Pre-2000 anime thread. What are you watching, /a/?
Some based dude started subbing the OG Chibi Maruko-chan, including Yuasa's movie. Also watching Ashita no Joe 2, bummer that they repeated the fasting thing again, hope the next story arc is better.
watched hunter x hunter 1999 recently. do t know if that really counts as pre-2000 seeing as most of it was made in the 2000s. but it was fairly enjoyable anyways. probably gonna start outlaw star soon.
I was watching Turn A Gundam, but only had the first 25 episodes downloaded, and my SD card broke so don't have space to download the rest (I watch anime on my phone), so been stuck at episode 25 for a while. Considering streaming the rest, just so I can keep watching, because I was really enjoying it. Too bad I'll only be able to watch at home if I stream, can't watch during my commute.
I think the visuals are great, but the main robot may have a bit too much detail, it looks awkward. Interesting plot and world, and a good mix of many different things like comedy, tension and relaxing.
Didn't know about that, cool.
Also, Animebytes' "ISO-only" better.php section has a lot of older shows that probably aren't subbed. If anyone wants to make encodes of those, that'd be cool. I don't think raws exist anywhere else that's readily available to be subbed.
I wish I could just recommend you watch the 1980 version, but a lot of it relies on having seen the 1970 one too. It's a classic though, so worth a look sooner or later. If you like Dezaki you'll like 2.
Last episode of Machiko sensei, then I'm going to pop in some old slayers, tenchi muyo, and maybe tiger mask vhs tapes.
Mahoujin GuruGuru. I'm re-watching the classic while I wait for the remake. I also just finished Akazukin ChaCha, instant favorite.
I suppose no one's ripping the episodes. I only saw the first 12 episodes by chance because someone made a thread for it. I think the Nyaa upload is hidden, too. The dialogue is pretty simple, but subs rips would still be nice.
Ai shite Knight has one of the best first episodes.
What are some mahou shoujo shows on the shorter side from the 80s?
Are they ever going to approve this damn torrent? I already have it downloaded, but still.
>Full subs of Mama wa Shougaku 4nensei out for months
>Nobody's ripped them
>Some based dude started subbing the OG Chibi Maruko-chan
wait wait WHAT!
It's really boring sometimes, and not as interesting and fun to watch as the classic. Unless you are like me and really love a particular character, I don't think its worth watching.
Getting ready to watch several shows I just realized had been subbed recently, hadn't been keeping track for awhile but apparently some group that came out of nowhere called Subdiver has done all of Ganbaruger, Gosaurer, Raijin-oh, Dagwon, Musashi Lord and Webdiver (50+ eps each) in like the past 2 years which blew my mind because NOBODY subs that fast for that long. Then I heard Exkaiser has been subbed by Silver Castle and they even finished Goldran that Sasword had been dragging his feet on for almost a decade. Not expecting great quality TL but I am hyped.
Just downloaded all seasons of City Hunter. Been putting it off for years, but I'm finally getting around to watching it.
Trigun and Sailor Moon. I'm not really into modern anime outside of Overlord.
Watching the shows that made me happy as a child will make me happy as an adult, right?]/spoiler]
I watched The Chocolate Panic Picture Show recently and it's a unique experience. Mostly surprised to find out that it's part of Gainax's history. Also watching Gundam 0083 which is enjoyable, both due to nice animation and the cast being more likable than the average Gundam cast.
Currently watching You're Under Arrest! and my 3rd Rewatch of the Patlabor franchise while drunk
>DVD I have on the left
>DL from BakaBT on the right
When was a cleaned up version of RK released?
Slowly making my way through Maison Ikkoku. I'm on episode 14. I feel like if I went too fast with this, I'd end up chucking my computer out the window due to rage over the constant misunderstandings. And I'm more and more convinced that Godai's neighbors are the worst people on the planet.
