Book adaptions are some of the best. Uchouten Kazoku, Welcome to the NHK, Tatami Galaxy, Shinsekai Yori, World Masterpiece Theater anime, LoGH, 12 Kingdoms, Shiki are all high quality while almost every LN adaption is straight garbage.

Though it does help that book adaptions tend to be a complete story rather than LN adaptions which are basically just ads for the LN.

A bad series can be justified if it has a good OP and ED. A truly great series has incredible OP and EDs while also being good on it's own right. People tend to belittle how important OPs and EDs are in anime. Not all, but some anyway.

God, Shirobako was infuriating because of this. It's not even just design (which was bad enough) it's characterization too. All the men were interesting, flawed, they could be selfish, mean, lazy, cause conflict and it was all the more satisfying when they grew from it. The girls were all perfectly nice, with perfect work ethic, and any conflict they were involved in was watered down so that none of them seemed anything but cute and sweet. Most of them were a waste of space who added nothing to the show except being cute.
