I keep hearing that Shinkai confirmed that Mitsuha was trying to write the same message to Taki at the end of the movie
, has anyone heard this rumor and have a source? Pls I want to believe.

>>156135623
Didn't see anything wrong with the thread. Maybe there was a bit too much talk about Mitsuha's VA's singing career?
>>
>>156135953
>spoiler

What message are you talking about?
>>
>>156136036
daisuki, my man
>>
>>156136036
When they were on the mountain and told each other to write their names down and Taki wrote "I love you" instead.
>>
Hey, where does "Goshintai" play in the movie? Only song I can't place.
>>
>>156135953
I think that was just a rumor by anons, and we kinda disproved it here since it didn't look like it was what she was writing, and she was surprised by seeing the message on her hand.
>>
>>156135953
While I can't show you proof without until BDs come out when Mitsuha was writing her name she did one stroke, the left to right stroke could of been for す. If she were doing her name the first stroke for み would of looked different. Therefore it's easy to understand why Mitsuha would of written すきだ just as Taki did.

>>
>>156136169
Ah, but she could've been writing her name in kanji, 三葉
>>
>>156136169
Didn't her name start with the kanji for three? That's what I figured she was writing.
>>
>>156136216
Yes, but she wrote it in hiragana earlier in the film, probably because of the stupid number of strokes needed for the second character.
>>
>>156136224
>>156136216
I'm gonna speak out my ass here but wouldn't you write your name in kana in a scenario like this? The 2nd character in her name is 12 strokes, compared to the total strokes of her name in kana which is 6. Also the other anon who mentioned she wrote her name in kana earlier in the film.
>>
>>156136248
>>156136289
she didn't leave enough room for 3 characters though...
>>
>>156136289
>but wouldn't you write your name in kana in a scenario like this?
Yeah probably, I think she new they didn't have much time left. But there's also the chance that she wanted to be sure he got the right name.
>>
>>156136127
After the Zenzenzense montage, when Mitsuha(Taki), Yotsuha, and the Granny went on a hike to the body of the God (Goshintai) to place the Kuchikamizake.

That's one of my favorite piece in the soundtrack actually.
>>
>>156136309
Another reason I thought of having her write her name in hiragana is the fact that you could read her kanji name in many different ways. 三 could be read as "san" or "mitsu" from the entry level shit I know about kanji. A 5 second on Jisho showed that 葉 could be read as "ha"
or "you" In the scenario if trying to have him remember a name hiragana would take out any possibility that it could be misread.
>>
>>156136368
Ah right, thanks.
>>
>>156136344
>>156136415
While the hiragana is faster, the kanji is her actual name, so he may have an easier time finding her with the kanji.

Besides that and Dream Lantern/Katawaredoki, any other repeating themes in the soundtrack?
>>
We can agree that Tessie was the best side character, right? Probably followed by Okudera.
>>
>>156136565

She didn't write it like that before, though. Most Japanese people don't strictly follow those rules (you saw how sloppy Taki's 前 was in "Omae wa dare da" when he wrote that in Mitsuha's notebook). Mitsuha's no exception - when she wrote the name on his hand in hiragana before, she just did a curve downwards.

>>
>>156148371
It was really good. Super emotional in ways I wasn't expecting. The entire thing got super intense beginning when Taki couldn't see the star overhead after the date.
It felt like there was an intense bit like halfway through where it seems like things are coming to a resolution and Mitsuha's friends are gonna help, it reminded me of like episode 8 or 9 of Steins;Gate where Suzuha goes back in time and then leaves the "I failed" note, where everything is falling apart at once.
They both waited for each other for so long /a/ ;_;

Subs is probably the best one, because Mitsuha's original voice is just perfect. Same with Taki's.

The music is great too, and it's a very enjoyable listen while slightly tugging at the heartstrings.

But I tried listening to the English version of Nandemonaiya, and I fucking lost it.

I'm not sure why but this made the tears fall down non stop. I guess it's different actually listening it in your own language than just reading the subtitles of the song.

I think I will. Gonna tamper my expectations a bit though, the way people were jizzing themselves over this made it sound like this was Miyazaki but better in every way. As a native bugerlander myself, our taste is indeed rancid dogshit and the halfway decent movies get a very limited release.

Fucking Boss Baby is a hit here. It not doing well shouldn't shock anyone or hurt the movie in anyway.

It is better than Spirited Away. Innocence, maturity, more subtlely the need for sense of identity and belonging, these universal themes are so well explored by so many works, but even though Spirited Away is one of the best of those works, I feel I already understand those themes well by now. And its critique on environmental destruction really shows its age. Is there anyone but Trump who does not know about it by now?

Your Name's themes are so timely, the growing urban-rural divide, the tug-o-war between the duty to family expectations and the right to pursue individual ambition, and the awful destructive power of the tohoku earthquake.

Miyazaki is so, so imaginative, he makes me feel like a child again, but that is just fantasy. But Shinkai shows us the beauty, the pain, in the normal, everyday reality that I thought was so mundane. To me, that was more inspiring.