Here's what I'm watching, I fucking hate Ataru. He's a stupid motherfucker
Maison Ikkoku. Seems like It's Rumiko's best work
>tfw when you reach an age where pre-2000s anime has become its own niche genre
Just fucking end me.
Not only that, outside of what was airing that season there was very few threads about post-2000 anime except the really big hits not all that long ago.
90s anime took up most of the out of season discussion on /a/.
70s anime is underrated as shit. I mean its definite its own vibe and not at all like what anime became in the 80s but thats part of its charm.
Also they had the best OPs and EDs.
Yeah recently watched Ashita no Joe(S1), Ace wo Nerae and Lunpin the third(1971).
I am more of a "new" anime fan and really started to watch anime seriously around 2010.
So the majority of the anime I watched are post 2010 or from the mid 2000s.
I am currently planning to watch at least a show from every season from 1970 up to 2010.
It does for me. Most modern shows just don't have the same amount of heart.
finally got around to watching kimagure orange road
literally maison ikkoku except 2 girls instead of 2 guys
Dayum, looks like everyone's watching this.
>Now and Then, Here and There
Can somebody explain why this show is liked? I get the appeal of dark shows, but it seems pointless to just have an entire show filled with unabashed suffering and no eventual payoff for any of it.
Currently making my way through.
>Aura Battler Dunbine
>Kimagure Orange Road
>Dirty Pair TV
>Cyber City Oedo 808
Recently put Cardcaptor Sakura and Captain Harlock on hold, and want to go back and finish Patlabor TV and Mellowlink soon.
Votoms is fucking great. Good MC. Had some combat autism tho. His autism allowed him to play his "i was pretending to be retarded" scheme to the very end with the main badguy.
Watching Metal Idol and one would think with the dub singing being so good the actual dub would be something of note.
>California Crisis will never have a good release
>we'll always have this VHS-tier shit
Gentlemen, how do we meme a BD into existence? We have to win Japan over for OVAs that they never watched.
It looks like the only release is the LD rip, but a DVD was released as well. Has anyone made an encode from the DVD, or know what the quality is like?
>all that weird shit from the time that Americans and Brits brought to the west
>nobody snagged California Crisis
The IP must have been sent into Limbo before the 90s, wonder what happened
VOTOMS is my favourite mech series by far
seen Mellowlink? too fucking rad. You're right about the autism though, I think it's necessary to be a perfect soldier
If the rest are as good as the main TV series then it will be well worth it.
Some residual 80s aesthetic lasted up until the second half of the decade, in general Japan is about 5 years behind the rest the west culturally.
All the OPs and EDs are great, that OP was what inspired me to pick up the show.
Your best bet would be to spam letters to the important guys on this list and see if it's possible. Maybe start an online petition thing. You'll have to go full autismo but it's what you gotta do:
I think Studio Unicorn is long dead.
I'm watching galaxy express right now , finished episode 88.
Anyone have favorite episodes from the series? So far mine have been "the saintly women who devours souls," the one about the planet that has firefly like people who glow, and the episode with the gas that turns planets to stone.
>donkonjou gaeru will never have subs
>gamba will never have subs
I always saw trailers for Knights of Ramune (the OVA US Manga Corps brought over, not the TV shows). I recently found a dvd copy of it and holy fuck is it awful. It wasn't the fun fanservice-y adventure the trailer made it out to be. It was just boring mecha battles interspersed with really bad fanservice, strung together by a nonsensical time travel plot.
I'm assuming the TV show wasn't nearly as bad, so the OVA, being the last entry, must just be taking a massive shit on its legacy.
It definitely gets better past season 1. For some reason the formula of a lot of s1 episodes is
>the passes get stolen, have to get them back
>some woman wants to kidnap tetsuro and live with him forever
They change up the formula in season two and it becomes more about tetsuro helping people on the planet
Slowly making my way through CCS.
Season 2 is pretty balls, though.
That's currently what I'm watching. Except I'm going reeaaallly slowly through it. I wish I'd watch it more frequently than I do.
