I've just finished S1 and it's one of the comfiest anime I've seen in a long time. I so regret not watching it with /a/.

Also I don't get Megumin's popularity. Aqua is the superior girl here. Or does she get better in S2?

Just being funny doesn't cut it. Megumin has distinctiveness going for her. She's like a breath of fresh air when you discover her for the first time.
