I don't agree with the theory that the MC was just a normalfag who was putting up an act all along. It's true that, to some extent, he was semi-consciously trying to depict himself as an outcast through poetry, but it's very clear he genuinely felt detached from everyone and everything else in his town. So even though he wasn't as crazy and extreme as Nakamura, his feelings perfectly resonated with hers and he went to lengths he otherwise wouldn't have.

Nakamura is a damaged person, and that's why she can't fit in. When she see the MC's abnormal behavior, she thinks he is like her. But he is not. Talking to Beaudelaire doesn't make you damaged, just an idiotic delusional teen.
Nakamura would set herself on fire because she's in despair and wants attention from the society she despises. Kasuga is not hurting like she is, he would do it because of her.
