I don't want to hate on xyz and synchro summons because I get that the game had to refresh its mechanics for continual players. I play a GX/early 5Ds effect monster deck and I obviously get my shit pushed in when I come up against a more up to date synchro/xyz/pendulum deck online. My impression is that old effect monsters have more limitations about how their effects transpire and the potential to backfire on the player. On the other hand these newer effect monsters are really strong and always stack positively, neither player has to think about unintended consequences.

Keeping it short, new rules for link format mean you can only have 1 monster summoned from the extra deck on the field in the new Extra Monster Zone. Link monsters have link markers pointing to the old monster zone now called the Main Monster Zone. These link markers let you SS monsters from the extra deck to those monster zones.
So basically if you want to play extra deck spam, you play a link deck or you shove in link monsters into xyz/synchro spam decks. Pendulum is ruined by new rules.

In MTG, it's because things like naga and snakes actually are different. For example, naga are like half-snake half-human (taken from the Hindu mythology, I would imagine) and snakes are either literal snakes or those things from that Japanese-themed plane we don't talk about.