I don't feel like going full on debate with you right now mostly because I don't care

But lots of movies have themes, and do them well. I wasn't saying Your Name didn't, because it certainly did, it did them very well in fact and better than most, but doesn't have the same gravity as something like from Ghibli.

For me, it's probably Tessie's "That's going to fall? Really? ...Then I guess we've got no choice. We're both now officially criminals!" I have no idea why, but there's something about how the VA said those lines that stuck in my mind.

Not really a spoken line but pic related was the most poignant thing I've ever seen. Everything leading up to that point only built it up even more.

The desperation of trying to evacuate everyone. Memories of Taki starting to slip away. That painful tumble down the hill. The heartbreaking pause as she just lays down on the ground, music stopped, and everything seems to have hit rock bottom.

"Let's write down our names so we don't forget each other when we wake up"

"I love you"

I've never had a scene, or anything even, giving me such an emotional impact before.

Maybe he did write is name, but the supernatural forces at work erasing Taki's memory had also altered the text. In the end his name was lost, but not his feelings.

>>156176368
Because their "most precious thing" that they left back in the underworld was each other's name. They were basically destined to forget. This has been me for the past week since I watched the movie. I've watched it in theaters almost every day since, in fact. I listen to the soundtrack when I'm driving anywhere because I can't and don't want to listen to anything else, and listening to it when I'm on the computer, while browsing /a/ for KnNW threads, and looking at KnNW fanarts.

I'm sure this is some kind of escapism. But I don't care. I love this movie so much.

Zenzenzense montage.

The entire Kataware-doki scene, especially when they finally meet.

What you said about spotting each other on the train with the ED song kicking in.

Moderately sure the Town Hall is somewhere near the High School.

Considering he was there at the time anyway, it seems likely he was still there in the original timeline.

The only thing I'm not clear on is the high school's actual position. When Taki visits its ruins for the first time, it seems like it's on a cliff above the explosion crater. Everywhere else, it seems like it's on the other side of the lake.
>>
>>156180392
It's on the cliff above the lake, the explosion crater is on the other side of the lake.
>>
>>156180392

That shot from the high school has the lake in the foreground, with the crater behind it. The crater is larger than the lake.
>>
>>156180449
...wouldn't the lake drain, then?

I guess it has been three years, but still. Can they both fill up to water table-level that quickly?
>>
>>156180553

Assuming the elevation of the lake surface is at the level of the water table for the surrounding area which is likely since the lake itself is an old impact crater, it would make sense that the groundwater would flow into both the lake and the crater up to the level of the water table. Being below the level of the water table is basically like being underground and under the surface of an ocean simultaneously.

I've been wondering about the scene where Mitsuha gives Taki her braided cord on the train, since it's shown to take place at Yotsuya Station.

Earlier scenes seem to imply that Taki lives somewhere within walking distance of Yotsuya Station (there's a shot of Mitsuha!Taki by the station entrance during the Zenzenzense montage, and it's where Taki meets Okudera for their date.) However, when Mitsuha meets Taki on the train, he doesn't move to exit, which is when Mitsuha throws her cord at him.

Does that mean that Taki moved apartments sometime in the three years when he first met Mitsuha and when the body-switching started? I suppose he might've been on his way to cram school, but I can't think of why else he'd stay on the train through that station.
>>
>>156182346

It's kinda the hardest part of the movie to swallow. Taki should have chased after her.

He also changed phone numbers so maybe he movef

his school is like half an hours walk from yotsuya station

he could be meeting someone somewhere

it could be a train line thing, like it might make more sense to get off and walk when arriving at yotsuya on the chuo but stay for another stop when on the subway

i mean, i don't know, i've lived in tokyo and there were a bunch of times when i stayed on the train past the station closest to where i lived just to go to a specific place for shopping, fun, sightseeing, meeting people or whatever

One, the study cards he was looking at.

Wrong. If he hadn't had cram school he wouldn't have been on the train and she wouldn't have met him, so he wouldn't have gotten the rope and wouldn't have been the one she was body swapping with, which means the village may not have been saved.

Cram school was the correct decision. Thank you cram school.

>>
>>156184449
Different timestream nigga.

Her meeting him and giving him the cord is what "connected" their two different timestreams and let his dream connect to her body. Think of it as a starting with nothing but a straight line (mitsuha dreams) and then when she goes to see him that line loops around and connects to itself (taki dreams).

The details are just god magic shenanigans.

Moon?

The ones I got:
Mitsuha going to where Taki' s date started ended to crash the date
Ramen guy and his truck can be seen at the very beginning
Adult Taki looks at his hand where Mitsuha tried to write her name
Mitsuha loves a pink hedgehog
The trio of bullies of Mitsuha can been seen at the end living their lives

Probably some more but that's all I got for now

Nice catch
>>
>>156192439
Flower shop guy isn't Tsukasa, but instead guy from Itomori who was staring at Mitsuha (Taki)'s breasts while she was playing basketball.

Also, Taki was drawing the exact same picture of Itomori that he drew later when he was in Mitsuha's body and kicked over the desk.

