Yes.

Maybe.

Just learn Japanese already.
It's not that hard.
It's only made cryptic by Kanjjis.
But it's really not.
Most of them are actually used in a single word you actually need to know.
You can actually read most Japanese with barely 400 kanjis.
>>
I've been out of anime loop for around 2 years now.
So fansubs are basically dead and everybody watches Crunchy rips? Is horriblesubs still a thing? Is even Nyaa still a thing?

Basically, you need basic japanese class to get over robot translation, but that's about it.
>>
>>156373888
>Just learn Japanese already.
>It's not that hard.
One thing that pissed me off about fansubs are people who don't know that language for shit. The very basics are not hard but learning a language to the point where you can fluently read, listen to and speak it takes a lot of time. If you don't have the ambition to study it for several hours a day for the next couple of years don't even bother.
>>
>>156374043
And your argument is? that I made Kanji plural? In english?
>>
>>156374043
My bad, I meant *Kanjitachi
>>
>>156374127
Yes, because you're the kind of retard that says "animes" and "doujins".
You don't even have a grasp of the basic rules of the language.
>>

Haha, yeah, that's still not even close to right.
>>
>>156374169

>>
>>156374373
>trigger
It's like you enjoy advertising that you are from tumblr. You talk and act like them.
It's actually text book cognitive dissonance. Rather than just admit you're wrong, you trying to delude yourself into thinking other people are mad so you can dismiss them without really thinking.
>>
>>156374427
Mocking you for being stupid and pathetically slow in the head does not amount to anyone being mad.
Again, welcome to cognitive dissonance.
>>
>>156374469
Oh the irony of you mentioning cognitive dissonance. :^)
>>
>>156374533
>it's irony because i say so!
Nope. Also, why are you just so ignorant and stupid? You do realize putting ":^)" in your post means you are admitting to "trolling", right? And trolling is being intentionally wrong for the sake of starting a fight. So you literally just admitted you're wrong.

Good job.
>>
>>156374434
Man don't get me wrong.
There was a time when I just watched fansubs and got bored of this shit.
Then I decided to Japanese up.
It took me fucking years because I was retarded in my approach to the language.
Now I don't claim to be able to translate fucking everything Anime throws at me, but I'm pretty confident wen I spot a mistake in Robot translation.
Remember, we've all been newbs at this shit.
>>

>>
>>156379242
Rarely. I live in Japan and it's fucking impossible to find English subs or fansubs for anything here. Trying to introduce someone to foreign shows is near impossible. Every subtitle file site has every language except Japanese on nearly everything.

There's practically one company here that has the monopoly on all subs/dubs for all foreign movies/TV. The govt is pretty good at cracking down on other people trying to start up their own and on fansubs. As a result foreign shows dubbed into English are about as bad as it is for us when we get dubbed anime: the same shit 3 emotionless voice actors doing the same emotionless voices for every hollywood character ever.

All-kana sucks. It's for kids whose brains are mush. Adults can't read stuff like that without having to slow down, as if reading to a child.

You only think it's easy and doable because you read slow, like a child.

Try reading this and tell me how long it takes. I could read it all in about ten seconds if it actually contained kanji.
>>
>>156380379
>You only think it's easy
It is objectively easier if they have a problem identifying kanji, with the tradeoff being it takes longer to read.
>>
>>156379217
TL Note: "CR rippers" in the context of that post doesn't refer to direct rips like HS but groups that use simulcast subs/video as a base and improve on that (this kind of thing was still a relatively new thing in the scene back then).

So even back in 2010 I didn't find Crunchy to be good as-is.

However, back then I still did have some optimism about them catching up to fansubs some day (after all, they hadn't even been fully legit for two years at that point), though as years went by it become more and more obvious that it would probably never happen.
>>
>>156380379
Kana text is slower for sure, but not by much. You only think it is because you're not used to it.

>why do people hate grain?

Some people just like vaseline smeared into their eyes, I guess.

