Japanese traditional houses have wood floors and tatami mats. dirt and shoes can damage them. tatami mats aren't cheap or easy to clean either. so you leave your shoes at the door.

in the west. you see more stone, tile, and carpets. Which are easy to clean and more tolerant of shoe wear.

I usually don't ask people to take their shoes off because the majority of people I know have seriously putrid smelling foot odor.

Not sure if it's just a British thing, but it's fucking disgusting when all you can smell is a mix of different peoples feet when they take their shoes off.

Shoes stay on, please.
