The problem with "generals" is that they attract so much newfaggotry and cancer who don't know how to interact with people on 4chan.

Take a look at the Yuri on Ice threads. They attracted a lot of new people who were quick to dismiss any criticism of Yuri on Ice as "baiting" or being homophobic (even when no one is saying anything homophobic) and whenever this criticism showed up you'd have people panicking and saying to ignore the trolls. These generals are echo chambers and if you don't fit into the hivemind then you just get shitposted to death. I joined the Yuri on Ice discord and there were plenty of people there talking about how "they never used 4chan before" and only went there for Yuri on Ice, that they weren't even anime fans (the only anime anyone wanted to talk about other than YoI was fucking Shingeki no Bahamut), and there were even underage people there.

Generals are a recipe for disaster.

Back in 2009, there was a tripfag on /vp/ named bui. Bui had the sometimes annoying yet potent ability to dodge bans consistently and autopost the same image with different sizes well over 100 times a minute with some program or another. I don't know how they did this but they were singlehandedly capable of destroying any thread they saw fit with impunity.

I know it's in poor taste and to fight shitposting with shitposting is wrong, but short of the entirety of /a/ figuring out how to create several high quality threads consistently enough to bump the generals off there is no hope for us. The current moderation is unwilling to do anything to alleviate the situation we're facing, and the sad reality of the fact is there are enough people on /a/ that contribute to the problem that without direct action it's unlikely our situation will improve.

So if we really want something realistic done certain actions that we generally frown upon might need to be considered.

This is a merely a symptom of a greater affliction; the atmosphere of this board has become far too welcoming to crossboarders and off-site elements.

I see far too many people posting in rulebreaking threads without even saging, much less reporting them.

I see far too many people obliging rec threads and saucefags. Giving these people what they want only rewards their laziness and leads them to believe that no matter how shit their behavior is, the board will adapt to their whims (when in actuality, it should be the other way around). They then take this unwarranted self-importance into other threads and shit up the board even further. It's like spoiling an already-spoiled child.

I see far too much usage of frogshit and words like "cuck", "normie", "ree", BLACKED and other crossboarder memes that belong far away from here. Blogshit is rampant. Tumblr, reddit and MALfags have gotten far more comfortable here than they should be.

These phenomena seem tangential to the topic of generals, but as I said, they are merely a symptom of a greater disease. Retards do stupid shit like this because other people encourage (much less call them out) their behavior, thus implicitly giving them the impression that their behavior is "okay". When these retards are made to feel comfortable here, others look at those retards and think "hey, he's doing it, so it's okay for me to do it too!" In turn, those retards engage in similar behavior, dragging the quality of the board down further. It's a vicious cycle. The lack of self-moderation and real moderation have created an atmosphere where unsavory elements (such as generals) are allowed to thrive.

The moderation could be much better without turning this place into nofunallowed. If anything, from what I see on the bans page, /a/'s punishments are far too lenient in comparison to other boards. And I seem to recall kinomod mentioning making generals less "problematic" but at this point that just seems like lip service.

Crossboarding is only really an issue on /a/, since due to the changing demographics of this site, /a/ is the only major board on this site that has a radically different posting environment than rest of the major boards.

Since most people on 4chan today have no interest whatsoever in "weeb" hobbies and only use this site because they like memes, perceived anonymity and perceived lack of moderation, /a/ is a relatively isolated board that still retains the "core values" of the site.

So while crossboarding between the other major boards on this site is usually barely noticeable since their board cultures are mostly the same, that's not the case on /a/.

/a/ is the only (major) board where the userbase is at least nominally against shitposting.
/a/ is the only board on this entire site where spoonfeeding is seen as a bad thing.

There are numerous other subtle and not so subtle differences between /a/ and rest of the major boards on this site.

The real problem with crossboarding insofar as /a/ is concerned users who primarily browse other boards, and by virtue of this accommodate culture of other boards, would bring these ideals and social norms to /a/. This is what's killing /a/. Not so much that folks who hail primarily from other boards come here, but that they do not respect the ideals and behaviors that separate /a/ from the rest of 4chan and by virtue of that make /a/ better in one regard or another than the rest of 4chan.
