It's just about impossible to theorize shit at this point other then guessing and tiny things being left for us to pick at. Most of them are incredibly obvious too, like this inevitable confrontation with Mutsuki and Touka. Ishida hinted at it kind of subtly, then he threw it out the door a few chapters ago by having a near frame-by-frame copy of Touka and Mutsuki having the same expression facing in opposite directions. But it seems utterly pointless now since the confrontation is happening much sooner then I would have guessed, unless Ishida does what he's done with every major confrontation in the last arc and ends it on 'To be continued'.

A lot of the ground work for :re was laid in the original TG, and there was a lot of things left to pick at during certain periods of :re that made the story ripe for theorizing on. (Like the example you listed, Etos infatuation with Kaneki having its groundwork laid around the middle of the original manga)

And yes, I am of the opinion the direction the story took during Cochlea has been very, very disappointing. It's exactly what I expected but the delivery has been just bad at certain points.

I just want to know why Ishida put in all that effort into creating that connection between Kaneki and Eto. Throughout the story, Ishida has been building up this fatefull encounter between these to characters leading up to the Tsukiyama arc where they finally met at Kaneki and Eto. That fatefull encounter being forshadowed by the red string of fate, Ishida has been showing in multipile illustations.

I would have liked for Ishida to put some of the effort he put into Kaneki and Eto into developing his relationship with Touka, but sadly he didn't. So what he did with Kaneki and Eto feels like useless effort.

This felt like I was reading the original TG for a moment. And not just because it was Kaneki and Touka.

But because it was character centric set on building up character relations.

Not introducing a million new characters and their individual stories.

Not recreating a personality or reshaping a character's "world" because they are now exposed to something weren't.

Not over-reaching on the amount of characters interacting in one chapter.

It was simple. It further fleshed out character relationships. It built off established information and provided subtle new points as well. And it concentrated THE story going forward, with a spicy twist at the end as a wrinkle in plans.

It felt like original TG and it was great. I want more chapters like this. I want the next chapter not to be exclusively what will happen between Kaneki and Mutsuki, but it will remain heavily on those two. I want their interaction to be based off what we know about the characters, not some random injection of the new.