Watching Rose of Versailles for the first time, really enjoying it. I want to be princess-carried by Oscar, and I'm a dude
I wish Burn-up excess has this kind of character design.
anyone know some other cute detective/police girls doing action stuff?
Robot Carnival BD fucking never.
Patlabor, Dirty Pair, Dominion Tank Police
The only time I had real trouble with VOTOMS was when they were all fighting in the same mecha with the same color schemes. It was realistic (versus having the "hero" mecha in bright colors), but at the same time, I couldn't figure out who was doing what.
prepare for the best girl wars between Natsumi and Miyuki
I wanted to see more out of curiosity, actually. But it wasn´t that bad... Okay, sure, a epilogue would be nice. I wanted to know more about Lalaru, after all.
Nah, I don´t really care about popular ones... I just heard good things about it.
Patlabor (Early Days OVA) and Gunsmith Cats. The latter's opening titles are super kickass.
Don't listen to this faggot who doesn't know what he's talking about. Lain has aged like milk with it's boring ass characters and it's plot which has been told countless times with other shows and movies. It's not good and anyone who likes it is bias because of nostalgia.
Switching on and off working my way through 0079 and Macross 7
I finished SDF Macross a month or so ago
Shit was good
This made me realize that almost all of the pre-2000s stuff I've seen is mecha only.
Just started watching Record of Lodoss War, for some cel animated goodness.
So many OPs I was looking for are just completely gone from youtube.
Maison Ikkoku has one hell of a soundtrack. Sets the tone beautifully.
Mariko is best girl.
>one of my favorite scenes is when she tries to cut a bitch
I seriously want every mahou shoujo ever to be translated.
Who here watched Space Warrior Baldios?
There was something about that small 1979-1981 period for mecha. Had some really dark and depressing shows/films complete with downer endings and no hope at all.
"animated' might be a strong word to use with Record of Lodoss War.
It's from 2000, but I'm counting it because it's so underrated.
also just waiting for pic related in the mail
It is, but you get like two decently animated scenes after that.
How much do you think it would cost someone to commission someone to translate a show? I expect it to be insanely expensive but I want to know.
My guess without doing any research would be $200 per episode
>there are people who genuinely believe this
If you want well-drawn image that aren't actually animated, you could always just go read a manga.
I recently watched Bubblegum Crises(the anime, not the OVAs) for the first time. It was pretty fucking enjoyable, seems kinda like the opposite of Eva.
Should've read the title, it's Record of Lodoss War, not Record of Lodoss Dungeoneering, or Lodoss Adventuring.
I know I'm going to be destroyed for this but Reddit has a translation board where people translate stuff for free. Obviously you wouldn't have full episodes or fansubber I guess but maybe if you make an offer there you could find someone
personally all of the post processing they flood alot of newer anime with makes it vomit inducing, I prefer my poorly drawn robot stills over narration to bloom out the ass everywhere
>watching 2040 first
That's a very odd decision, even if 2040 has better
>hating based Gourry
You just jelly he gets Lina.
The character designs were 70s as fuck.
Good. I've been pimping Tylor for years. Seriously underrated.
The climax is one of the best in the history of anime.
No problem anon. I dont browse reddit myself but I do understand it is (unfortunately) useful for some things. I think mostly since it has so many users and an active community.
Thanks for the advice! Ideally Id like to find a translator who is also a fan of the series and maybe would do a discount for a project they already wanted to work on. Getting paid would just be an added bonus for them
It was okay, I guess.
It just fucking ends,
though. I assume Space Mind used the last of its power to rescue the pair, or it was a magic one-use device that activated in their time of need.
Depends on who you hire, if it's a friend or some poorfag college student who just happens to be half-Japanese or something then you could do it on the cheap. If it's an ESL or ETL guy from some god forsaken place then maybe $50 an episode. Proper TL guy with any self respect $100+. I think Nanto from TSHS commissions all his translations with spare cash from selling plasma.
