournament arc got better towards the end and when Goku fought Roshi but the Muscle Tower arc was pretty fun if not a little repetitive.

And I only have enough space left for Heidi, Girl of the Alps or Ranma 1/2, which one do I get?

The first episode where he just runs in and murders everyone was so surprising. I was expecting the episodes to build up to him defeating his mothers killer but lol no. Just runs in their and fucks their shit up

Good call, some of the scenes would look magnificent in BD quality especially the opening

That was an anime? I fondly recall playing the PSP port of the game back in the day and enjoying it quite a lot.

>Harlock and Emeraldas are generally seen as the two most "DONT MESS WITH THESE TWO" characters in early leijiverse, Maetel/Tetsuro seemingly benign in comparison

>Maetel once genocided two planets because they just rubbed her the wrong way

>Tetsuro once beat a woman to death with a FUCKING CHAIR

The pirate duo don't got shit on these two who just go around planet to planet fucking peoples shit.

The OnDeed DVD release is exceptional too.

Have you even seen the show?

Regardless don't watch the movie first, it spoils the shows ending.
>>
>>156461578
BD quality is dogshit because Toei ran it through FORS or whatever shitty pack of filters / upscalers instead of springing for a new telecine. Even the DVDs have waaay better quality.
>>
>>156461803

Toei releases nothing but shitty DVDs and BDs, who people even continue to buy their products is beyond me.

Shitty jokes aside, I am really enjoying it! I don't care for cars, and haven't gotten my license yet (20 yo), but despite the terrible CGI, it's so fun to watch.

The racing is fast, with good music and pacing, it's very well done and the ridiculous techniques they use are even better.

The characters all feel like real, dumb, goofy teens, who take racing way too seriously, like you would at that age.

Thanks to that the slice of life moments are almost as enjoyable as the races themselves.

The main series of 15 novels ended long ago. The rest of the books are just short stories. The last short story by Kanzaka came out in the 25th anniversary anthology that was released in 2015.

Name an antagonist edgier and more hardcore than Shishio
