These are the most likely reasons. It's why Homestuck, which started out okay (as a unique form of media comic) and turned into shit because of the fanbase (Hussie having fans work on it kinda made it all fucking retarded by the end and the fanbase itsself was autistic).

The only reason classic anime like Evangelion and others don't get the treatment is that they pre-date this kind of toxic fandom.

because people are edgy and want to be the special snowflake, take for example Naruto (currently just talking about the original, still busy with it). it sure is pretty flawed i quite some aspects, but it has a great story working up to something good, there are characters who you actually care about and see grow, even though they don't have much screentime. but people like to smear it of as trash because they do not want to give it a try.