Hadnt heard of this but added to my plan to watch. Looks cute as fuck
You could easily argue that 2040 had a better story by nature of it having an overarching story. You could have argued that the characters were better developed. You could have argued that the mechanical designs were better.
But no. You went to the heresy of insulting based Sonoda and delicious 80s poof.
You should go fuck yourself right off back to Gaia.
That looks pretty interesting, picked up.
Underrated retro anime are the best, it's fun to go into a series without any information other than a synopsis. The last time I did that I was with Gasaraki, and now it's one of my favorite mecha shows.
Get your head out of your ass. There are plenty of excellently animated retro anime, Lodoss just isn't one of them.
Sounds about what I expected then.
I wouldnt want to organize it because I hate organizing large things like this. But it would be interesting to see people start a group funding for translating series that they wanted to see. I could possibly see Osomatsu-kun getting a ton of fujo bucks with its current popularity
I'm watching Argento Soma, I'm nine episodes in.
So far the main problem is that it's meandering like crazy, they've repeated the same episodic plot like five times now and nothing has really happened.
No, it doesn't. You know why? Because it doesn't move. Anybody can draw a high-detail still panning shot. I like my animation to actually be animated. And if you judge Lodoss War by its animation and not its high-detail character designs, then it utterly fails in comparison to most shows new and old.
I'm sure this doesn't meet whatever the hell your criteria is, and if it did then you'd just move the goalposts.
>I couldn't find a torrent of the original anywhere
Do people not use Nyaa or something? I typed Bubblegum Crisis into the search and the first result is a big compilation of the OVAs and TV series with 15 seeds.
Shit taste /v/. Let me guess, the original is "moeshit" and 2040 is better because it reminds you of generic 90s shit on muh Toonami
I still enjoyed Lodoss. Granted I saw it long before what we'd called "modern anime" times.
Back when Lodoss itself was still pretty modern anime.
But yeah, its animation tended to have great scenes like this, then a bunch of still pans.
But even some of their budget-saving animated bits don't look THAT bad.
It doesn't move very often, but when it does it's pretty beautiful.
I don't believe so. There was an on-going project on Baka to sub them all and add them to the list as they go. They've got 25 of the 38 total episodes, but haven't added any in over a year, so the project may have petered out.
Nah, I just don't like Sonoda's character designs. Difficult concept to understand, I know.
Damn, I was just trying to post that.
I'll just say that I've come to really like the OVA's OP and ED
1 episode left of this for me to watch, but if i watch it, its over
It's kind of funny how all of the mage vs mage duels in the final battle of the Shooting Star arc in the TV series are decided by said mages giving up and trying to stab each other.
But the well-animated parts are almost all in the first couple episodes. I would be okay with stuff like >>156456965 if it was mixed in with better quality scenes, but the entire second half of the show looks like that.
It just felt like the animators stopped trying, which is a shame since the art design is so good.
Animation isn't all that matters when it comes to the aesthetics of a show. The color balancing in that webm alone makes it better than most pastel colored modern anime, and the highly detailed characters in the webm puts it above a lot of shows seeing as anime generally is so lacking in movement in the first place.
good to see you, fellow /tg/bro
That's the compromise you make when you pick between designs that look great and have lots of detail but take ages to draw, and lower detail streamlined designs that are easy to animate.
Personally I'll take a show with bare bones character detail with more animation than something that looks very nice but doesn't move well.
I wonder if we'll reach the year 2040 and people will be going on about THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF 2007 BACK WHEN THEY MADE REAL ANIME or if cel animation will remain the hard cut-off point for "retro" animation.
You don't like them because you think they are "moeshit" and get triggered by the floof meme and female characters in general
>le sacred cow
You aren't fooling anyone /v/
This is some next-level over-sensitivity. It really is your sacred cow if you freak out and can't handle somebody insulting even a fraction of it.
Will Ie Naki Ko ever get a non-frog BD release?
