Discovered it and BoBoBo through Victory Versus, BoBoBo was pretty good, hoping for a 2 for 2.
Don't take my word for it but I've heard countless times that it takes quite a bit to get going, and to be consistently "funny". YMMV depending on how taken by it's humor you get.

It's pretty good the biggest problem is the first 20ish episodes are mostly all character setups and world building. It's definitely the slowest part of the season, you CAN skip it but you miss out a lot of the subtle things later in the series. Another big issue is that people try and marathon it at the git go, which is kinda a put off given how long the series is.

I found it enjoyable from the start, I wasn't looking at it as a pure comedy though. If you look at it for straight comedy, the first 20 episodes will be a huge put off

I see. Should I hop to E20 then?
Also, secondary question. When I get to the dubbed part, should I check it out? I liked BoBoBo's dub and it's sub, especially comparing the jokes. Is it the same for Gintama?

>I see. Should I hop to E20 then?
I wouldn't recommend it as you WILL miss out on some of the references or importance of the characters if you want to go for the long haul
>the dubb
It doesn't work because a lot of the jokes are not really going to makes sense and don't translate well, even the VA lineup is bad.
Funfact: every major character in gintama is reference to a famous person in japanese history

I see. Maybe I'll just check out an abridgement of the plots of those episodes and then watch from there. It seems like a good middle ground.
Shame about the dub. They tend to make me more attached to characters through the VAs.
this kicks the shit out of bobobobobobobobo. bobobo is more juvenile humor and fairly typical japanese comedy.
gintama still has the boke/tsukkomi thing, but it also has genuine amazing humor.

Watch it the way you'd watch futurama when it used to run on CC
>>156166457
I'd say watch them, but that is me. There is plenty of humor in the first 20 episodes (episode one is a throw away by all means), it just feels a lot different than the rest of the series. IIRC I read even the staff admitted they screwed up a bit with the first run

I've got some ideas. Thanks for your help.

Good to hear!

Just watching whatever episode comes on?
I watched 51 episodes before dropping it, people kept on leading me on saying it'd get better but it never did. If you don't like it early on you'll likely not like the later parts.

Episode 83 is a good place to start if you want to get a feel of how the staff gets comfortable with gintama compared to the first 20 episodes.

I don't know what these guys are talking about, the catgirl lady's got a great personality. Nice gams, too. 83's pretty good so far. The masochist ninja is also boner fuel.

I've seem more people dislike Gintama because they go into it thinking it is a pure comedy, when it is actually a lot more than that. It has a lot of comedic value in it, but also gets very serious at times and has a LOT of references to japanese culture/history/comedy

I hear ya. This is good.
