Personally, I didn't like the first two either.

Episodes 1 and 2 were definitely the worst, but it never gets much better. I powered through it for the memes, but I wouldn't recommend it. Its popularity baffles me, unless it's just because artists like drawing the animal girls.

I feel somewhat bad for the people who have yet to watch Kemono Friends, and are probably now being turned off of it by its popularity. Even if they they tried to watch it, it'll possibly be through the lens of "all right, impress me!", or they may already have their minds made up about it and are just looking for reasons to think "this isn't that good."

It may just end up being one of those cases when after years of avoiding it because of prejudices, they finally watch it years later and see that it's actually a good show like what happened with K-ON.

I've actually read tons of literature on how to craft a good story. There's extensive research and information on how to write a good opening. Even though the beginning scenes are only a fraction of your story, everyone says they're the most important and most difficult.

The opening scene needs to introduce new plot points, characters, set a tone, etc..., all of which can repeat later in a story.
So if you don't know how to write a good opening, it tells me you probably don't know how to write a good story either.

Yeah a few times the world felt a lot like Sora no Woto's to me.

Remnants of what looks to be quite a far away yet high-tech past still existing and working among those who have little to no idea what they are or how they work. Also how there is 'history' right in front of the friends, but they have little or no grasp on actually being able to look into it.

Yeah it has that "child playing among the ruins" thing going for it. I agree with your comparisons but also YKK and in some ways Non Non Biyori (the rural diaspora scenery of the dilapidated schoolhouse and the dying village).

It's really a winning combo, take a bleak setting and fill it with characters who are cheerful and/or oblivious to their surroundings. Gives this very innocent optimistic feeling.

As far as we know, Kaban and co. aren't so much exploring the outside world as they're preparing to explore the neighboring island, which according to Boss still seems to fall under Japari Park's jurisdiction.
Of course, that doesn't preclude them from EVENTUALLY heading to the outside world, especially given the fact that they all have a boat now.

Regardless of where they go however, I find it hard to believe that the world isn't generally in some state of ruin. How could a place as unique as Japari park fall into such a state of abandonment otherwise.

That's possible. But given the fact that the KF world setting has been described as one where humanity's been wiped out "before", I don't know if the cerulean was entirely the reason behind why the island is void of humans.