Though for a more nuanced answer, I would say you should evaluate grain on a case by case basis. Like for some flat colored older shows that were done on cels, they're going to have grain, but for those it's just an artifact of time and may only serve to make things look pointlessly noisy, and so some degraining wouldn't hurt (though you should still be careful with it in order not to nuke details or make things look awful).

With digital shows on the other hand grain is pretty much always intentional (though you shouldn't confuse particularly noise dithering for grain) and thus you should generally respect that.

>>
>>156381118
Most trusted groups on NT tend to put out solid releases on average.

The biggest issue really is that basically everyone has given up on timely releases at this point. I'd gladly wait up to 24-48 hours after simulcast for a solid fansub release, but when you have week-late releases that keep getting even slower over the season and shows left plain unfinished, it just burns.

This season was basically when even my patience finally hit its limit and I just started grabbing direct simulcast rips for a lot of stuff, and I can't say I would be particularly satisfied with doing it (and they really do need to be rips because CR's web player for example is a fucking joke and post-process debanding is a must for watching simulcast video in my books).

>is FLAC that big of a bloat?

With 100+ episodes you can definitely save a good chunk of space by using lossy audio over FLAC, though video will generally always take the most space.

High quality video compression takes a long time, however. If you're encoding things by yourself for yourself, you can try experimenting with something like Handbrake. That's not really something you would do fansub releases with, though.

>>156381427
No need to pretend when I most definitely do still watch anime, and I'm actually watching more shows this season weekly than I've been in a good while (just going with simulcast for a lot of them has certainly helped with that, even if it annoys me to have to compromise on my standards to make it happen).

>Asenshi seems to be doing a good job with LWA.

Yeah, some timely releases still exist, but sadly they seem to be more the exception than the rule.

In a way, what I said in that 2010 is exactly what ended up happening, with most groups using simulcasts as a base and improving on them. I'd say we hit the peak on that some years back when there were lots of groups still active doing releases for a lot of shows and also prioritizing speed to an extent that things usually came out within 12-48 hours of their respective simulcasts (if not even faster). But at some point groups just started getting slower and slower and by this point and now everyone seems to be more content with doing things at a snail's pace.

>>156381817
I'm not aware of any tools to do it myself (since I'm the kind of person who would script it on my own) but they might exist, but ultimately they're just going to be automation for the exact task you described (demux, re-encode, remux).

>>156381870
Obviously? My Japanese is nowhere near good enough to watch things without subs.

>>156381892
I would say my top picks for the season right now are Kado, Sakura Quest and SukaSuka (in no particular order). I still have a couple shows I need to check out properly though (most notably Re-Creators, Tsuki ga Kirei and Uchouten Kazoku S2). Beyond that I'm also enjoying Renai Boukun (its style works for me) and Bastard Magic Instructor (mostly for being notably better than the average magic school show so far to the point where I actually look forward to it every week). Everything else ranges from passable to okay so far.

don't

>You watch a lot of harem shit.

As a matter of fact, I do, and I'm quite comfortable with my taste in that regard (watching silly harem antics is one of the ways I like to unwind with anime). Though from what I'm currently watching I wouldn't even say much beyond Saekano and maybe Tsugumomo would count as a straightforward harem. With Bastard Magic Instructor they haven't really had anything approaching romantic stuff for the teacher himself and I'd prefer them to keep it that way (unless it's with the professor lady), with Eromanga-sensei we all know he's going to be lusting after his sister in the end, and Renai Boukun is very much a comedy show that just takes place in a harem setting.

But do elaborate on what you would consider to be "better taste".

Anything that's not harem shit and love triangles.

Re:Creators is pretty fun though.

Those are just the FOTMAOTS, huge difference

without the original Japanese this is impossible to compare.

Of all the anime this season, they're probably the ones that will be remembered the most.
>>
>>156383297
Well, my top three picks of the season qualify for that, so where exactly is the issue again?

