This. I feel like the main allure of SnK was the humans vs. Titans and the hopeless, bleak atmosphere it conveys. I honestly believe instead of doing the whole Marley/Eldian thing he did, Isayama should have just made it a post-apocalyptic world and the Titans are just the result of a messed up science experiment long ago. Then he can just explain Reiner and co. as coming from a human settlement outside the walls that retained the old technology instead of regressing like the people in the walls and learned to live alongside Titans. I think it genuinely would have made it better than the Marley reveal.

Not to mention this would add a layer of moral greyness to the story. Right now the wallists are pretty much the good guys while Marley is cartoonishly evil. But going with the settlement idea makes it more grey morally because the settlement only wants to rebuild civilization to be like our current one while the methods they use are brutal and the wall people are only acting in self-defense from the settlement folks because they don't remember the old world.