/v/tards hate anything they perceive as moeshit (anything that includes female characters). That anon in particular is extremely butthurt about people saying floof on /m/ and spergs out there repeatedly.
Re-watching Kodomo no Omocha, but planning on skipping the NY filler.
Kodocha without Hayama is an abomination
>there could be cross boarders responding to your post RIGHT NOW and you would never know
Never fear anon, it's easy to tell who are crossboarders. It's the ones who disagree with you, you can tell that they're crossboarders because they're stupid and wrong and should kill themselves.
Watch out, we've got a tough guy over here.
Shitpost elsehwere faggot. And take your sorry ass shit taste with you. I guarantee you're the same faggot in that other thread months ago trying to spout the same nonsense about 2040. Honestly, I don't even think it's possible to have taste as shitty as yours, so I'm convinced you just want to derail the thread for those "ebin" replies. Well, there, I replied faggot. Now scram.
Gasaraki is great! I really loved the way they integrated the more political-fuckery with the samurai mysticism.
that old post is me, not that other anon.I'm surprised you dug through the archives to find that and it's hilarious that you're so paranoid that you looked for a months-old post as proof of samefagging just because both of us used an extremely common idiom months apart. That was literally also the first time I'd even mentioned Bubblegum Crisis on /m/ and even more in that it was an "unpopular opinions" thread so holding a grudge or thinking I'm some serial-BGC-shitposter is just pathetic. And using "le" unironically is just outing yourself even further. You probably shouldn't accuse others of crossboarding.
I was being somewhat inflammatory when I made that post, but your weird obsession is sort of proving my point.
Anybody want to talk about old anime instead of watching the Bubblegum Crisis guy get butthurt?
I'm watching watching Dororo, I'm four episodes in. Really good so far, very well-directed. The black and white adds a lot to the atmosphere and let them get away with a lot of violence at the time.
I can't believe this started over a post I made literally months ago on a totally unrelated board.
Heck yeah I want to talk about old anime. Its comfy as fuck.
I havent seen a ton of pre-2000 anime but I'm working my way through it. I have a ton that I really want to watch but I find it takes so much longer since they are more often 50+ episodes.
Speaking of which does anyone know why that is? It feels like in todays age they churn out a ton of 12 episode shit to see what sticks. But anime back then was way more thought out and planned to be at LEAST 24 episodes. So many series I want to watch are 50+ or 100+ episodes
I can't believe you're still trying to not-so-subtly derail the thread. Fuck off anytime. I don't wageslave a long and hard day just to see your frail ass shitposting again. You're lucky mods aren't around.
That's what happens when there are people who absolutely cannot handle people not liking what they like, and have put the show on a pedestal because it's old and they can feel superior over it.
Have you watched part 1? I loved part 2 when it aired on Adult Swim back in the day, but I haven't seen it since. Working my way through part 1 and I'm finding it to be just okay. It's kind of got me worried that I won't enjoy part 2 as much and my memories will be tarnished
also where'd you end up getting part 2 from? Discotek dvd, Horrible, neo, or RiP?
Slayers TV. It never even got a good quality DVD release, so they may never find the original 16mm film reels to give us a proper remaster.
Don't reply to anybody involved in this stupid "argument". Idiots always feel the need to get the last word in and think they "win" as long as they're the last guy to say something, it'll never end as long as they keep being fed.
You can point out the irony of acknowledging it in this post but whatever.
Love it when Ikuhara goes balls to the wall crazy in a show. Pity he just can't keep it up for the full runtime of his newer shows.
Love those transformation sequences.
Will never not love this autism.
>Love it when Ikuhara goes balls to the wall crazy in a show.
Ikuhara is an absolute mad man. I remember reading an interview Anno gave saying how Ikuhara wanted him to make Rei pregnant to fuck with the waifufags in Japan.
>You can point out the irony of acknowledging it in this post but whatever.
I'm very proud of you being so detached and cool-headed, anon. Truly an example to us all. Why do you not expect anyone to give you grief over your shit taste?