>>156383383
I do enjoy Saekano but after learning what else the original author has done I can't help but feel that his talent is rather wasted on what is ultimately a pretty standard harem show. Though I still wouldn't consider it a top pick for exactly that reason.

And Eromanga-sensei could never be a top pick considering how terribly dull Sagiri has been so far. I sincerely hope she gets some actual character before his brother starts lusting after her for good. But even besides her, the show is really just decent at best.

This season is when the series finally gets serious about drama.

If all I wanted was some cute girl designs then I could literally just browse Twitter for a couple minutes to satisfy that. But If I'm watching a show then I expect to get something more than just that, and so far Sagiri hasn't exactly been doing much beyond being a boring shut-in.

>>156383702
I have somewhat mixed feelings about that, honestly. I know the writer can certainly do drama, but at the same time the overall tone of the show has been so overall light up to this point that it could clash pretty badly with that. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it goes.

Who fucking summoned him? Why is he allowed to take breaks from shilling for Jacob and sucking meme cartel dick?

It's not got the same feeling. When I picture a lunchbox, I picture what I had in elementary school. When I picture bento, I see a real japanese bento.
Similarly, for all inents and purposes, itadakimasu could be translated as "thanks for the food", and there'd be no situation in which it's really incorrect, but it's just not got that genuine feeling.

I miss karaoke subs for OP/ED songs...
>>
>>156381566

That depends mostly on the publisher deciding if they want to dig it out of the shallow grave the author put it in. I think he was the one who wanted to kill Saeko and keep taking it down a darker path (shit Hirano already had to shoot his armed and dangerous policewaifu), while the artist is happy just to keep drawing the torpedo tits that the fans ask for. IF they don't care about pissing on the wishes of the original writer (japanese publishers rarely do) then they could bring it back more fanservicey and less tense. Run it beside some other zombie mango, like Infection or something. IMOUTO IS THE STRONGEST.

>>156379906
Difficulty isn't decided by the amount of kanji, retard. Knowing 400 kanji your vocab would be abysmal and kana wouldn't help you either.

Daiz! Daiz! I have a question!
Is my TV supposed to be on warm, or cool, or game or standard?
Sometimes I think cool looks correct, but other time I think warm looks correct.

Only when extremely necessary, like when ESL-kun saved us from the shitty Gabriel Dropout memesubs.
>>
>>156373378
ID-0 is being fansubbed right this season you know.
>>
>>156373378
>Will fan subbing ever come back?
They could always come back subbing old shows since there are still a ton of old obscure shows have haven't been subbed. Insted of 8 groups doing 1 super popular show and causing drama over it. Really, its the fans that killed fan subbing.
>>
>>156385611
But his subs were garbage. Literally all he did was copy CR and remove blatant liberal translations.

>>156385690
Yeah but no one will even watch those except you.
And maybe not even you.

>>156385748
>only doing it because it draws a crowd
>not doing it for the love and passion
>not wanting to share untranslated shows you love with other people by translating them yourself
And this right here is why fan subbing was so shit. I've seen really old and obscure fan tranaslated games with more passion than anime fan subs and those take much more work.

>>156385746
Therefore automatically making them better.

>Don't pretend to know what you're talking about
But I do know what I'm talking about. You finding some shitty kana VN doesn't change the fact that most entry level meme VNs have a kanji count at slightly below 2k. Talking about 400 kanji makes you sound like a machine translation baby.
>retard
You don't know Japanese.
>There are literally all kana VNs
Congratulations, an extra selection of even more (shitty) VNs you are unable to read.

You must consider these hard by your one and only criteria, kanji (you fucking idiot). Why would you tell people to learn Japanese, but make them so handicapped they can't even read this shit?
>>
>>156386514
Man that list is depressing, I have 3k mature vocab on anki and that's probably not even scratching the amount of vocab used with 2k kanji. I guess I'll be stuck with moege for a while.