And the ramen place he, Tsukasa, and Okudera eat at is called "Takayama Ramen." During the blackout scene, Mitsuha's dad gets a report from "Takayama Sensor Station."

There was a very detailed explanation in a previous thread that was inexplicably deleted. But basically, each character has a certain motif.

Mitsuha: Hedgehogs.
Her notebook has a hedgehog sticker on it.
Hedgehog keychain on her bag.
Sewed a picture of a hedgehog on Okudera's skirt.

The hedgehog can mean a couple of things: Its resemblance of Taki, because every hedgehog has brown spikes that look like his hair, or the Hedgehog's Dilemma. The closer your are, the more hurt you become, but the farther apart you are, you're also hurt the same because of your feeling of longing.

Taki's is Half Moon.
His T-shirt that he wore during the trip to Hida that can be seen when he took off his jacket to eat ramen has a picture of a half moon on it, the words HALF MOON on the bottom.
His jacket also has that same logo on the left shoulder.
His phone's logo on the back is also that of a half moon.
Throughout the movie there doesn't seem to ever be a full moon, as it's always either half, bisected by a telephone pole, or a waning moon.
After the Kataware-doki scene, when Taki screamed out Mitsuha's name over and over again, it looks like he's screaming it at the moon, which was technically waning.

So its possible meaning is that he's incomplete, and Mitsuha is his other half that he keeps trying to search for. "Mitsu" can also be read as "light".

Takayama is a city in Gifu Prefecture, south of Hida. Itomori is located somewhere within the boundaries of what is actually Takayama (Taki!Mitsuha's journal entries are geo-tagged with Takayama.)

>>156191042

In the scene where Mitsuha's dad and Taki's dad are having dinner together, a calendar for September 2013 can be seen. It's in the shot when Tessie's dad comes to ask for more sake and tell Tessie he'll be learning how to use explosives, although it's hidden behind Tessie's dad for most of the shot.

Combined with the poster marked "2016" when Mitsuha!Taki first goes to his high school, it's the earliest tip-off that they're in different years.

See you soon.

Man I fucked up hard.
I had no idea it was going to come to my country later on, so I went and watched it like a month ago from Popcorn Time. It was still 1080p and I had good headphones, but holy fuck it was so much better on the big screen. I really should have skipped watching it and instead figured out if it would come to my country.

Saw it a couple hours ago in the premier here, was well worth it even if I've seen it before. Its made me really depressed not only because of something so enjoyable ending, but also because it hits really close to home thematically as well. I guess I need to watch the directors entire library, haven't seen 5cm per second. I barely watch anime at all but when it comes to movies I tend to enjoy them a lot.

>when some anons drove three hours+ just to see the movie
>some poor, but dedicated, sap drove 9 hours
>Mitsuha went all the way to Tokyo and wandered around the huge city just to find Taki
>Taki climbed a mountain, twice, just for a chance to see her

Step it up senpai. Go download the soundtrack and listen to it on your way there and back. It's definitely worth a second, or even a third watch. It gets better, in fact, since you start noticing all the things they gave away in the beginning, how everything connects and just how well made the movie is.

Also brace yourself since a lot of the scenes have a bigger impact the second time you see it. This seems to not be a unique thing since a lot of anons also feels this way.

For some reason your spoiler didn't register in my head, so forget about what I said about watching it multiple times, since, well, you have.

But seriously. It's only 30 minutes away. Can you really not regret not watching it as much as you can in theaters, an experience that will never again happen, and the BDs won't come out until six months from now?

Am I the only one that didn't automatically think that Tessie liked Mitsuha when I first watched it? (Still don't think it's nec. the case, but I can believe it.)

For me, the main scene used to interpret that he liked her, the one where he gets embarrassed when (Taki)Mitsuha gets close to him when they're in the clubroom is pretty natural regardless of whether he likes her or not.
>>
>>156200230

I dunno, does it make more sense that they have no memories after they meet again, or would meeting one another trigger their old memories? I've seen fan artists working with both.

Then again we had to wait 4 years for 5cm/s to get an epilogue. So it might be a while.

this is the jews in hollywood fault, they dont want competition for their movies so they probably charged funimation a fuckton of money if they wanted to show trailers on their channels, fucking jews i swear, hitler didn't do enough
>>
>>156200230
That scene is where I also realized that he like her, it wasn't as apparent before.

I'm more surprise about how easily Tessie agreed to blow up the plant. I know you have issues taking over the family business, but to blow up your dad's plant because the girl you like says a meteor is going to hit your town is overboard for me.

>>
>>156200230
This weird tension is there, along with the unnatural focus on tessie and none of sayaka.
He's rather bashful the first time they meet. He gets defensive when sayaka asked if anyone would enjoy her kuchikamisake. Is the one to call her when she misses school. And then of course, readily agreeing to her terrorist plot

So either it's a one sided crush or camaraderie from being in similar positions.

In a different movie, Mitsuha would be Tessie's bride, and Sayaka his mistress.