I appreciate Ikuhara's works but when people paint him as this "must be on the drugs xD" lunatic, I kind of take offense. He's a bit of a sexual deviant who knows how to do shot composition damn well. Not some sewage-dwelling enigmatic Loch ness junior.
I never really understood this way of talking about a director, whether it be Ikuhara or anyone else.
>I remember reading an interview Anno gave saying how Ikuhara wanted him to make Rei pregnant to fuck with the waifufags in Japan.
This sounds amazing, just imagine how the asuka vs rei fights would have escalated.
I'm just glad that this thread can somewhat move past that autistic BGC poster, even if he's still desperately begging for replies.
These are the ISO-only torrents on AB, might be worth making a quick encode of a few of them for other people to browse, if they don't already exist elsewhere (haven't checked).
>I never really understood this way of talking about a director, whether it be Ikuhara or anyone else.
People don't seem to like to attribute anything slightly weird or particularly creative, it always comes back to "dude drugs lmao" because I guess they don't have the imagination to picture somebody coming up with it.
if none of yall have watched fist of the north star, you should
its the father of all manime
Considering how little fucks Anno gives about his fans (see bottom left), I can't believe he hasn't done this.
>I know, but doesn't it get extremely grating to you?
I think it's dumb, but I also think it's just this default way for people to say "wowee zowee he's so out there that my only point of comparison is that it's like he's on drugs". It's like this weird general descriptor more than "he is literally on drugs" more often than not, I think.
>WHAT WERE THEY ON POT?!?
Yeah, it's annoying, and I'm willing to bet you can find a million 'top ten tripping anime' lists on youtube that basically amount to Utena and Cat Soup.
Ikuhara is a silly guy who does silly things. No one is implying drugs when they appreciate his silliness.
And even fewer people are autistic enough to get upset over it.
>And even fewer people are autistic enough to get upset over it.
I wasn't aware being autistic over anime was some insult. But then again, this is /a/ in 2017. Am I too old for this place already?
anyone know shows with the two-fisted tales type of setting? basically having any of these elements:
>taking place during the pre-WWII era
>adventurer main characters
>main characters are a couple and already know that they love each other
pic related has that indiana jones spirit of traveling around the world, searching for different relics.
Some shows i know are from post-2000(ex. Chrono crusade, gosick, nijuu musume etc.)
Your trips compel me to upload some episodes. I don't know anything about encoding, though, so they'll just be whatever x264 Handbrake setting I can find a guide for. They're on AB for anyone more competent and interested.
MAKE THESE FEELINGS
to be honest, the symbolism/foreshadowing etc. becomes so much clearer on rewatch
I actually enjoyed Utena significantly more the 2nd time around.
Mainly a manga but there is a cute OVA where they do a stamp rally
There is no separation between metaphor and reality in Utena.
Most of it is very straight forward, but told in a very unconventional way. The most you should be looking for is fairy tale allegory to fully understand the last arc.
I'm just wondering if I should actually look for it, like how people presumed Eva was a super deep religious metaphor when Anno just added random Christian bullshit because it was weird and foreign. I'm not asking for a list or anything.
Watching Turn A Gundam and the original Dragonball. Turn A is getting great but felt weird to me considering my introduction to Gundam was 0079 since there was no Zeon or Federation but I do love the cozy Ghibli esque vibes the village has. EG's 1080p BD release is spectacular.
Also watching the original Dragonball, it's starting to get a little more engaging and less slow paces. Pilaf arc was shit, tournament arc got better towards the end and when Goku fought Roshi but the Muscle Tower arc was pretty fun if not a little repetitive.
And I only have enough space left for Heidi, Girl of the Alps or Ranma 1/2, which one do I get?
The first episode where he just runs in and murders everyone was so surprising. I was expecting the episodes to build up to him defeating his mothers killer but lol no. Just runs in their and fucks their shit up
