When the world you live in is ruled by evil monsters, sometimes the only way to save it is to become a monster too. Griffith loved the world enough to betray it, so he could gain the power to save it. What he did is so far above anything like wrong and right that it's not even in the same category.

Guts left Griffith because Griffith explicitly said that he would never see anyone who wasn't fighting for and pursuing their own dreams as an equal, but a tool for Griffith to use. Guts wanted Griffith to see him as an equal, and not a pawn, which is why Guts left. Griffith was a sociopath from the very beginning and only saw people as his or not his. Because he could never make Guts his, he respected and admired him, but because he could never have Guts, he got asspained when Guts left to assert the very reason Griffith respected Guts in the first place.
